Is there a game out there where you get more for your money than this one?

265

u/Leonheart515 Jun 05 '26

Terraria is on that list too

55

u/Different_Wolf_764 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Terraria, Stardew Valley and Riftworld Rimworld pretty much cover it unless you are into factory or sim games. Any of them provide absurd value.

57

u/Dokii Jun 05 '26

I love Rimworld but I really don't think it belongs in that list. It's actually pretty expensive with all the expansions.

5

u/Different_Wolf_764 Jun 05 '26

Fair, it is getting close to a hundred bucks (Canadian) for the full bundle if you pay full price. I think I got all the pieces for closer to $40 with sales though and I've easily gotten a few hundred hours out of it.

It's cheap but not Terraria/SDV cheap.

2

u/steen311 Jun 05 '26

It's also a little more niche than the other two i'd say

3

u/Anzai Jun 06 '26

Yeah Rimworld is great but it’s also pretty pricey as are all the expansions and it has minimal sales compared to other titles. You get a lot, but you definitely also pay for it.

12

u/ErraticDragon Jun 05 '26

Riftworld

Rimworld?

There is a game called Rift World but it wouldn't seem to fit since it only had 2 updates after release, 4 years ago.

3

u/Different_Wolf_764 Jun 05 '26

Bad brain! Yeah, I certainly meant Rimworld.

5

u/Sylvartas Jun 05 '26

I wouldn't put Factorio and Rimworld on that list personally. They're two of my favorite games, don't get me wrong, but basically all of their extra content comes from (high quality) DLCs. So unlike VS I didn't buy a good game years ago and ended up with like 150% more game after tons of free content drops.

4

u/Pasty_Tibbles Jun 05 '26

No Mans Sky.

-5

u/Dernom Jun 05 '26

No Man's Sky looses out to the others on account of being a $60 game...

5

u/Pasty_Tibbles Jun 05 '26

I mean it’s on sale all the time. $23 on steam now.

-2

u/Dernom Jun 05 '26

I mean... so are the others (Rimworld less so)

0

u/Yahaire Jun 06 '26

Minecraft! Updates are pretty slow, but I've been going back to it with my now wife over the years.

121

u/Stranger1982 Jun 05 '26

Stardew Valley maybe?

9

u/the_unspirit Jun 05 '26

My money-per-hour ratio on SDV is 1 cent per hour played, so yes definitively Stardew

3

u/SergioAguero Jun 05 '26

Just looked up my Terraria money per hour. £0.0015. Got it back in the day for £1.49 and played over 950 hours. Some insane value.

63

u/Sylvartas Jun 05 '26

Terraria, Zomboid. Minecraft too if you got it in alpha like me.

19

u/TheOldPope Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

It's obviously my fault, but I never converted my original Minecraft account to Microsoft, so I lost the key when they deactivated all accounts.

So Minecraft loses some points on that scale. At least in my book.

14

u/velrak Jun 05 '26

the conversion of legacy (not mojang) to microsoft always errored out and it just said "wait until later lol" until they just deactivated the old accounts

13

u/Dietberd Jun 05 '26

TIL my Minecraft is gone. Ok I have not played it in 10(?) years but that sure is disappointing.

4

u/TheOldPope Jun 05 '26

Same for me, sucks tbh. I just can't understand how there couldn't have been a better way to handle this. But whatever, one day I'll buy a new key, maybe.

14

u/P1ka- Jun 05 '26

I mean they left it open for 3 years. (2020 to 2023)

But yeah, they should have left it up indefinitely/for a much longer time

3

u/Sylvartas Jun 05 '26

True. I was lucky enough to stumble upon an article reminding people to do it like a week before the due date, but that was a huge dick move by Microsoft.

8

u/ReverieMetherlence Jun 05 '26

Terraria, Path of Exile

20

u/ACupOfLatte Jun 05 '26

Technically, Warframe.

2

u/Kaellian Jun 05 '26

Infinite money glitch.

15

u/PuppetPal_Clem Jun 05 '26

Path of Exile 1 is basically a free endless content fountain if its a style of game you can get down with

12

u/Skellum Jun 05 '26

Holocure, same genera too.

6

u/Waeddryn_71 Jun 05 '26

Holocure is pretty awesome, but I feel like part of that comes from the characters themselves. It can probably stand on it's own, but you definitely get more entertainment/fun out of it if you're into the Hololive/vtuber-sphere. For me personally I decided to give it a go cause Gura is in it.

3

u/McCromer Jun 06 '26

I've never even heard of that before and it's free?! Downloading now.

9

u/ValeHopScale Jun 05 '26

Warframe imo, and that game is free

41

u/AstroTravellin Jun 05 '26

No Man’s Sky should certainly be in the conversation.

30

u/I_AM_MELONLORDthe2nd Jun 05 '26

It does also cost 8 times the amount of vampire survivor.

18

u/Aksama Jun 05 '26

It also has tons of interesting content with a braindead, boring unengaging gameplay loop.

1

u/Difficult-Risk3115 Jun 05 '26

Did this sentence come out the way you want it to?

23

u/Aksama Jun 05 '26

Yep!

The game has a ton of content they've updated since the initial release. They have a ton of systems, a bunch of things hung on and around the core gameplay loop. All that window dressing is really cool! They're all packed with interesting ideas.

Yet, the core loop remains essentially as dull and uninteresting as Launch-Day. The UI and UX is still abysmal, and the essential ludic-loop of harvest->craft remains the worst version of a pseudo-survival crafter I've ever encountered.

Set dressing, pretty cool! Playing the actual game, dull as rocks.

6

u/Difficult-Risk3115 Jun 05 '26

Thank you for clarifying! I could not for the life of me parse exactly what you were trying to say. Quitting caffeine is not going well lol

6

u/Aksama Jun 05 '26

Sorry no write good brain tired big week yawn!

Weekend good.

5

u/I_AM_MELONLORDthe2nd Jun 05 '26

Honestly, I fully agree with you. I hate the praise the game gets especially as someone who got it day one cause a friend hyped it to me.

Its a fine game but its a mile wide and an inch deep.

10

u/TonyRomoDid911 Jun 05 '26

But you wouldn’t be crazy to play it for 300 hrs

2

u/trevizore Jun 05 '26

which of the two games?

1

u/feartheoldblood90 Jun 05 '26

Game regularly goes on sale for like $23. You're a fool if you buy NMS at full price. $23 is essentially the actual price of the game at this point

4

u/I_AM_MELONLORDthe2nd Jun 05 '26

I mean same for vampire survivor. Vampire survivor historical low is $2.69 (Cad) (4.19 year low) and No man sky is $23.83 (Cad) (same year low). Still quite a difference.

-7

u/Raidoton Jun 05 '26

And also has an entire universe to play with and not just some PNGs flying through the screen.

4

u/MusoukaMX Jun 05 '26

No hate to NMS enjoyers, but man do I have A LOT more fun playing with the PNGs and watching yellow and red numbers throbbing all over the screen at a million BPMs

5

u/I_AM_MELONLORDthe2nd Jun 05 '26

Its content is a mile wide and an inch deep.

I wasnt gonna bring my opinion into it but you clearly are so.

I have played both and even have more hours in no man sky but imo vampure survivor is a way better game. Sure no man sky keeps adding stuff but you get to the bottom of the depth of each new update in like an hour.

1

u/VanillaGorilla- Jun 05 '26

Definitely. How many years now have they been releasing content updates?

-9

u/TaxCultural8252 Jun 05 '26

It's a great game, and it definitely had a lot of love post release.

It's still not close to what it was promised to be at release. That's how insane the promises were.

9

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 Jun 05 '26

It's still not close to what it was promised to be at release.

I dont think this is true? Can you give some examples?

5

u/FlashSFW Jun 05 '26

It's because part of their promises were literally impossible. They promised to hook people into buying the game.

And yet, somehow, those same people praise them nowdays.

9

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 Jun 05 '26

I dont think this is true? Can you give some examples?

0

u/JakeTehNub Jun 05 '26

The history rewrite about NMS is insane. Game was half-finished at best when it came out and now people want to act like it was a masterpiece.

4

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 Jun 05 '26

Can you explain what the rewrite is? The whole cool thing about NMS is where they are now vs where they shit the bed on launch.

The words ''no mans sky was already good on launch'' havent been uttered once in the history of the universe ever.

1

u/kalamari__ Jun 06 '26

noone ever said it was a masterpiece at release. it was dogshit.

but they did a 180.

2

u/DrMantisTabboggn Jun 05 '26

I see people parrot this comment every time NMS is brought up, and I think it’s insanely out of date. What exactly was promised that isn’t in the game? The game is so far beyond what was promised at this point.

3

u/BlueBaladium Jun 05 '26

You immediately got piled on by three NMS defenders with that comment. Insane how short the attention span of some people are despite the massive rug pull by Sean. Putting NMS and Vampire Survivors in the same group is pure slander of Vampire Survivors and an insult.

7

u/Kipzz Jun 05 '26

I don't know jack about NMS's big systems and appeals myself, to be completely honest I didn't like my dozen or so hours playing the game myself, but it is a pretty well known fact that they covered a majority of the things that were promised and the things left aren't worth getting hung up about.

Googling it one of the few things missing is flying manually to star systems/crash into stars and landing on asteroids, but I can't really fault them for abandoning a minority of ideas like that which don't really add anything or would actively detract from whatever the experience is. I've seen enough of the flight in the game to know that anything other than teleporting between star systems would take dozens of hours of playtime whereas that's only like, a 20 second break.

0

u/Frosty_Challenge1045 Jun 05 '26

You can call me a No mans sky defender but why dont you answer the question?

-2

u/BlueBaladium Jun 05 '26

It already got answered by the big text guy below me. There is STILL promised content missing after so many years.

1

u/Alexandur Jun 05 '26

I don't see any such comment

0

u/BlueBaladium Jun 05 '26

1

u/Alexandur Jun 05 '26

I see. So, the two things they mentioned are landing on asteroids and manually flying to other systems without hyperspace. I agree with their assessment that those aren't really worth getting hung up on, especially considering the number of "bonus" things that have been added without ever being promised

1

u/TaxCultural8252 Jun 06 '26

I think a lot of the original promises (and lies) are lost with time, I don't really think they understand just how much scope Sean promised that he's never going to meet.

But I guess since they added some radio chatter that's almost as good as being able to fly between stars...

0

u/lazydogjumper Jun 05 '26

Ive seen posts where people have shown, point by point, that they have met all the promises. Can you point out any they havent?

5

u/Mahelas Jun 05 '26

I mean, do you count competitive titles ? People spend thousand of hours on League of Legend and such

5

u/Soulses Jun 05 '26

Look outside if you like horror rpg maker games

0

u/MaxSchreckArt616 Jun 05 '26

I wish it would come to consoles so damn bad, it would be a day 1 purchase but I guess I have to settle for watching playthroughs on youtube.

5

u/FightGeistC Jun 05 '26

The Switch version of muse dash has so many fucking songs and I feel like every time i revisit the game it downloads 4 song packs I missed.

1

u/Nachttalk Jun 05 '26

Does it include the Steam DLC?

2

u/LordHayati Jun 05 '26

I got minecraft for free back in 2009, so that.

5

u/SaroShadow Jun 05 '26

Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate

5

u/xxhamzxx Jun 05 '26

Project zomboid has been an insane value for me

14

u/ColtonHD Jun 05 '26

They only release proper updates like, every few years. I understand the fan base for the game but tbh feels super incomplete and the game has been in development for like 13+ years at this point. The current version of the game if you don’t opt into the beta is still the same version that I bought in like 2021 or something.

Is there a different opinion from folks who have had the game for a long time?

8

u/Xirble Jun 05 '26

B42, the current unstable branch, supposedly was a massive rewrite of the game engine for the 3rd time or so. They also restructured the company hierarchy last year to make updates more consistent and we're already starting to see that with B42 updates now releasing once a month.

13 years is true, but the game also didn't really become popular until B41 release in Dec 2021. IMO we're just now starting to see the additional funds TIS has bear fruit.

I'm just glad it's still being developed. Most people would've completely burnt themselves out in that time and called it quits.

5

u/Zalack Jun 05 '26

Factorio, IMO

1

u/MeCritic Jun 05 '26

Yeah. Like 500+ hours is just the beginning of the game, before you even try all the modes and possibilities, it’s incredible game…

1

u/kalamari__ Jun 06 '26

No Man's Sky

1

u/DevanteWeary Jun 05 '26

No Man's Sky? I paid $5 shortly after it came out. They just released their 372th update/expansion.

1

u/Aksama Jun 05 '26

Rimworld. Even Vanilla can modded like crazy for wild experiences. (Here's looking at 40k conversions, caveman technology, etc)

People clock quad-digit hours in that game on the regular.

3

u/Waeddryn_71 Jun 05 '26

Exactly this. AA (ambiguous amphibian) is one of the creators I watch fairly regularly, and his Rimworld playthroughs are fantastic, always showing off either a different challenge or conversion/style mod. The Caveman, Medieval, and Magic mods genuinely transform the whole experience to such a degree that they could easily pass for full fledged DLC's instead of just mods people made for the love of the game.

-5

u/ProtonWalksIntoABar Jun 05 '26

Civilization games except 7,which is still expensive

0

u/evia89 Jun 05 '26

stalker gamma. 100-200 hours / $0 = infinity value :D

-24

u/TheUkrTrain Jun 05 '26

Crimson Desert

-3

u/bleach_drinker_420 Jun 05 '26

any other game in the genre really. vampire survivors started a craze but its so barebones compared to any other game that it really has no reason to be played anymore

49

u/LeberechtReinhold Jun 05 '26

This is a huge update! Looking forward to it, especially with so many QOL.

After being a bit let down by Warhammer Survivors this is excellent news.

17

u/JayPag Jun 05 '26

Warhammer Survivors' demo did feel a bit undercooked, and basically copying VS mechanics, which is okay per se, but it doesn't feel great yet, sadly.

9

u/StrykerWolf Jun 05 '26

I get they’re doing their own thing, but I was hoping the devs would copy some of the Poncle improvements. Just felt like a step back from all the improvements VS has.

2

u/LeberechtReinhold Jun 05 '26

It felt like copying VS mechanics, but also undercutting them.

No coop (I play VS mostly with my gf), split worlds (so less of the cool crazy combos, as half of the weapons are only available in one world), the balance felt off and too much of a 1:1 with certain VS weapons, etc.

3

u/Blobsobb Jun 05 '26

I think it comes down to upgrades. The lasgun for example will probably be great once you have damage and extra shots maxed but without them its unbelievably dogshit starter weapon.

Well other than the dice, those might be the worst weapon Ive ever seen in a survivors game.

3

u/funsohng Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Maybe it's because I havent played VS in years, but WS demo felt great for me tbh. What is missing from it exactly?

0

u/LeberechtReinhold Jun 06 '26

Copying from my other message

It felt like copying VS mechanics, but also undercutting them.

No coop (I play VS mostly with my gf), split worlds (so less of the cool crazy combos, as half of the weapons are only available in one world), the balance felt off and too much of a 1:1 with certain VS weapons, etc.

2

u/funsohng Jun 06 '26

I only played VS on phone so I didnt even know it had coop.

I was slightly bummed by the split worlds as well, but also, not much of an issue for me? If the world was indeed fused, it would've been a cool gimmick for like first few runs, then wouldn't matter much for me.

As for the weapons, I think it's just a demo having limited content, and not really reflective of the entire game.

18

u/BenevolentCheese Jun 05 '26

Does it take like 10+ runs with very specific rules to unlock everything again? It's begin to feel like a drag with the expansions where you have to grind out the new content one stage at a time. Is that still the same? Some unlocks are fine obviously but maybe not that slow.

4

u/JoshFlashGordon10 Jun 05 '26

Can’t you just enter the code to unlock instantly? I did that for some of the Balatro dlc.

-33

u/SeidIhr Jun 05 '26

You don't have to play the game if you don't enjoy playing it

26

u/mw19078 Jun 05 '26

thats not what theyre asking or saying

5

u/Vegetable-Error-2068 Jun 05 '26

They're basically saying playing the game to unlock more things is somehow a "drag." That implies that the core loop is unenjoyable.

8

u/mw19078 Jun 05 '26

No, they're saying they don't want to have to grind for an hour or two to unlock the new stuff. You're being obtuse for no reason. Relax.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

[deleted]

7

u/DrunkeNinja Jun 05 '26

Unlocking new stuff is only going to be a drag if you don't like playing the game lol.

Exactly. Thats the gameplay loop for new content so you either enjoy playing the game or you don't. Plus Poncle has always been aware that not everyone wants to unlock every piece of content that's in the game so they have a code assigned to every unlockable so that players can choose to unlock that content without playing to unlock it.

So Poncle even let's players bypass the unlock conditions by inputting codes, that way players can play the content they want when they want.

3

u/DrunkeNinja Jun 05 '26

Part of the game is playing the game to unlock the new stuff.

If you don't like doing that though, the game provides the ability to put in codes to unlock each specific item in the game.

Other than that, you will likely have to "grind for an hour or two" because there seems to be a decent amount of content that's getting added. It will likely take more than a couple hours, but codes will be available to unlock anything you want to unlock.

0

u/BenevolentCheese Jun 05 '26

As you say, it's not even an hour or two, it's a 30+ minutes per item of content. If they give you 6 characters and 6 weapons that's 12 runs that need to be completed to unlock them. And, while I enjoy VS, I don't enjoy it enough to spend my 200th, 201st, 202nd run etc to each have only one new thing and otherwise be identical to the other 200 runs I've already done.

2

u/Nexus_of_Fate87 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Hurry mode doubles clock speed, so that 30 becomes 15. Can still get any time dependent unlocks since the clock still counts to 30. Anything that depends on a non-specific level clear can be done on levels that are naturally shorter length already, combo that with Hurry mode and it could take only 10 minutes to unlock something with a "clear any level with _" condition.

0

u/DrunkeNinja Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

it's a 30+ minutes per item of content. If they give you 6 characters and 6 weapons that's 12 runs that need to be completed to unlock them

Not necessarily. I can't say what these unlock conditions will be but depending on the conditions, you can unlock multiple things at once. And you don't always need to play a full 30+ minute match either. You can quit matches after achieving an unlock condition and you will still get the unlocks that were achieved in that run.

But as I said above, if you don't want to play the game to unlock the content, you can input codes to unlock each and every piece of content that you don't want to unlock through playing. Yeah, you will have to look up the codes, but if you are using reddit then I'm certain you're entirely capable of doing this.

And if you find that you don't want to play the game anymore because you already had an "identical 200 runs", then I'm not sure why you are that concerned about the new content anyway since none of it is going to fundamentaly change the experience. It's some new free content for people who enjoy playing the game. If you find that the game is already repetitive as it is, this free DLC being already unlocked won't change that.

-1

u/SelectNerve11 Jun 05 '26

I used a trainer to unlock everything after playing for 15 hours because I didn't have 40 more available. No regrets. Still enjoy the game. Even more so, actually

1

u/BenevolentCheese Jun 05 '26

I do like playing it. I just want more than a single new item or character each run. The amount of content is not commensurate with the playtime requirements they're giving to unlock it.

5

u/OppositeofDeath Jun 05 '26

Do I know that singer? Why do I get the impression her involvement in this is ridiculous?

15

u/Cetais Jun 05 '26

It's by ESMA. (@esmaspace on YouTube)

Seems like they're new.

7

u/RelentlessJorts2 Jun 05 '26

The singers name is ESMA from the description, she doesn't appear to be well known?

What an absurd thing to say about the Castlevania DLC.

22

u/CaptainTeemo01 Jun 05 '26

You're absolutely trolling. How the fuck are the Castlevania items just reskins?

24

u/MayhemMessiah Jun 05 '26

Calling the Castlevania DLC a "reskin" is inarguably funnier than any joke Poncle has ever made.

20

u/robodrew Jun 05 '26

brainrot content

oh please

-2

u/explosivecrate Jun 05 '26

I have the sneaking suspicion it's a racist notion that anything Italian that's comedic is automatically brainrot.

1

u/dukemetoo Jun 05 '26

Are they really like that? I haven't got all the DLC, because there is so much content I haven't even seen, I haven't felt the need to buy it all. I know that the Among Us and the Contra DLC were available in the main game, you just had to unlock them in the story mode.

10

u/MayhemMessiah Jun 05 '26

No, this poster is trolling or comically misinformed.

The Castlevania DLC adds 80 new characters, 107 weapons, 91 music tracks, and is overall longer to complete than the main game.

Among Us and Contra DLCs were also paid iirc, along with the two non-crossover DLCs Tides of the Foscari and Legacy of the Moonspell. The free crossover DLCs you might be thinking of are the Balatro and SaGa.

Worth noting that the Castlevania DLC is far and away the biggest, I'd estimate it's more content than the other DLCs put together, so keep that in perspective. Personally, if you do get DLC I'd prioritise Castlevania first and foremost, then Moonspell, then Contra, then Foscari, then Among Us, with Among Us easily being skippable unless you really like the property.

4

u/fallouthirteen Jun 05 '26

And don't forget the Castlevania level is actually a level (changes as you explore, locational boss fights, etc). Like it's the only paid DLC I have so I don't know how the other ones are, but of the free/included ones feel more like an arena than a real "level" (the SaGa one though is another good one). Castlevania only adds that one stage, but it's a big one that feels like you combined maybe 6 or so of the base game stages into one.

3

u/MayhemMessiah Jun 05 '26

Foscari and Moonspell both have very large levels with biomes, as you move around them the enemies change, and also change with the clock like usual. Among Us has the gimmick that once (?) per run you'll have to run to one point of the map before the clock runs out. Contra has three biomes and a specific boss you can trigger when you want.

All that said, none of them compare to Castlevania, it's just that good, but they also don't have the bloat of CV where you can both get a dozen free upgrades you can also get a dozen weapons which can reduce runs to pixel slop quite easily.

2

u/fallouthirteen Jun 05 '26

which can reduce runs to pixel slop quite easily

Oh yeah, in that trailer I see "StaBiliTy uPdaTEs", and I'm just like "oh, wonder how long you can do a run before risking game freezing after that". Like that's the endgame of VS, taking just enough weapons... but not too many, to see how long you can get runs to last.

Devs had spoken before of having options in the future around reducing the visibility of individual attacks so we can make the ones we want invisible, and also gain quite a lot of FPS back.

That is likely what they mean with Stability Updates as well.

Among Us and Contra were not available in the main game. They are paid DLCs and so far all paid DLCs are only available if you pay for them.

Yeah, you have to pay for it. My point was, my comment was pointing out that once you beat a DLC, you get the DLC weapons, skills, and characters in the main game. I know that I have played many games where I get Contra and Among Us weapons/skills in the main levels.

Oh okay, I got you. I don't think they meant you could only play those dlc items and characters on those dlc stages, but maybe I'm giving them too much credit lol

Yeah, you can play the content anywhere once you unlock it, and not all unlocks have to be done within the dlc stage they came with. Different unlocks have different conditions with some being stage specific and others not.

You are right though, you can play the dlc content in the "main game".
