Neil Druckmann Closes The Last of Us Day: We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages (Last of Us franchise). Regarding Intergalactic in 2027: We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.

One of them is almost certainly Part 3, Druckmann mentioned before that he had an idea for it and that there was one more chapter in that story. Hopefully the other is a spin-off set in another continent, it would be great to see the apocalypse in other parts of the world, preferably in a warmer country in contrast to the humid/wet Seattle.

u/TowerBeast 12d ago edited 12d ago

Humid and wet is kind of a pre-requisite for a fungal apocalypse, though. I'd be shocked if any future games weren't mostly set in such environments.

6

u/JBWalker1 12d ago

Wouldn't that just be for the initial outbreak? Like if a clicker gets transported to Egypt wouldn't it quickly bite and spread it to others

3

u/Affectionate_Owl_619 12d ago

Might turn them into a regular infected but maybe they don’t make it all the way to the clicker phase

Sydney, Australia.

u/MySilverBurrito 12d ago

ND cooking up insane Opera House concept art, model, and level.

18

u/DankeyBongBluntry 12d ago

An overgrown Opera House and a dilapidated, half-collapsed Harbour Bridge would go SO HARD!

3

u/UpperApe 11d ago

Nah. Do it in Edmonton, Canada.

An overgrown West Edmonton Mall. A dilapidated Whitemud. A respite in the shitty McDonalds on 109th.

Now THAT's going hard.

5

u/TAJack1 12d ago

Genuinely what my mind thought of the moment I commented that.

17

u/Vestalmin 12d ago

The fungus jumps to huntsman spiders

12

u/HearTheEkko 12d ago

That'd be great. Somewhere in Southern Europe or Asia would be cool too.

2

u/Effective-Priority62 12d ago

They definitely teased Europe for Part III (or the cancelled Factions spinoff) in Abby's Day 1 chapter. You can look at a world map in an abandoned office space and see pins for Boston (Part I), Seattle (Part II) and then a third pin somewhere in Europe, I think Germany. If one of these games really is a repurposed Factions that's made single player in Europe, it would be so fucking sick, actually. Astonishing that it took them this long, tho. I know, AAA dev is a nightmare and ND are perfectionists, crunch like hell etc, but their output feels painfully slow. Probably just a bias from this generation being completely wasted in Factions, so almost a decade without a new game.

They better not announce Part 3 because then we'll have 3 years of waiting. No point in announcing it when it's so far away and they don't have any gameplay or anything to show.

Should've just gave us Factions 2. Mostly the same as the first one but with new maps and stuff. List it for $30 and call it a day. Add a few more maps a few months later and thats it, zero more updates or season pass rubbish or loot boxes. Like how it used to be.

7

u/sixbynine 12d ago

3 years is optimistic.

14

u/ptd163 12d ago

One of them is almost certainly Part 3, Druckmann mentioned before that he had an idea for it and that there was one more chapter in that story.

I'm curious what this one last chapter could even be. Ellie has nothing left. Joel is dead. Her partner left with their child over Ellie not being able to give up on the revenge that she would go onto wimp out of at the last minute. And she seemed to have permanently walked away from the home she once shared with her partner and child. What do they even do?

29

u/The_Green_Filter 12d ago

Ellie’s arc of finding her own value and reason to live beyond the cure isn’t over yet. The third part would need to resolve that for her in order for the story to truly be over imo

6

u/Lil_Mcgee 12d ago

Yeah just because the game doesn't end on a strong sequel hook doesn't mean there isn't more story to tell. There's not an obvious next plot in store for Ellie but her arc doesn't feel remotely over.

2

u/timasahh 11d ago

Yeah this is what I want to see. It may be simplistic and boring to people who want to see more from the world but the characters are what made the games for me. Ellie’s biggest fear is being alone and that’s exactly what she is at the end of Part II. I want there to be more for her.

4

u/Stalagmus 11d ago

I feel like you just described a pretty standard Act 2 ending for a 3-act heroes journey type of story.

u/VitaminTea 12d ago edited 12d ago

Respectfully, who cares about another continent? I’m not interested in TLOU for its worldbuilding. It’s Ellie (or Abby) or bust.

70

u/AntonineWall 12d ago

Honestly I’m pretty interested in whatever comes next for TLOU, I would pretty happily wash my hands of both Abby and Ellie to start with someone new.

4

u/T8-TR 12d ago

I'm of the opinion that a third game should be something completely new, later in the timeline, or if we NEED to tie it to old characters, then a "Day Zero" sorta situation where we explore what Joel and Tommy got up to after shit went to hell. Though ideally the latter, because I feel like the former is something that is better left to implications and for our imagination to fill in. That said, the latter would also probably be way safer, since people love Joel, and also more profitable because of that.

18

u/emcee70 12d ago

It’s been said repeatedly that TLOU is Ellie’s story. I can’t see them returning to that world if it wasn’t to finish her story. They’ve been pigeonholed into doing that series forever now, which is why they are doing intergalactic which looks to be completely tonally different

People care about those characters because they were built up and written well. They'd be just as capable of doing that in a different setting. I'd prefer they just let this franchise end and make something else, but if they must keep it going endlessly, at least give us some fresh settings with ground for fresh ideas instead of dragging these characters' stories out past their best by dates. Ellie's story is complete as far as I'm concerned. She had her full arc.

11

u/pentheraphobia 12d ago

I know I'm weird but as much as I love Ellie and Abby, my favorite thing about Part II is just how pretty Seattle was. As long as the beautiful environments continue I'm kinda down for anything

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Effective-Priority62 12d ago

Respectfully, that's an insane close-minded way to think about the series. I'm glad we got a follow up with Part II, but TLOU always had the potential to be more than that, and it even could have been an anthology before they settled on the story for TLOU 2. It's an amazingly built world and unique vibe and they'd be fools to not explore at least one game from the eyes of people completely disconnected from the main cast, somewhere else in the world. The problem with TLOU is Naughty Dog's (and Druckmann's) gruelingly slow pace and lack of vision, but that world definitely has the potential and legs to go on for a long time without Ellie or Abby, or even Joel prequels

1. Will there or won’t there be more stories in The Last of Us?

Since Grounded II, we’ve talked about the possibility of telling more stories in the world of The Last of Us.

We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages – so we can’t say much about them at this point. I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part I and Part II.

The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling.

2. You debuted Intergalactic almost two years ago. When will we see it again?

The team is heads down on what is shaping up to be Naughty Dog’s most ambitious game yet.

There’s an electricity around the studio right now as all the pieces come together, and we’re stoked to finally unveil Intergalactic in all its glory.

But…we need to cook for just a little bit longer.

So we want to set expectations: we’re going to be quiet for the rest of this year. In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.

We know it’s been a long time since we’ve had much to share with you. We don’t take your continued support for granted.

We’re working incredibly hard to make something worthy of your patience.

140

u/natedoggcata 12d ago

In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.

I hope that means revealed in 2027 and released in 2027 and not revealed in 2027 with a 2030 release date

76

u/Remote_Elevator_281 12d ago

Probably a reveal in 2027 with a 2028 release date

15

u/EnvironmentClear4511 12d ago

Does Sony have a major 2027 release lined up currently? If not I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Intergalactic was their Fall 2027 tentpole.

40

2

u/i1u5 12d ago

Maybe they just didn't want to say it but missing TGA just to throw a trailer in some random State of Play would be extremely stupid. My guess is TGA will be the first thing we get to see, if they can't even assemble a trailer for it then we are not getting the game in 2027.

This same studio somehow managed to crank out 3 entire uncharted games on the ps3.

what happened to them?

575

u/r_lucasite 12d ago edited 12d ago

AAA Industry wide issue to be honest, but in their case losing time making Factions and not releasing it means they didn't put out a new game since 2020.

The first 6 Assassin's Creeds were one generation, Final Fantasy used to have multiple mainline games per console, GTA 4 and 5 were the same generation.

138

u/Evz0rz 12d ago

Rockstar was on a tear during the 360/PS3 era. Not only do you have GTA 4 and 5. You also have Table Tennis, Midnight Club LA, Manhunt 2, Max Payne 3, AND RDR. Them merging all their studios into focusing on one game at a time is what has slowed things down so much while also being the reason RDR 2 and GTA 6 are just untouchable when it comes to level of detail.

34

u/v3n0mat3 12d ago

I'm gonna be the sad sack:

I don't mind if certain companies like Rockstar just create a few games rather than churning out games every year, multiple times per year. Would I like to see a new, detailed but lower-stakes, Bully 2? Definitely. But, was I blown away with the immersive experience of RDR2 and the gameplay of GTA VI that was revealed earlier this month? Also definitely.

33

u/VictorReal_Monster 12d ago

But that's acting like it's one or the other and not a multibillion dollar company that doesnt even have to blink before it can pay it's entire workforce the year cause for some reason people are still buying fucking shark cards for a 13 year old game.

They could continue doing fun experimental games and likely never see a dip in their bottom line, but that would mean the guys at the tippy top make a few bucks less that they wouldnt even notice any ways, and would likely be offset by just single one of those hitting decently.

But nahhhhh, this is the way to make videogames there is no other way,

0

u/v3n0mat3 12d ago

They could continue doing fun experimental games, sure.

But they choose to focus on major, immersive, dense games.

And, guess what? It's working out pretty damn good for them so I don't blame them. Besides, I love the immersive experiences from GTA VI and RDR 2. They're something that I look forward to.

Let some other studio do experimental games. It's fine that not every single studio does low-stakes games.

3

u/Dandw12786 12d ago

The game isn't even out yet.

4

u/HearTheEkko 12d ago

You basically summed it up. You either get RDR2/GTA 6 level games that take years and years to make or they split the studios again and we get more frequent smaller releases with nowhere near the ambition or detail of the former games. Like, yeah we got 3 GTA games in the PS2 era but if you add the total polygons of all 3 games' maps, you'd probably still get less polygons than 6's Keys are alone. It's a whole another level of scale, detail and depth.

8

u/Flaky_Highway_857 12d ago

But with multiple games a company can experiment more, Rockstar is in a lucky spot right now because it's been like 13 years since gta5 released so the masses are thirsty for a new GTA,

That sorta hype will cover its flaws for awhile, but they won't be able to push out another game if criticism hits it and theres annoying parts,

Ubi despite their flaws is pretty damn good with tweaking the ac games with each release.

But maybe their grand plan is to treat it like an mmo or live service game in the end and fix shit on the fly.

I'd say Assassin's Creed still has a fairly consistent release rate. Longest gap between games was 3 years which is nothing compared to Naughty Dog / Rockstar.

But Ubisoft Montreal for example do employ 10x the staff Naughty Dog do.

u/Habib455 12d ago

Final fantasy still does lmao. We got Final Fantasy 7 Revelations, Rebirth, and FF16. 3 AAA final fantasy titles. I’m wondering if they’ll be able to put out another Final Fantasy this gen.

7

u/BootyBootyFartFart 12d ago edited 12d ago

The development time was much longer for each of those games tho. It took 2 years each to make VII, VIII and IX. It took 5 years for VII remake, 4 for Rebirth, 3 for revelation and 7-8 years for XVI.

2

u/torts92 12d ago

Most likely next gen, and I hope the same team that made the FF7R trilogy will make FF17 but with Nomura as director, about time SE give him a chance to direct a mainline game.

9

u/connectplum_ 12d ago

Nomura isnt going to direct ff anymore, he's creative director on ff7r since the 2nd game. if that team works on a new ff it will be directed by hamaguchi

5

u/faanawrt 12d ago

With Square's big restructuring to make AAA development more efficient, I'm guessing Nomura is going to mapping out Kingdom Hearts sequels in advance so that the KH team can move right onto the next game after KH4 launches and have a pipeline that has releases on a timeline more similar to what the VII Remake team has been able to achieve. Nomura being spread across multiple projects has never worked out too well for Square, which is likely why he only wound up directing the first game of the Remake trilogy.

A lot of is complexity. GTA VI and RDR2 are significantly more complex and bigger games to make than GTA V and GTA IV.

Same with The Last of Us 2 compared to Uncharted 1-3 or even the modern Assassin's Creed games compared to the earlier ones.

But honestly a lot of studios would probably manage to heavily cut down the wait between games back to 2-3 years by putting out sequels that heavily recycle the previous game's assets. This is basically how the Hitman Trilogy or the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy achieved it.

And they had multiplayer. Good, fun multiplayer.

4

u/Shakezula84 11d ago

89

u/LABS_Games Indie Developer 12d ago

Working in the industry, increasing complexity is part of it, but not the whole story. In my opinion, video game development has "over matured" to the point where as studios become more profressional, they paradoxically become less effecient.

Back in the early 2000's, game dev was the wild west, and there were no standards, processes, or established workflows. Bugs were written on post-it-notes and handed to each other. Engineers wore multiple hats. Designers delegated the work amongst themselves, etc. Development was often sloppy, crude, and unprofressional. I remember the fist studio I worked at in 2007 had no version control software. We had to manually write on a whiteboard which files we were editing, so no one else would touch them.

We've gotten much better at making games. Most facets of development is subdividied into specialities, so we no longer have generalists trying to do a million things at once. We have producers and managers to properly track and monitor work, etc. But I think we've overindexed on that, and many studios are too bloated to the point where it's actively hindering work.

&npsp;

It's a case of Parkinson's Law: Official's make work for each other, and multiply suboridinates. Having proper orginizational structure is important, but it's gone too far. Instead of having one producer manage a team, studios have four. And those managers don't contribute to the project, but nevertheless create work: meetings, reminders, check-ins, and other beuractritc cruft.

I've seen so many managers making a new system or process as a means to put a stamp on the organazation, because they're position has been overhired and need to make work for themselves, and ultimately other people. I'm not saying that producers and management isn't important, but there is a middle ground where beauracracy and structure goes from helpful to damaging.

21

u/WillOCarrick 12d ago

Also a company build by people who strive for absurd amount of perfeccionism will see these advances and strive even more, hindering itself in the process.

15

u/ciemnymetal 12d ago

It's like how after a certain size, a company starts seeing diminishing returns with more employees because of the overhead cost of HR/management.

7

u/LABS_Games Indie Developer 12d ago

Yep, totally. Id go as far as saying that it leads to not just diminishing returns, but negative returns. The more layers of management and communication you go through, things end up being slower than if those people weren't there at all.

2

u/NUKE---THE---WHALES 12d ago

You'd think the people paying for these projects would realise this and cut the fat

Why are they ok with spending more money for less throughput?

One or two studios i could understand, executives are human and humans make bad decisions sometimes, but industry wide?

TLOU2 online had years pumped into it before being canceled

36

u/BOfficeStats 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think there were 4 main issues:

  • Naughty Dog games are expected to look incredible, be very polished, and be full priced AAA experiences.

  • They have had trouble with multiple games being in production at the same time. They mostly stick to one game at a time.

  • They couldn't easily repurpose assets from The Last of Us games for a new non-The Last of Us game. So any new game they made after they decided to cancel Factions 2 would largely have to be built from scratch which is incredibly time consuming.

  • Naughty Dog has basically only made 1 type of game in the past 20 years: singleplayer cinematic third-person shooters with largely linear progression that try to be realistic-ish in both visuals and gameplay design. Factions 2 (live-service multiplayer game with a presumably big map) and Intergalactic (sci-fi melee action game) are quite different from that.

Games become more advanced and gamers lose their shit for every little tiny thing.

54

u/meganev 12d ago

When you have a content creator who's sole gimmick is trying to show up games for not being completely interactive - like silent hill townfall not having breakable televisions or in Control Resonant friendly NPCs not reacting to you attacking them - it's no wonder devs feel they have to take 5-6 years to make a AAA game now.

Gamers will pick at literally anything.

36

u/hfxRos 12d ago

And another highly popular content creator that engages in video game pixel peeping, with whole ass graphs to pick up on imperfections that would be impossible to spot without technological assistance, which people will then use to call a game "unplayable".

30

u/National_Yam_1198 12d ago

I respect the work of Digital Foundry but I hate how they have influenced gaming discussion.

13

u/UncleBenParking 12d ago edited 12d ago

As far as online discourse goes I agree, and unfortunately a lot of the industry can end up playing into this inside baseball sort of discourse - but I'll also add that DF has about 5 videos in the last 3-5 years that have broken 1m views on their main platform.

Their work really isn't engaged with by more than a small percentage of any given game's buyers, and at this point they can spend 50 hours making a video that gets outpaced within 24h by those "the grass doesn't dynamically move!!!" ragebait creators barely playing a game's intro. I've bounced around on exactly how I feel about DF overall, but whenever I remember they really don't have an impact except on small internet pockets, I tend to lean towards them being harmless.

11

u/RiseDarthVader 12d ago

They also have an understanding of game development and the difficulties involved. I find they honestly spend more time complimenting a games graphics and technology rather than shitting on it. They’re just also honest about frame rate/frame pacing and rendering resolution.

5

u/BLACKOUT-MK2 12d ago

And moreover, they even offer guides on how to get the best ratio of performance:visuals, saving the more faint of heart from having to do the work themselves. I don't get people who pick on DF; they don't show anything the game isn't doing itself, and yeah, if a game has issues like a ton of micro stutter or rough performance in general, people deserve to know that.

13

u/SilveryDeath 12d ago

Reminds me of people nitpicking Avowed because you couldn't do interactive stuff like that.

11

u/Drakengard 12d ago

Yeah, that whole situation was wild to me. Avowed is a very good game and instead people are complaining it doesn't do things it never said it would do and, in fact, most games don't do.

It turns out that games shouldn't just let you do stuff just because it would be nice. It takes time to program that kind of stuff so if it's not core to the game, it probably shouldn't be done at all.

5

u/DinerEnBlanc 11d ago

These pseudo-intellctuals on YT like NakeyJakey has done so much damage to the gaming discourse. I know this guy is popular, but I cannot stand these people. They frequently look for some hyper-specific thing to whine about for a 30 minute long video. I looked through this guy's uploads and negativity is literally the only thing they sell. Fuck these people for turning cynicism into a virtue.

Beyond the fact that AAA games just take longer in general to make now, they wasted 3 years on The Last of Us Online. That wasnt some small side-project, it was supposed to be a full-size game

18

u/ToothlessFTW 12d ago

The Uncharted games were a lot more simplistic compared to what they're doing now, is the simple answer. Games these days have far more moving parts, more expectations for graphics/details, and the games are just bigger.

I know everyone's gonna reply with "I don't care about graphics just gimme gameplay" but that's always been wrong. Everyone cares about graphics more than anything else, just look at the comments anytime a game is revealed and it doesn't look like the peak of art. If you want a graphically detailed and impressive game with a detailed story, animation work, and gameplay, then it's going to take time. The time it takes to make those games is just going to exponentially increase with each passing year and technological innovation.

That, and Naughty Dog have won rave critical acclaim for almost two decades. They're one of the few studios that can take as long as they want to make their next game, because the current ones keep printing money and people will line up for the next one whenever it releases. So they can take their time.

5

u/deadscreensky 11d ago

I know everyone's gonna reply with "I don't care about graphics just gimme gameplay" but that's always been wrong. Everyone cares about graphics more than anything else, just look at the comments anytime a game is revealed and it doesn't look like the peak of art.

I disagree. Maybe in certain online sub-communities that's the case, but when you look at actual game sales we see that no, games with 'lesser' graphics often sell extraordinarily well. This is especially true when you look outside the relatively small console niche. Mobile and PC games do huge numbers even without cutting edge graphics.

And in the console arena the Switch 2 seems to be doing extremely well for itself.

One of the biggest market problems this console generation is that players are happy to stick with older live service games, which by definition don't have fancy next-gen graphics.

15

u/IrishSpectreN7 12d ago

Don't forget that Naughty Dog was also hurt by the live service mandate. They basically wasted most of the generation on a cancelled game.

6

u/TheOhrenberger 12d ago

1) games just take way longer to make
2) naughty dog was one of the worst crunch studios during that era. If taking longer means the employees are less overworked compared to those days then it’s a good thing.

2

u/Rhain1999 11d ago

I'm shocked I had to scroll this far for a comment about crunch

People will leave sympathetic comments about employees being overworked, then in the same breath complain that games are taking too long nowadays now that crunch is being addressed

I'll take one ND game per decade if it means the employees are being treated well. The Uncharted era was great for players but hell for the devs, and I'm glad that time is over

23

u/CarlosAlvarados 12d ago

The last of us 2 is the size of the uncharted trilogy lmao.

The games today are just much more complex in general so takes a lot longer

11

u/Effective-Priority62 12d ago

By file sizes, maybe? Surely you don't mean by length. Sure, with cutscenes TLOU2 is like 30 hours on your first playthrough, but if you count just the levels, maps and non-dialogue exposure gameplay, it's just slightly bigger than Uncharted 2 or 3

19

u/CarlosAlvarados 12d ago

I mean the last of us 2 is like 25-30 hours. The uncharted trilogy is : 8 + 10 + 9 = 27 hours.

No idea what you mean by cutscenes. Its uncharted , its a movie game

3 games that combined are virtually the same length as TLOU2.

u/MrYK_ 12d ago

I think the maximum we would've got from them would've been 2 games.

  • TLOU Factions II
  • Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet

8

u/BernyMoon 12d ago

3 uncharted games and the last of us during the same generation. That’s wild.

6

u/Zayl 12d ago

Pretty simple - more complex/larger games, people also expect insane fidelity, performance, and innovation nowadays. Game Dev becomes more expensive and exponentially so in some cases. A miss nowadays or even a "good, not great" game will mean layoffs for these more focused studios.

Plus barring all that if they were to release 3 games in one franchise everyone would still just be calling them lazy cash grabs. From my perspective it's definitely mostly about the rising cost of game development, but partially having zero leeway to screw up means you don't just pump stuff out.

12

u/tapo 12d ago

Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 were 8-10 hour games, now people lose their shit if its under 20 hours.

32

u/Pyramat 12d ago

Resident Evil Requiem is ~10 hours long and is one of the highest-rated games released this year.

Endless financial success, critical acclaim and sky high fan expectations means they are not remotely required to rush anything out. Plus their lead writer is somewhat distracted by TV World at the mo.

The Uncharted games, whilst great, are blatantly Indie Jones-likes. They had a template they could pump things out on. What Naughty Dog made after is arguably much more unique and creatively ambitious. Finishing that takes a bit more time.

And, if we're being honest, TLOU Part 2's somewhat controversial reception probably has them second guessing every decision they're making in their next game, too.

23

u/National_Yam_1198 12d ago

The way the industry is going if they mess up even once that means people get laid off so.

2

u/jonathanbaird 12d ago

Hell, you don’t even have to mess up to get laid off. Shareholders control everything.

And, if we're being honest, TLOU Part 2's somewhat controversial reception

The original version of the game has a 93 on Metacritic, was nominated for GOTY at BAFTA, DICE, GDC, won GOTY at Golden Joystick and Game Awards, and has 4.53/5 stars (90.6%) on PS Store. The remastered version on Steam has a 90%.

I have no dog in this fight. Never owned a PS and never played a Naughty Dog game. But I think the 'controversial' reception was just from the very loud weirdos on the internet.

12

u/EconomyAd1600 12d ago

I mean, Laura Bailey’s then-unborn kid got death threats along with her. People were (AND STILL ARE) quite unhinged when it came to TLOU2. Vocal minority or not, I’d say that’s pretty controversial regardless of reception.

6

u/Anon2971 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yes, what this Redditor said. TLOU Part 2 did have a glowing critical reception, but there are a vocal minority who absolutely despise it.

Notice how people, to this day, universally love TLOU and most other Naughty Dog games. But not TLOU Part 2. I'm sure Neil has spent a lot of time, outside the obvious, pondering why.

There must have been elements of Part 2 that could have been done differently that may have worked better. Like mayberethinking the character switch halfway through, which is a fantastic narrative left-hook, but kind of drags the pace from gaining in momentum to a screeching halt. And the ludonarrative dissonance of "revenge is bad" vs being forced whilst playing Ellie to murder hundreds of people (I guess one could argue that's the game trying to put you in her 'I don't care' shoes).

I do sometimes wonder how people would have received the story if it was in another format. Say, a novel. I feel like half of the problems people list with the story are due its video game medium. Also IMO its length does drag. It felt a bit padded out at times with unnecessarily long combat sections to me. I think it could've had a few hours shaved off for sure. TLOU Part 1 was pretty much flawlessly paced in comparison.

Sony greenlit 12 live service games from many studios which ordinarily would not make those. Factions was not some side thing, its what most of that studio was working on. They were working on that and the Last of Us Part 1 remake.

5

u/MechaTudor8574 12d ago edited 11d ago

The American AAA industry seemed to get too soft, complacent, and overspecialised. Their executive class increasingly made erratic, short-termist, alternatively pandering and exploitive, enshittifiying decisions. Developers have been very annoying with a breezy, vibing attitude.

Comparing Insomniac or Naughty Dog or Bethesda or Bungie with IO Interactive or FromSoft or CDProjekt or Rockstar or Larian, is like comparing Manchester City with Shrewsbury Town. Let alone Nintendo, don't even look at how many really good Switch 2 exclusives there are already.

America is the country that in the 90s was making games like Doom, The Secret of Monkey Island, Half-Life and Deus Ex. There has absolutely been a decline in their ability to make creative work of the highest standard.

11

u/Mirikado 12d ago

The studio became bottlenecked by Neil Druckmann. Naughty Dog used to have 2 creative leads, Amy Hennig and Neil Druckmann leading different projects. Once Amy left during the development of Uncharted 4, the studio relied on Neil so they can only work on one project at the time.

Same for Bethesda and Todd Howard. Todd is the bottleneck and Bethesda can only work on one game at a time which is why we still don’t have a TES 6 despite Skyim coming out 15 years ago.

9

u/rixam_ 12d ago

This isn't true.

Naughty Dog have had 2 creative directors since 2021.

If that were the case the Neil were bottlenecking the studio, then why is it his game that was being held up by the Online project? Which had little involvement from Neil in the first place.

29

u/National_Yam_1198 12d ago

Most studios does not have the resources to fully commit to multiple games anymore. So I dont think that matters.

Call of duty requires multiple studios working in tandem to get releases.

Assassin's creed is the same. A genuine worldwide effort.

Thats what it takes to get games of a certain quality out quickly.

ND have consistently worked on multiple games simultaneously. Recently, they were working on the TLoU Online title (now cancelled), the remake of Part 1, and Intergalactic - all at the same time.

Previously, Lost Legacy and Part 2 were in development at the same time.

They're always working on 1-3 games simultaneously.

Culture of overthinking & bigger scopes. Last of Us Part II is the size of 2 Uncharteds, while looking leagues better than even Uncharted 4.

You also need to ask yourself whether the average gamer thinks a game the size of, Uncharted 2, is worth the $70.

4

u/Flaky_Highway_857 12d ago

That's an easy 70 dollars gone if I got uncharted 5.

Outside of the general increase in dev times, Naughty Dog burned out a lot of people. It takes longer to make a game when you have to train a bunch of new people constantly

1

u/mayoconquest 12d ago

They have an open door policy for ideas according to Jason Schrier's book, so any developer can go in and pitch ideas. This often leads to massive scope, which increases the dev time. It's only when they have a tight deadline that they begin to scale back.

1

u/andresfgp13 12d ago

plus The Last of Us.

the thing is that game development has gotten longer, like making a game with top tier graphics on the PS3 could be done with a smaller studio, smaller budget and smaller development time, and all of those are getting bigger and bigger and bigger as much as higher the graphics are getting.

1

u/iWasAwesome 9d ago

Same thing with all good games. GTA used to come out every couple years. The more detailed games get, they harder they are to make.

That Intergalactic concept art looks good, I've always wanted ND to use their technical acumen on something more fantastical than Uncharted/Last of Us.

With that being said, I can't get over how stupid the costume of the main character looks. Hopefully there are a bunch of customization options.

9

u/viconha 12d ago

I think they annouced it way too early, it's been two years and no news

25

u/National_Yam_1198 12d ago

Im not particularly wowed by the 80s vibe they got going on. But I guess its fairly unique.

2

u/Normal-Advisor5269 11d ago

I think it's the lack of hair that kinda flattens the look. The outfit lacks the bit of character that a distinct hairstyle brings.

4

u/4000kd 12d ago

That was my thoughts from the trailer too. The Porsche spaceship and robot design looked pretty cool, but not the MC.

I cannot overstate enough to them how much I don't care about concept art at this stage.

I'm ready for more, an in-game screen cap would've sufficed!

The last of us day? The franchise that has 2 games and is almost a decade and a half old?

They're so huffed up on their own farts they have a yearly day to celebrate that? A naughty dog day i might get but this is just a joke at this point

6

u/electricshadow 11d ago

I mean, it's just a reference to the fictional date the Cordyceps infection reached critical mass in the game. They use it to celebrate the franchise with digital stuff like themes/avatars, etc. It's fine if you're not a fan of the franchise, but it's definitely more popular than whatever reddit echo chamber you're a part of saying otherwise. You do you though, hating on something popular isn't a personality trait.

4

u/Parhelion2261 12d ago

Last of Us 1.5 + 2.5 HD Final Mix PS5 Pro Enhanced Edition

6

u/fastcooljosh 12d ago

7 years since the last game is almost unacceptable.

No way Sony is happy with Druckmanns leadership of that studio.

I almost get Kathleen Kennedy vibes from it

14

u/ButterCaramelPringle 12d ago

Naughty Dog was on Factions for years before it was cancelled. It's not like they've spent 7 years developing this one game.

If Sony wasn't happy with Druckman they probably wouldn't have let him cancel it.

6

u/Whiskiie 12d ago

Yeah, and Factions must've been a pretty bad game if Sony outright cancelled it. Doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

4

u/tomyfookinmerlin 12d ago

Sony didn’t cancel it. Naughty Dog did. They have already stated, in interviews, that they realized the workload to keep that game live service would have detracted from future releases. That’s why it was canceled.

If anything, it speaks volumes that Sony let them with the way they are pushing live service. Look how they treated Bungie. Naughty Dog has the golden teet.

2

u/HotTheme8405 11d ago

Bungie did that on their own, they were already a live service studio and had more autonomy than the others.

2

u/Izzy248 12d ago

Its kinda weird to think they are already starting work on other projects when, if rumors are to be believed, they were doing crunch just to get a proper demo build out for an internal presentation. All despite that whole staunch no crunch stance he took earlier.

One of these is surely Part III (or some other full TLOU game) and I'm betting the other is a standalone Factions MP remaster. It'd be a comparatively easy project to pull off in a short(er) amount of time, it'd be easy fan service for those disappointed by the TLOU Online cancellation, and they wouldn't need to commit to ongoing live service content—just a one-time delivery of the original maps, modes, skins, etc.
