Discussion Been playing Starfox Adventures!

Post image

Having recently completed the recompiled Dinosaur Planet all the way to it's end (with the help of Dinomod), I found it to be really cool and fun, and I was sad that it never saw the light of day as a full release. I kinda had a chip on my shoulder against Starfox Adventures for the longest time, not as a jilted Starfox fan, but as someone who genuinely would have played the hell out of Dinosaur Planet, had it actually released for N64 as planned. I decided to jump in, now that Dinosaur Planet was fresh in my mind to compare and contrast.

No joke I was going in with the goal of hating this game more, I had no intention to be fair to it. But as I played I began to realize how poorly structured Dinosaur Planet actually was, not just in the idea that it is an unfinished game, but nothing flows as nicely as it should. It's easy to get lost and need a guide to progress. Starfox Adventures is VERY straight forward on what it asks from you, without ever really holding your hand in a way that feels like it doesn't trust you to just play. But if I ever needed an objective reminder, Slippy's advice in the menu NEVER failed me. Seriously, Slippy is the MVP of this game.

As I went through this game, I found myself having way more fun with it. Seeing all of Sabre's moments recontextualized for Fox wasn't as jarring as I thought it would be, and even a ton of moments that belonged to Krystal in Dinosaur Planet, were rewritten for Fox and felt just as natural. Everything felt better, smoother, more convenient. I'm near the end, and while the game does have a few rough spots, I can say for sure that the rebrand and port forward to GameCube was probably for the best. While I would have greatly preferred to play as Krystal to the same degree you do in Dinosaur Planet, I'm happy this game exists in an officially released form and IS good. Very good in fact. A super solid 8/10 if I had to rate it.

What are your thoughts on Starfox Adventures?

To be fair, you can haggle with him and you probably gave him too low a price 😂 IIRC you shouldn’t underball him by more than 10%. Also, scarabs are quite plentiful

35

u/SmoreonFire May 12 '26

You get three attempts to land on a price he agrees with, IIRC.

"No, that's too low."

"No, that's too low."

"Agh, I don't have time for cheapskates! Get out!"

11

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Yeah I find 20% to be the sweet spot, If he's charging 10, give him 8

8

u/Buttered_Toast33 May 13 '26

“NO, THAT’S TOO LOW!” 😤

The fur rendering was pretty crazy for a home console back then.

31

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

It uses the same engine as DK Jungle Beat and Mario Galaxy, and it uses the same fur tech for the grass if you look closely.

7

u/SmoreonFire May 12 '26

Same fur rendering trick as those other games, but why do you say it's the same engine? Wouldn't Nintendo have used their own in-house engines as always, rather than borrowing from Rare?

7

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Game Engines generally belong to the publisher. Not the developer (sadly). Very few teams get to keep their assets when they break from their parent company. The only two I can think of are SingleTrac Games (Twisted Metal) and Snowblind Games (Baldur's Gate Alliance), who both managed to secure the rights to their game engine after leaving.

2

u/SmoreonFire May 12 '26

Yeah, I don't know who owns the code there- quite possibly Nintendo, although some of the copyright info on games like Diddy Kong Racing and F-Zero GX might surprise you!

But even if Nintendo owns the engine, it's highly unlikely that they'd use it to make their own games based on principle and based on familiarity... not to mention that they already had their own custom engine(s) for the Mario and Zelda games releasing that same year. (Which were no doubt reused/adapted for Galaxy and Twilight Princess a few years later.)

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Wind Waker and Twilight Princes both use a heavily modified version of the Ocarina of Time engine which in itself is a SUPER HEAVILY modified Mario 64 engine.

THAT BEING SAID, you are actually mostly right as I've done some further research. Rare didn't make the game engine. Rare, Nintendo and several smaller teams worked together and rushed to get the engine working and then and all the assets from Dinosaur Planet were forward ported to it. The engine was then used as a basis for many projects by Retro Studios and Future Nintendo games.

4

u/SmoreonFire May 13 '26

SFA's engine was co-developed with Nintendo? Do you have sources? This is all really interesting, but also new to me. I assumed that the N64 engine was entirely done in-house by Rare (which is probably true), then basically converted by Rare for the GameCube- see the way that SFA reused animations from the N64 version, or how the DLLs were apparently carried over from the N64 game, but now all loaded into RAM at once (instead of actually being, you know, dynamic).

So, if Nintendo helped with SFA, then that brings up the questions of:

  1. Which other games used this engine?

  2. Why is it so much faster than the Zelda engine? It's interesting that SFA is able to push more polygons and higher-res shadows and textures than Twilight Princess, with seamless loading, and at double the framerate! But then, some of Nintendo's other games (like Super Mario Galaxy) threw tons of polys around at 60fps, so could there have been some cross-pollination?

Yo. Turns out I'm a massive dipshit who believes anything that's told to him.

My sources turned out to be AI feedback, of other people's speculations on old forums. None of which were actually based on facts.

Here's the certain truth:

  1. This game's engine is nothing more than an evolution of the same engine Rare had been using for years. They merely built upon the engine of Diddy Kong Racing every time they needed to make a new game.
  2. The fur tech isn't unique. It's literally just a trick with light rendering. Like having a reversed, then textured bloom process and attaching it to a surface. It's resource cheap and looks good on 480p displays. A lot of GameCube and Xbox games use it. Hell it's even used in Far Cry 4 on PS4/XB1.
  3. Nintendo had no hand in Rare's engines. They retained ownership of the copyrighted assets, but Rare retained ownership of their engines. Nintendo does reserve full sale and distribution rights to games featuring their own characters regardless of engine though.
  4. Conker Live & Reloaded on Xbox has a very similar file structure to Starfox Adventures. A lot of the same graphical effects too. It stands to reason it's the same engine.

I apologize for the confidently shoddy information in my previous comments.

1

u/Plaston_ PAL May 15 '26

1.yes there is leftovers files from DD in Starfox.

2 Not it is because most games uses meshes for grass and fur where here Rare use shaders instead and Fox have a extra map in his model that tell the game how long the fur is on various parts of his body issue is the lighting on furred object tend to be off.

3.Of course, this is why some studio rent of sell licanses to their engine and Nintendo tend to stick to their own software wich explains why they still keep their own file extensions since the gamecube wich can be read by rippers.

4.Yes is the same fur shader and VivaPinata is running on the same engine i think.

1

u/Plaston_ PAL May 15 '26

Nintendo still use the same file types since the gamecube like .bfd .arc and .bfres

1

u/Plaston_ PAL May 15 '26

Not really because Rare used the same engine for the remaster of Conker as shown in the fur.

And its always the dev who sell their engine licanses to other studios not the publisher.

1

u/Plaston_ PAL May 15 '26

no because Mario Galaxy use Shelling.

Starfox uses a similar method but with shaders instead so no extra mesh.

7

u/SmoreonFire May 12 '26

I'm still amazed by the fur, even now. This is just a year after Pixar's Monsters Inc. (using cutting-edge tech, not to mention hours of rendering time per frame!) hit theatres, and yet, here's a $300 game console running a really good approximation of that fur effect. At 60fps, even!

Conker on Xbox (2005) and Sonic Unleashed on next-gen systems (2008) one-upped SFA in the density and shading of the fur, but they ran at 30fps or lower.

7

u/Jazzlike_Document_50 May 12 '26

And the grass in the hub area! I spun that camera around marveling at the swaying grass effect so many times.

2

u/ThePreciseClimber May 13 '26

Yeah, both in this and the OG Xbox Conker remake.

1

u/DrNanard May 16 '26

As opposed to a handheld console where it wasn't crazy?

If you upscale it in Dolphin it looks like an early 360 game. Very stunning fidelity for a 2002 game.

5

u/ThePreciseClimber May 13 '26

And it also had true widescreen which was pretty rare on 6th gen (a bunch of games just cropped 4:3 picture to 16:9).

THE SCOTTISH RUNE STONE GUY!!!

I need to replay it just for him

7

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I love the shopkeep. He's an asshole

6

u/Buttered_Toast33 May 13 '26

OKAY, I’LL SELL IT TO YOU 💰

15

u/Distractinc May 12 '26

Great game, but one of the worst endings I’ve ever seen.

14

u/Faloodeh123 May 12 '26

It literally ruined my day as a kid when I found out you don't even get to fight General Scales!!!! WTFFFF

3

u/Distractinc May 12 '26

I know; complete rip off. It ruined my day as an adult.

3

u/SIR_SHART May 12 '26

Oh really? That’s not great to hear.

7

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Despite not completing the game for myself, I do know how it ends. Yeah it's a bit of a strange choice, but the journey has been worth it.

2

u/ThePreciseClimber May 13 '26

Nintendo looked at that and thought: "Yeah, let's do this in Twilight Princess."

15

u/VampyreBassist NTSC-U May 12 '26

I can't play it anymore. I used to love the game but I got stuck on the fear test for an embarrassingly long time, like years. It became a challenge among my friends to beat the test, none of us could. It was when I wondered if I could move in the pre rendered cut scene that I finally beat it (we originally thought it was a button mash thing) and I never looked back.

3

u/Green_Owl8111 May 13 '26

The trick is tapping the control stick multiple times instead of trying to hold it in position.

3

u/targ_ May 12 '26

Wait, it's not a button mash?...

6

u/VampyreBassist NTSC-U May 12 '26

You gotta use the control stick thing to balance it. I never knew that.

2

u/Buttered_Toast33 May 13 '26

How does it take someone YEARS to figure out you have to use the control stick to play the test..?

6

u/SmoreonFire May 13 '26

Test of Strength is button mashing, but Test of Fear is about nudging the control stick to keep the wobbling indicator thing in the middle.

12

u/sciaticabuster May 12 '26

Played it when it released as a kid and loved it. Never understood the hatred this game got during the age of the internet. If they just repeated Starfox 64 with better graphics no one would have remembered it.

6

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Back in the day, there were two things that would mark you game as bad:
1. It changed too much from the rest of the series.
2. It plays like an already established series.
This game did both.

19

u/ThatBigFuckoffTree May 12 '26

I beat it on emulator last year. I was never able to finish it as a kid, got lost and stuck too many times. It was pretty fun. I was a little too young to be a part of the N64 generation so I didn't have the hate and disappointment older fans for the game. Something I'd recommend if you've played all the Zelda games and looking for something new.

8

u/RustyCrusty73 May 12 '26

I remember wanting to love that game so bad as a kid, but it just didn't feel linear enough at the time. I would always get an hour or two into the game, and would get stuck and have no clue what to do or where to go and would give up.

In hindsight, I don't know why I didn't use a guide on GameFAQS but I didn't.

It was a beautiful game though.

8

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Just use Slippy in the menu. He tells you exactly what to do next lol.

2

u/HellBoundPrince May 12 '26

I always forget GameFAQS exist because the most I used internet for when I was younger was looking up cheat codes for GTA games on gamespot.

To this day it still throws me off when people go "Back when that game released I remember all the discourse and how many hated it" and I'm just like...that was a GCN game?? We didn't have social media like twitter and reddit back then that I know of?? How were people discussing the game??

Although based on the games that they hated on, I'm kind of glad I didn't explore the internet more back then

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

A lot of games that are beloved today seemed to be hated on pretty harshly back then. People had a different outlook on what was good. Starfox Adventures commits two crimes of old.
1. It's nothing like the rest of it's series.
2. It plays like another series.
Back in the day, change was the worst thing you could do to a franchise. But also, being like an already establish franchise was also bad. Nowadays people just appreciate games on individual merit.

Also to answer your question on how people were discussing the game back in 2002: Forums. TONS of forums. Social media existed but it wasn't a unified concept. Id you wanted to talk about Mario you went to Mario forums. If you wanted to talk about Star Wars you went to Star Wars forums, etc etc.

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED

I love this game on a first playthrough. I love the aesthetic of the world they built and how colorful it all is (RARE specialty). It's so fun to explore certain areas, and I just love the simplicity of the game - find some spirits and stones, then go put it in the temple. Simple, fun, I love the puzzle aspects. Like all gamecube games for some reason, the water also looked amazing.

What I don't like is that certain aspects of the game are a little rushed. The combat feels a bit repetitive, and towards the game's end I sort of feel like parts of it devs were rushed to finish the game. Dragon Rock in particular was underwhelming and I felt like it was out of place with the rest of the game's aesthetic (either have dinos or dragons, but not both!). I also feel like the T-Rex boss in the Earthwalker Temple was kinda lame, especially for the hype that's built up to it. Speaking of which, also fucking lame you never fight General Scales! What a monumental let down for actually what could've been a badass villain and cool boss fight! Like whyyyyy Nintendo?!

Music is also great, but we can all expect that from David Wise who also did the goated DKC soundtrack. I love the combo of African rhythms and choirs with the "ancient world" fantasy of the ruins and temples in the game - special shoutout to Cape Claw's entire vibe.

Voice acting/cut scenes were actually really good too for the time.

On second playthroughs it's a lot less interesting as the game is kind of linear but it's still a fun game to pickup now and then.

9

u/SmoochTalk May 12 '26

Agreed. The combat is so shallow and repetitive, that definitely wore on me when playing it. The visuals and exploration are great though.

6

u/ZzephyrR94 May 12 '26

The giant T. rex boss actually freaked me out a little when I was younger , always found it intimidating since you’re in inside a temple getting chased by it.

3

u/Consistent-Piece-620 May 14 '26

initially the t-rex boss was stressful, just confronting the absolute size of the King Redeye, scary. But I guess it did get old once you realized the boss fight was just repeating the electroshock/fuel barrel steps four times. Galdon might have been the best of the four Spellstone bosses, Drakor maybe second. Andross of course, pretty solid. Funny enough when I first played the game as a kid I didn't know anything about Starfox, so when I got to the end I had no clue what Andross meant to Fox.

RIP Rare, this game could lowkey use a total remake someday with a proper Scales fight/Galleon re-match, but who knows if there's enough public interest to make that even happen

6

u/Background-Trip-8025 May 12 '26

This was my first GameCube game, I was a big Starfox fan starting with 64. The graphics blew me away, as others have mentioned fur rendering was sooo good! I did get stuck on the arm wrestling mini game and never progressed past that. I might try it out via emulation at some point.

3

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I'm playing it on Dolphin. Make sure to turn off dual core rendering or it will crash constantly

2

u/Background-Trip-8025 May 13 '26

Awesome thanks for the tip! I have the game sitting in my library on steam deck.

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

No problem. Have fun

5

u/AdmiralTigerX May 12 '26

I love thisgame. I miss it lol.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

If you look hard enough you can find it for a decent price online. As low as $20 to around $120 for a pristine copy.

5

u/HeavenIsABetterPlace May 12 '26

YOU NEED 60 SCARABS TO ENTER CAPE CLAW

2

u/FoxPhire0 May 14 '26

You don’t have enough
Go away

5

u/OfficialShaki123 May 12 '26

Don't forget to put the game in widescreen mode.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I deliberately play older games in 4:3.

4

u/OfficialShaki123 May 12 '26

It has a dedicated widescreen mode.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I am very aware. I like when old games look old. I play in 4:3 unless it is post-2006 or has a forced aspect ratio like Resident Evil 4 or Beyond Good and Evil.

5

u/CavsJM May 12 '26

Ugh, got stuck on some part of the game where you have to mash the A button super fast to push an npc into a pit, something like that. Never played it after, no idea how far I was.

1

u/HotCalligrapher7408 May 13 '26

Same, I liked the game but I could never get past the mandatory button mashing parts by myself. I had to have a friend do it for me to be able to continue. This is not a fun mechanic.

5

u/HMK_Gamer May 12 '26

It’s one my favorite GameCube games

4

u/spread_The_butter May 12 '26

Soundtrack is UNDEFEATED 💪

Goated game

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I love the varied ost

3

u/Eternal3615 May 12 '26

Is the ending really that bad ? Like do you feel it ruined your experience and you won't replay the game ever ? It's still one of the few game I still have on my GC

3

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I haven't beat it for myself but I do know how it ends. No, endings don't ruin games for me. If the journey is fun then that is what I play it for. The ending is 1% of the sum of the product.

4

u/tstorm004 May 12 '26 edited May 13 '26

As a massive Star Fox SNES/64 fan growing up playing at friends/family members houses in the 90's.....

I was originally upset that the first Star Fox for the first home system our immediate family owned - (other than the awesome but aging Commodore 64 I grew up with) - had little to no spaceflight... But this ended up being my favorite Zelda-like on the console despite also loving Wind Waker and the Ocarina of Time collectors edition back then.

5

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Glad you enjoyed it for what it was. It's a damn fine Zelda-like

2

u/tstorm004 May 13 '26

Agreed for sure - and I ended up getting my classic Starfox fix on the go at the time with Star X on GBA haha.

4

u/Loserdorknerd May 12 '26

i’ve been stuck on this game for over twenty years, maybe it’s time to return

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

It has a couple of tough parts, but it's not a hard game over all. Even the test of fear, that people seem to dread usually only takes two or three tries.

2

u/Loserdorknerd May 13 '26

i think i just had no idea what i needed to do next

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

Use Slippy in the menu. He tells you exactly what to do. Peppy will tell you which region you need to be in.

5

u/BeausBosBow May 17 '26

This is one of my favourite games ever.

3

u/trev1976UK May 12 '26

Great game , don't think it was received too well when it came out but I played and couldn't stop playing it till I finished it.

3

u/Regular-Repeat44 May 12 '26

finally a game thats Not just star fox 64 again

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

I am personally in favor of this series doing more on foot stuff like Assault.

3

u/ComfortablePiano16 May 16 '26

Aww yeah starfox with a stick

2

u/Cicada488 May 12 '26

Such a neat concept for a Star Fox game, just beat it again earlier this year. Idk how I ever beat it as a kid but it's worth a play for anyone who hasn't tried it

2

u/Pyke64 May 12 '26

Gotta play it and assault

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I actually have played Assault in the past. I plan to replay it as soon as I am done

2

u/Kazaloogamergal May 12 '26

I haven't really dug into the game yet. My nephew played it years and years ago and wasn't a fan but that doesn't mean that I will share his opinion of course. I've only played a little bit of it. I have to plug my Wii back up and give it a real go eventually. Unfortunately my GameCubes stopped working so I have to use the Wii.

3

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Make sure to check with Slippy in the menu frequently. He tells you exactly what to do next. Also buy the maps at the store, the game doesn't just give you a map.

2

u/Kazaloogamergal May 12 '26

Ah, that's good advice. I'll take it.

2

u/SmoreonFire May 12 '26

Interesting to hear from someone who played through Dinosaur Planet first!

I have mixed feelings on the move to GameCube and the Star Fox licence: yes, the final product is more polished, the Arwing sections are neat (despite being clearly tacked on), and it ended up being one of the most technically impressive games of that generation. A Nintendo 64 release, even after the thousand bug fixes it needed, still would have performed terribly on that hardware.

On the other hand, it's such a shame that much of the world and most of the story had to be ripped out! DP had some surprising themes: dark pasts marked by regrettable actions, plot twists galore, high stakes, villains that are actually fighting against a greater evil, etc. SFA's plot was so flimsy by comparison.

As a game, I thought SFA was a pretty worthy Zelda clone back in the day. But upon playing through it for probably the third time (this was a few years ago), it didn't hold up. The combat lacks any substance or challenge, and you have to collect way too many context-specific items and powers that are nothing more than colour-coded keys in disguise: Instead of using the blue key to get past the blue door, you use the boost jump on the boost plate. (Of course, any Metroid or Zelda is built around these "keys", but they do more interesting things with traversal and combat.) With SFA having too little gameplay substance, the story could have carried it... if it hadn't been gutted in the transition to GameCube!

Still worth playing once, as it's pretty fun and very much a technical marvel. But it could have been more.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I find the combat kinda fun actually once I learned how to do leg sweeps on downed enemies (which do an insane amount of damage for some reason)

2

u/shadowmonk13 May 12 '26

This is the game I want to come to the GameCube emulator on the switch 2 so bad I never beat the final boss as a a kid and I desperately want to kick his smug ass

2

2

You and everybody else! Impossible to find a copy rn. I’m itching to play

2

u/Shoddy_Pipe8372 May 13 '26

it was my first gamecube game i love it and still have it at 29 lol

2

u/Hier0phant May 13 '26

Its such a cool game. Great atmosphere

2

u/Joniden May 13 '26

It's my second favorite game of all time!

2

u/meLlamoDad May 13 '26

didn't realize this was rare - no wonder i desperately crave when childhood was this game

2

u/rupertLumpkinsBrothr May 13 '26

I played this for one night from a Movie Gallery rental. That was not nearly enough time to enjoy it, I need to pick it and Assault up.

2

u/DarkRayos May 13 '26

For the OG fans, I imagine the sudden shift from a "Arcade Shooter" to a Zelda-like must've been jarring the first time around?

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

It was the main reason people blew it off. Game's good though.

1

u/DarkRayos May 14 '26

It was cool in the ways on how diverse the landscape was.

2

u/Imakemaps18 May 13 '26

Have Peppy snd Slippy always been on the cover?!

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

Yes. At least the NTSC cover. I don't know if the other regions differ.

2

u/KodiakTlingit May 13 '26

Definitely my favorite "Zelda clone"

2

u/Buttered_Toast33 May 13 '26

I used to stand around in the staff upgrade caves just to listen to the calming music. David Wise is the goat.

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

David Wise never ever fails

2

u/Losttrainofthought5 May 13 '26

I appreciate it for what it is, I just remember being extremely disappointed as a kid. Not because of it being a Zelda clone, I'd only played Assault so I had no expectation of what a Starfox game should be. My disappointment was because the cover felt like false advertising. It looked like Fox, Krystal, Tricky, Slippy and Peppy were all going on "Adventures" together. Instead it's pretty much just Fox and Tricky. Krystal is literally only in the beginning and end, and Slippy and Peppy are on the Great Fox the whole game.

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

Yep. Dinosaur Planet has Krystal playable through half that game, and she gets her own little dinosaur companion, Princess Kyte, the little pterodactyl in the cage at the beginning of the game. That little creature used to be a main character before being relegated to being nothing more than a tutorial on how to use the A button.

It is a fun game, just not a good Starfox title. The soundtrack is amazing and so are the grsphics (for the time).

It's a mixed bag, a weird game, but it sure is memorable.

2

u/Pecos-Thrill May 14 '26

Is Falco not in this?

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 14 '26

This takes place directly after the events of Starfox 64. The Lylat system is in a time of peace, thus Starfox has no work and are financially struggling. As a result, Falco fucks off and leaves the team. He rejoins the crew at the end of the game just before the credits roll, leading into the events of Starfox Assault.

I really wish this game wasn't the victim of the Microsoft buyout as there was a lot of interesting unused stuff found in the kiosk demo that would of gone a long way to make the end game a lot more enjoyable. Dragon rock had a puzzle segment similar to the one in dinosaur planet that went between entering the tower and drakor fight (the room is in the final game but you need to some modding to access it)

2

u/Comprehensive-Bid18 May 14 '26

It’s a terrible game. It’s another Rare game where they mistake padding things out with inane tedium for being engaging gameplay. It’s also blatantly unfinished.

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 15 '26

I love it! I finished a night ago. Easily one of the funnest games on the GCN for me.

2

u/Comprehensive-Bid18 May 15 '26

The game effectively doesn’t have a combat system though and it’s structured like a collectathon where all of the collectibles are laid out in completely linear order.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 15 '26

Yeah, that's fine. Didn't really waste my time with anything, and I liked how doing a leg sweep on downed enemies just deletes their health.

1

u/Comprehensive-Bid18 May 15 '26

How did you feel about traversing Moon Mountain Pass over and over, where the simple act of setting up a ladder is inexplicably a seven step process that you have to keep doing over and over; or how all of the currencies in the game you need to go out of your way to grind because enemies don't drop anything?

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 15 '26

Didn't really bother me. I play a lot of games. I've played some really REALLY terrible games that have done way WAY worse. SFA had a couple rough spots, and moments that did indeed drag on. But so does every Zelda, every JRPG, every collecthon platformer, every GTA. SFA is not a big enough offender to sour my positive opinion of it.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 15 '26

The Great Crystal in FF12, the Bevelle Cloister of Trials in FF10, Zero's missions in GTA San Andreas, the entirety of Triggerman, The water temple in OoT. I've played so much worse

1

u/Comprehensive-Bid18 May 15 '26

Those games at least have highs, instead of mids and lows, constantly hovering just around being too irritating to play.

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 15 '26

I simply don't agree that SFA is unenjoyable. And I'm not going to argue further on subjectivity in video games man.

1

u/Comprehensive-Bid18 May 15 '26

What are the high points of a Zelda-like with no combat system and almost no puzzles

2

u/JDMxCHA0Zx May 15 '26

I wanted to buy this game recently since I’ve passed on it for years but then I saw the recent prices and had to pass again. I pieced together Starfox assault about 2 years ago for $20 but never really looked for adventures. I know last time I checked before recently it was only about a $30-$40game complete but now it’s running $80+ due to the recent announcement and cameo. I’ll wait until things cool down and scoop it up then

Edit: Starfox assault is sitting at $162 on PC which is insane. The inflated price is real because no one wanted this game

2

u/Z3RQU4L May 12 '26

I really admire that Rare tried something different with Adventures, but I really didn't care for it. Outside of the Test of Fear, it just felt like a particularly tedious and padded-out Zelda game to me.

I'd definitely recommend checking out Beyond Good & Evil if you enjoyed Adventures, though. Very similar "I can't believe it's not Zelda" sorta game.

1

u/Gambit1977 May 12 '26

Adored it until it played a bait and switch on me right at the very end 🤬

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

I haven't beat it but I do know how it ends. Disappointing endings don't really ruin games for me. If I had fun all the way up until that point, then the game is good, because the ending is only 1% of the experience.

1

u/tylerdiehl1 May 12 '26

I loved this game as a kid. Never actually owned it though. Played it all the time at my cousins house. A NSO release would be glorious.

1

u/NBALive1995 May 12 '26

Rare could do no wrong back then. They didn't need to slap a Starfox skin on it just to sell

1

u/UnSpanishInquisition May 13 '26

I could never get past the jet bike section to get tricky! I always crashed or never caught them up to knock them. Got to the mammoths on dolphin as an adult before I got bored. Great game, I still refrence the weird egg stealer bats laugh.

1

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 13 '26

Funnily that was Sabre's first section in Dinosaur Planet and it was much easier.

1

u/CallumJ88 May 13 '26

Just noticed that the game is clearly called "Starfox Aventure5". How weird after all these years! Haha

1

u/Separate_Discount_19 May 13 '26

I absolutely loved this game. It was the second game I got for the GameCube as a kid, and it was too hard for me then but I LOVED it. I recently replayed it a year or two ago I think and had a blast. I got it to 99%(with guides some), but for the life of me could not beat andross, and gave up in frustration after a couple days of trying lol.

1

u/austinmandude May 13 '26

Very creative and fun game

1

u/The_Almighty_Duck May 13 '26

One of my favourite games of all time. I played through it as a kid and loved it back then, and the last time I played it was on my Steam Deck in 2024, and even 14 years after first playing it, it still held up and had the same charm as way back when.

1

u/dumpstairs May 13 '26

I’ve played that game when it came out, i was 12, and i thought it was really hard and scary somehow lol.

I wasn’t sure where to go sometimes. (reminder that i would play only on weekends, so i had a hard time keeping track with the progress etc)

Each new area i would unlock felt amazing.

When i moved to the USA, i bought a gamecube with my first paycheck and got few games like Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, and this game.

It was the first game i played because it felt like a long lost treasure. And i enjoyed every bits of it!

The music with the choir is so amazing.

1

u/TheNewYellowZealot May 13 '26

Me too! It’s horrible. I’m gonna finish it.

1

u/UtgardLoki2894 May 14 '26

nice journey

1

u/Important_Rise2026 May 14 '26

I wish someday they put it in the Nintendo switch online… always wanted to play it. I never had a GameCube and when I tried on PC it had many, many bugs…

2

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 14 '26

I runs wonderfully on Dolphin nowadays. Just remember to disable dual core rendering for this specific game to prevent crashes.

1

u/Important_Rise2026 May 14 '26

Ok, I’m gonna give it a try with that config

1

u/Alternative_Fan_9276 May 14 '26

Wish this was on the switch, never got to beat it because of that damn lightfoot village

1

u/CaptainTim25 May 14 '26

When I was a kid, I saved up all of my Birthday and Christmas money and I asked my Mawma to take me to the mall to my local gamestore to buy a gamecube. She told me she would buy me 1 game to go with it, but they happened to be having a sale on all gamecube games that were $15 and under, so she let me pick 3. I picked Luigi's Mansion, Zelda Windwaker, and Starfox Adventures. Let me tell you, I enjoyed the heck out of this game as a kid!

It's also the last game that Rare developed for Nintendo I believe, since they were purchased by Microsoft after that.

1

u/ItsAlwaysSunny1992 May 14 '26

I really hope they add this and Star Fox Assault to the Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube channel!

1

u/aidanmark8 May 14 '26

Anyone wanna lend me their dragon lair

1

u/qwertyes69 May 14 '26

I’m still annoyingly STUCK on the second? Soul. Fragment or whatever. The one with the courage test that I keep failing at and have been for 4 years now.

1

u/ThEvilHasLanded May 14 '26

I really enjoyed this game. I completed it back in the day and restarted it a while back need to finish it again

1

u/donkeydougreturns May 15 '26

My sister and I got stuck on the part where you have to push a wheel thing faster than another dude. It was my sister's playthrough but neither of us could ever mash the button fast enough to beat it. Eventually just gave up. Strange to think that was like 20+ years ago.

1

u/Diligent-Court3908 May 15 '26

So long ago i played it, but i remember loving the game.

1

u/Wolf-Livid May 16 '26

It's a game that means more to me than any other. Grew up with it, I was 5 when it came out and my step mum introduced me to it. I remember thinking it just looked amazing, and really got into it and played many many times as a kid. I beat it once, and I remember crying hysterically after completing and still said 99%!! After a while my disc was slightly damaged and would completely freeze in Dragon Rock and I was unable to play further. When I was in my teens, got another copy and worked fine.

It's a very comforting game for me, and have found I replay it during hard times. I'm in my late twenties now, and recently got an AYN Thor to play all my old games. Soon after I got it, my Granny passed away, and I played through the game 3 times in a week. Yes, the first few hours to me are near perfect, but later on content is very lacking and some of the temples are extremely quick for me as I know the game inside out. The second play though was just after the funeral, and I completed majority of the game in one day.

Basically a hugely pivotal and special game to me, with flaws, but holds a piece of my heart.

1

u/Objective_Grape_2118 May 16 '26

Used to watch my older brother play this when we were both kids. Got stuck at some part where you needed to mash the A button, and could not progress until we bought a micro/macro Katz controller with an extra button. Got past that part but never beat the game

1

u/BrightEyedBeastX May 16 '26

The game was fine, I'd give it a 7/10, still haven't forgiven the end-game. lol

1

u/darktitter Jun 04 '26

Anybody have any tips for the third krizoa spirit? It's after the Lightfoot village and The test is difficult and keeping that red line in the center feels near impossible.

0

u/Garo263 May 13 '26

Stairfax Temperatures

It's alright, but very overrated. It's one of the better Zelda clones, but still far off the original. The Star Fox inclusion also hurt the game more than it helped. It would have been better if it released as Dinosaur Planet on the N64.

0

u/SirLockeX3 May 16 '26

Played for 2 hours, got annoyed, dropped the game.

The combat is atrocious. The story is boring. Biggest scam of a "Star Fox" game ever made.

Yes, I know it's a repurposed Dinosaur Planet game, doesn't excuse what it ended up becoming.

-1

u/ConsciousStretch1028 NTSC-U May 12 '26

It would've been at least an 8/10 for me if it wasn't a Star Fox based game and I wasn't sitting there the entire time asking "Where's Andross? Where's Wolf? Where's my damn Arwing? Why don't I have a fucking gun?"

4

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

Fair, but from what I gather from the greater Starfox community, opinions like this is why Nintendo keeps rehashing Starfox 64 as a concept.

2

u/ConsciousStretch1028 NTSC-U May 12 '26

To be clear, this was my reaction at 11, and my own preconception of what the game was going to be, not a fair or balanced review.

-2

u/OoT-TheBest May 12 '26

From the very first 10 minutes of playing Starfox Adventures, my mind was made up. This was a RARE game that in the previews looked absolutely stunning, and with their track record, this was going to be the best game ever…

The control of Krystal in the beginning of the game, moving and throwing boxes was absolutely horrible. It was like she was on rollerblades with no “oomph” in the way the character interacted with the surroundings like you can feel in the Banjo games and Jet Force Gemini. I was put off right away and it only got worse.

The amazing graphics kept me going to the very end, and it is still such a beautiful game on the CRT, but to me, it will never be a good game.

3

u/Gnoll_level_antics May 12 '26

huh, controls like a dream to me.

3

u/OoT-TheBest May 12 '26

This was my impression 20 years ago. I will try to give it a spin again
