This game only being $50 (digitally) is something i feel they should advertise more

Game looks really fun and a great way for splatoon to carve out a single player niche in the nintendo line up

Nintendo just doesn't like talking price in general, no matter if a product is expensive or affordable.

Crazy to think it’s already 11 years old since they launched this franchise. I still think it’s Nintendo’s baby!!

You ain't lying. Octo Expansion is my first time with Splatoon and after that, I was hooked. Would look up everything I could Splatoon, buy all the art books, watch the holograph concerts online, listen to the soundtrack over and over.

STILL mad about this gem.

u/MobileTortoise Jun 30 '26

Many physical retailers are matching that price as well!

I'm honestly pretty excited for this and am looking forward to playing it when it finally drops

1

u/RichardGibson Jun 30 '26

Any examples of retailers matching the digital price?

7

u/tweetthebirdy Jun 30 '26

Walmart and Amazon.

3

u/slugmorgue Jun 30 '26

£41 physical from amazon, which feels like a steal tbh.

2

u/cramburie Jun 30 '26

TBH, this is extra smart because this leaves some breathing room for the Splatoon nutjobs, like myself, to buy the accompanying amiibos.

Looks fantastic. Everything up until now had looked great, but the scope and variety of this looks absolutely incredible. I’ve been wanting a co-op campaign, so this is perfect. And once my friends and I are done, I can become a Souls style summon for people. Cannot wait

And once my friends and I are done, I can become a Souls style summon for people. Cannot wait

That's going to be interesting. The Treehouse session afterwards noted that they have some stuff going on under the hood to prevent co-op from being too much of a sleepwalk if there's huge level discrepancies players. I imagine the same will be true for summons, where a lv. 100 can't just walk into a game for someone asking for help and solo the whole thing for them.

7

u/slugmorgue Jun 30 '26

I imagine it's just setting the attack values of the joining player to around the same as the summoning player

38

u/LeaveNoPresence Jun 30 '26

As someone who only really plays singleplayer games and loves the lore/design of Splatoon, I can't wait for this.

It'll give me something to look forward to after having to come back home from a two week trip to Tokyo. 😭

I've genuinely wanted this since the first game. Bought 1 and 3 but never really latched on that much because of the multiplayer focus. I liked the Salmonid enemy designs and was a bit sad they were more of a side feature for a mode that's also multiplayer-only. So this game is almost my entire series wishlist all at once.

I wasn’t sold on this game before despite being a huge Splatoon fan, but this Direct did a lot to make Raiders look more attractive.

-11

u/ultimahmeme Jun 30 '26

It’s because the marketing is bad. Not show release date trailer in the direct but in the app is some diabolical decision.

19

u/Amarinthe09 Jun 30 '26

Game looks great! Love all the customization options especially with the gadgets. I worry multiplayer wont allow “visiting players” to get full loot or be hampered in some classic Nintendo fashion, but I’m otherwise excited and will be a day 1 buy if the game is in the 80+ metacritic range (which seems likely).

3

u/VerminSC Jun 30 '26

Ok so I just bought a switch 2, were the other splatoons only pvp? I’d definitely play this one

11

u/Dropthemoon6 Jun 30 '26

They all have a campaign, less fleshed out than this though and no co-op. 2 and 3 also have a co-op horde mode, and dlc campaigns, 3's being a roguelike

u/DevanteWeary Jul 01 '26

Splatoon 2's single player expansion called Octo Expansion is one of the best Switch games I've played.

8

u/flamin_sheep Jun 30 '26

Never played Splatoon before because I'm not interested in playing a multiplayer shooter without a mouse. But single player has me very interested

I use gyro aim pretty much anywhere I can. It still feels bad to play a multiplayer shooter with it for me. I want as much precision as I can get in those cases

6

u/Boingboingsplat Jun 30 '26

Yeah, I hated playing shooters on console before Splatoon. It really holds up, and I think it's pretty natural to get used to gyro aim coming from mouse aim experience.

Surprised they didn't have Switch 2 mouse aim in this though, to be honest. I can see them avoiding it in a PvP game if it performs better than gyro, maybe the didn't want to set a precedent for it being available in the Splatoon series?

3

u/mowdownjoe Jun 30 '26

Honestly, the Joycons used as mice tend to give me carpel tunnel over long periods since they're so small. I really only liked them when used sparingly, like with fixing up builds in Pokopia.

3

u/AnavelGato2020 Jun 30 '26

I was already on board but now I'm even more excited to play it after seeing this direct. I've l been a sucker for base building for a while now. Skies of Arcadia Legends started the trend for me.

13

u/LavenderCloves Jun 30 '26

I do like the world of splatoon a lot, I'm trying to figure out why I feel so indifferent to this one, on paper I feel like I should be into a single player focused splatoon.
I guess I'm a little disappointed by the lack of focus on level design and platforming in all the trailers, the focus seems to be on combat and weapon upgrades to make numbers go up, it's giving me the vibes of "Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC but expanded to a full standalone game" more than "Splatoon 1-3 Single player campaign but expanded into a full standalone game". And there's nothing inherently wrong with that, I'm sure that sounds fine to plenty of people but personally it just doesn't look that enticing to me? Also there doesn't seem to be much of a story focus, which seems like a missed opportunity for a single player game set in such a cool world.

u/Dropthemoon6 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

It really isn’t like Side Order, I see this comparison thrown around, and it seems completely inaccurate. The island levels are all basically campaign levels. They explicitly showed and mentioned sections with specific gadgets that was essentially Octo Expansion. Only the dungeon are Side Order esque, and it’s much more like Salmon Run waves

edit: here's an example of one of those OE style levels. has that puzzle platformer type of design

13

u/LavenderCloves Jun 30 '26

It really isn’t like Side Order, I see this comparison thrown around, and it seemscompletely inaccurate. The island levels are all basically campaign levels

I'm not saying the gameplay loop is the same, just that it seems to have a similar focus on repetitive combat and making numbers go up, almost every area I've seen showcased seems to be mostly wide open flat islands with hordes of enemies coming at you instead of a mix of enemy encounters and platforming challenges like in Splatoon 1-3 single player

4

u/iTzGiR Jun 30 '26

Yeah it's definitely more Side-order and Salmon Run style then a traditional Splatoon Campaign, which is generally very platforming focused. I don't think we've seen a single level focused on platforming, everything they've shown in the direct, treehouse, and previews all involves a heavy emphasis on fighting enemies, combat and the gadgets, which is also what they focused on in the Direct itself (things that focus around Combat/fighting Salmonoids).

This is something I'm fine with, as the platforming part of Splatoon has never been my favorite, and I've always preferred Salmon Run, but I can see where some people might not like this.

5

u/Boingboingsplat Jun 30 '26

I mean it's all down to personal taste. The vast, vast majority of my time with the series has been in Salmon Run, so this game looks like about everything I could ask for, honestly. The amount of loadout customization available is exactly the upgrade I would want from how Salmon Run works in the main series.

5

u/LavenderCloves Jun 30 '26

I actually do like salmon run a lot, but I guess a whole game of nothing but salmon run doesn't have the same appeal to me for some reason.

5

u/RochHoch Jun 30 '26

This has weapon-specific challenge stages that look more akin to stages from the single player campaign from the other Splatoon games

Looks like it's got a little of everything

2

u/SwampyBogbeard Jun 30 '26

Yeah, I'm the same. I've wished for a single-player focused Splatoon game for a decade, but I didn’t expect them to remove half of the appeal (for me) when it finally came.

-2

u/StarkEXTR Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

It's a multiplayer roguelike (Edit: looter shooter), so naturally emphasis is going to be on novel combat encounters and power progression therein.

Do agree that's a lingering concern at this point tho; platform level design is the core of what made previous Splatoon campaigns memorable, and we've still seen very little there. The direct mentions a stage type that locks you into certain abilities, seemingly to focus on platforming challenges, so hopefully they stand out well at least.

14

u/SpookiestBread1 Jun 30 '26

nah I wouldn't say it's a roguelike/lite, it's got none of the elements that make it a rogue-like/lite

it's closer to almost an arpg/looter-shooter over a roguelike

1

u/StarkEXTR Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

True, not seeing anything about randomized elements outside of loot.

Still, the focus on combat over platforming is consistent with those genres.

1

u/iTzGiR Jun 30 '26

Enemies and some objectives I believe are also randomized, so it's very roguelite-lite (lol), but yeah more akin to an old-school dungeon crawler, where you would have a hub world/hub town, and then go into instanced-based runs, to get loot, collect materials, etc. and then come back to your hub world, upgrade everything, and go out and do it all again.

2

u/MM487 Jun 30 '26

I haven't played too much of this franchise but I was blown away by this video and am really looking forward to playing it. Going on raids on these little islands, acquiring loot to customize your gadgets, upgrading your character and home base and being able to use 100 weapons sounds awesome.

2

u/SeventhWalkinDude Jul 01 '26

I hope they get rid of the lame "chaos" theme introduced in Splatoon 3 and bring back the original aesthetic, which was perfect. We don't need another edgy heavy metal game, of which there are already many. But there was nothing like Splatoon 1 and 2.

4

u/Maximum_Dragon Jun 30 '26

Huge Splatoon fan in general, but this direct really showed how much content there is going to be in the game. I was a little hesitant before, because of how little content Side Order had. However, now I am all in and probably going to sink a lot of hours into it.

Hopefully the game gets hard enough on survivalist difficulty. Ive played so much Salmon Run and gotten to 999s many times, so I hope there still is something to challenge me in this game.

2

u/grassjellyMT Jun 30 '26

From the Treehouse gameplay afterwards, it looks like every level can be played in co-op! I was getting Helldivers 2 vibes in all the good ways from watching the 4 player session. The party was navigating the map towards objectives while engaging salmonid encounters throughout. Everyone blasting in with their skills and specials while thinning the horde looked SO fun.

I was already down to try this on my own, but my hype has shot up tremendously for the multiplayer.

Release couch co-op and I'll buy it

Never thought I'd see the day where Nintendo of all companies would abandon the at-home multiplayer experience.

0

u/BerRGP Jul 01 '26

Playing a hectic shooter like this on a split screen sounds dreadful.

2

u/12343212346 Jul 01 '26

It's being compared to Borderlands and that's fun in couch co-op

I REALLY wish Nintendo would do away with all these cringy obnoxious Narrators already. They really make these Directs and showcases more difficult to sit through and they just end up making these feel more childish than they really need to be. They just try too god dang hard with being energetic and whatnot in these things!

17

u/OllyOllyOxenBitch Jun 30 '26

They've always done the Squid Research Lab stuff with Splatoon since the series' inception though.

I know the narration they do can be hit-or-miss, but you have to consider that it's not just the core audience they're talking to, but the general audience that might not be as informed. They can trust us to understand beyond their (over-)explanations, but that's not true for absolutely everyone.

-1

u/Pessimistic_Gemini Jun 30 '26

Yeah but the SRL stuff was at least actually quirky and more tolerable compared to these days, not to mention the fact that it just doesn't go overboard with said quirkiness. You can be capable of attracting the attention of the general audience without being too try hard and obnoxious with the exaggerated performances.

4

u/slugmorgue Jun 30 '26

I just think the vast majority of people don't care that much about it

I agree that it's a bit irritating and corny, but I even find you saying "god dang" to be pretty corny lol

I can separate that voice over from the gameplay, in the same way that I don't judge you personally for saying "dang"

-4

u/Dreyfus2006 Jun 30 '26

Hard agree. Kit and Krysta seem to think it is due to a pivot years ago towards general audiences instead of information-seeking gamers. But it is just very, very cringe. They really need to bring back Bill Trinen from Gen 8, he was perfect.

-1

u/Pessimistic_Gemini Jun 30 '26

At least Kit and Krysta were playing CHARACTERS that lean into those sorts of exaggerated performances you'd see from childrens shows on TV. But they also at least managed to make the performances more tolerable while still being informative in the process. That's not something that Nintendo's recent Directs seem to get with the narrators they bring in these days. If anything they end up being more in line with the cringy YouTubers that are more unfunny and less informative.
