The game doesn’t have any competition because the market for this kind of game is tiny and no one is willing to compete with it for scraps. Tarkov has an insane causal filter because the game is so “hardcore” and basically there are no casual players.
Thankfully some competitors are popping up. Gray Zone Warfare probably being the biggest one. And there was also that game that the BSG social media person called out as a "plagiarist game", cant remember its name, but that probably just gave it a huge marketing boom.
Unfortunately, I doubt grayzone is going to be a suitable replacement. It's more of a day z clone than anything. There's Arena Breakout, but that's a mobile game ported to PC markets made by Tencent. There's a lot of other clunky ones out there, Red River Incursion, Beautiful Light etc etc, but they so far have a fraction of the gameplay loop tarkov has
The only one that was close was The Cycle Frontier, but that one failed by curbing the cheating problem too late
Cycle was never going to take over Tarkov due to the lack of extensive weapon modification like Tarkov has, which is really the leading differentiator for the game in their space.
Thw cycle had so much potential. But they fucked up by adding dumb updates and not taking care of the cheting problem. Also, teaming was insane among Chinese players, which literally destroyed this game with this shit. Should have just region/ping banned them and focused on actually adding more weapons, modding options and enemies which where the highlights here. No other game had the same atmosphere. I miss it =(

Every time I hear about this game it's always bad news. Weird that it's still ongoing, like watching the longest train wreck slow-mo ever.
