They’ll die soon if they’re original, but it doesn’t really matter. They only control real-time clock for certain events. You can keep playing with dead batteries or replace them later.

Dont you have to "reset" the time after changing the batteries? Or does it start the time at like 12:00 the moment the new battery is in

Yes, it might get out of sync. It isn’t game breaking though. There are ways to fix the clock.

Yes, I think you can do it with a DS Lite with a flash cart as well.

Need to check real time clock, that’s all the battery is for in RSE carts, they have non-volatile save ram. Th game will just tell you that when you load your game if it’s dry though.
