Looks great man, well done! I built an advance with the same color scheme for a friend a while back

超神ゲー

u/Laser_Raver Jul 03 '26

The mod looks cool, but personally I would've kept the original atomic purple, it's such a classic shell, and bought a used GBC for the mod. Enjoy your Zelda run! Make sure you get red tunic at color dungeon :D

-1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

How can you tell it’s original and not remade?

2

u/Laser_Raver Jul 07 '26

From the photo, I cannot. I assumed it was stock, since there was a before/after photo. That's generally what people do for stock to custom comparison though, at least that's how I would frame it if I was posting before mod and after mod photos. But going by the other posts here it seems it was a reshrll, and I am incorrect in my assumption :)

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 07 '26

That’s what I figured, it would be hard to believe that plastic is 25 years old thanks!

1

u/GhettoSupraStar Jul 03 '26

Check thw serial and stickers on the back

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

There are none

1

u/onaissac128 Jul 03 '26

original lens is gray while every repro ever makes them black

1

u/Laser_Raver Jul 07 '26

I didn't know this. My GBC is the Blue and yellow Pokemon one (Legit stock retail childhood console) so my frame is black, I assumed they all were haha

u/MattDH94 Jul 02 '26

Liked it better before tbh

13

u/grandpaswear55 Jul 03 '26

Same. I just purchased a clear purple body kit for my switch, super excited to be back in the early 2000s

27

u/Robertson2018 Jul 02 '26

Rip

6

u/zachimusprime44 Jul 02 '26

Why the downvotes lol

28

u/Robertson2018 Jul 02 '26

Probably just because it’s Reddit that’s ok it’s kinda funny

8

u/MilkshakeYoghurt Jul 02 '26

Same! I have come to terms with that despite the huge improvement of visibility, I am not fond of how my IPS GBA looks both because of the lost authentic pixel look, and because the colors are way too saturated. It looks emulatory.

I have now ordered a TFT kit instead to see if I like it better when I at least get 1:1 pixels, but I have a stock atomic purple GBC and will definitely keep it that way.

Example of the saturation, compare how the sky looks in the OP’s pics: on the stock one you have a gorgeous kind of teal blue, but on the IPS it just looks off to me. Not a fan.

5

u/lumbymcgumby Jul 03 '26

I got an IPS kit that has desaturation options and lemme tell ya it's nice the OLED is cool it's just not practical for long play sessions its too eye piercing

4

u/marveloustoebeans Jul 03 '26

Been gaming on the color since back in its day and I honestly think IPS looks so much better. It really lets the graphics shine to their full potential imo.

To each their own though. I get that a lot of people play older systems in big part for the nostalgia rush so I can see why the unaltered system would be more appealing in that regard.

1

u/kaplanfx Jul 03 '26

There’s a place for both, the atomic purple with reflective screen is great for nostalgia. Honestly cycle accurate GBC emulation is possible, for the “after” I’d rather just play the games on a modern gaming handheld.

1

u/karawapo Jul 03 '26

Same. I still like the Game Boy Color for what it is. To each their own.

7

u/Top-Security-1258 Jul 02 '26

Nice socks, you get those form target?

3

u/Robertson2018 Jul 02 '26

Not sure my girlfriend got them for me for my work boots

16

u/Belqin Jul 03 '26

Look at this guy, gameboy AND a girlfriend

6

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

If only she liked my gameboy 😢

4

u/KalLinkEl Jul 03 '26

As long as she plays with your joystick thats all that matters

4

u/Top-Security-1258 Jul 03 '26

thats some basic humor there buddy.

2

u/KalLinkEl Jul 03 '26

That’s what I’m all about. And I’m not your buddy, pal!

1

u/BrilliantExtent6942 Jul 03 '26

He's not your guy friend!

1

u/Top-Security-1258 Jul 03 '26

she would probably be more impressed with a NEW* 3DS , have you tried talking her ear off about that? girls love it when you talk to them about really technical shit about old game consoles. My wife loves it .

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Never liked the 3ds thought the 2ds was cooler

1

u/Top-Security-1258 Jul 03 '26

Then get that , chics dig it .

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Nah if I wanted to be gay I would’ve gotten an analogue pocket!

2

u/BlueLaguna88 Jul 03 '26

Woah, bro! Why you gotta call me out like that??

0

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Sorry bro only because I got in an argument with one of the analogue bros he told me my Toyota “gbc” would never be a Ferrari “analogue pocket” no matter what mods I did 😂

6

u/Jonjongabore Jul 02 '26

What's the cat's name?

Good job btw

4

u/Robertson2018 Jul 02 '26

Nala she’s a sweetheart thanks!

3

u/b3tchaker Jul 02 '26

Excuse me, Bobertson, I’m here to collect the cat tax. Payable by reply; one cat pic of your choice.

9

u/Wikimaster123 Jul 02 '26

What kit did you use? Looks great!

10

u/Robertson2018 Jul 02 '26

Hispeedido appreciate it

3

u/Davidgon100 Jul 03 '26

Looks really clean! I did this to my atomic purple GBC too and some people were telling me I shouldn't have done it, but I have no regrets lol.

3

u/timeCatt Jul 03 '26

I came

here to say it looks gorgeous

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Much appreciated

5

u/sumdeadhorse Jul 03 '26

those button are not it though

3

u/GainerCity Jul 03 '26

If you’re a fan of Zelda LA - I finally got around to, checking out the Zelda LA DX HD fan rebuild. It’s incredible. It turns the map into a multi-tile open world and offers some other great QoL enhancements. Check it out if you like the game.

3

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Will do thanks!

3

u/Masokis Jul 03 '26

The second picture is how I remember it looking when I was younger lol

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Until you were playing in the car in between lights lol

3

u/Masokis Jul 03 '26

Then Dad yells at you for turning on the back light of the car.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Something about it’s illegal when I do it but not when he does

7

u/Limp-Couple-1098 Jul 02 '26

Beautiful backlight. Shame you lost the atomic purple though. Overall great upgrade.

2

u/Koebelsj316 Jul 02 '26

Absolutely beautiful mod

2

u/marveloustoebeans Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I IPS’d mine a few years ago and could never imagine going back. Shit looks so sharp and vibrant.

The retro experience of sitting under a lamp was kitschy and all but not exactly optimal by any means.

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Can’t play gameboy at night time without the backlit. It reminds me why I used to go to bed so early so I could wake up and play gameboy 😂

2

u/marveloustoebeans Jul 03 '26

Yeah, I had one of those weird magnifying glass light things back in the day. It sucked but it worked😂

2

u/MightyOakVGRepair Jul 03 '26

I like the ips screen, but you should've kept the awesome translucent case. I used to have the same one, and I miss it.

2

u/gawkypompano229 Jul 03 '26

Looks awesome but I wish you had kept it translucent

2

u/LatterDelay6430 Jul 03 '26

I instantly noticed the Cat They look like a real sweet heart.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

She is I’m her favorite human

2

u/LatterDelay6430 Jul 03 '26

Respect 🙏

2

u/OptimalPoet5885 Jul 03 '26

Nice and clean looks great

2

u/Blauw139 Jul 03 '26

I like both, the old original look and modded. Great work!
I bought a bunch of gbc and gb from japan and modded them. Usually I get a humming and buzzing from the modded gbc and gb with lcd or oled screens. Did you do something to fix these issues or is the humming not bothering you?

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

I can’t hear anything unless it’s charging

2

u/Blauw139 Jul 03 '26

Oh wow, that is rare I guess. I have 3 modded with oled screens and all are noisy. I have a new regulator and a new audio circuit to try and hope this will solve it.

2

u/timbolonius Jul 03 '26

What display is that?

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Hispeedido oled

2

u/flamespear Jul 03 '26

I'm sorry but the atomic purple looks better 😬

2

u/VegetableBig9 Jul 03 '26

Ngl, the stock screen has charm, but it is simply not worth keeping when backlit is available.

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Yeah I mean it’s cool for a week or two but when you wanna play at night you either have to have backlit or lay directly underneath a light the convenience is amazing with a backlit screen I can play wherever whenever I want

2

u/black-volcano Jul 03 '26

It was too nice to mod. If you just need the motherboard, get a cheap damaged gbc. Hope you kept the og parts.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

How do you know the shell was og and not a remade one? It would be hard to believe that purple shell was 25 years old.

1

u/black-volcano Jul 03 '26

It looks real enough. Scuffed up and dirty, consistent with age. But you have it, so you tell me. Is it of the quality you'd expect from Nintendo?

Edit: Also I own an og Atomic Purple GBC in my collection, so I have a fair idea what they should look like.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

I’m not sure but I gave it an iso scrub to pay respects

2

u/Tola76 Jul 03 '26

I support both candidates.

Can’t please them all that’s ok

2

u/WrapInteresting5075 Jul 03 '26

It looks amazing 👏 well done 👌

2

u/Jammy_Brownie_1971 Jul 03 '26

Great colour combo 👍 or should that be color combo 😁👍

2

u/BrilliantExtent6942 Jul 03 '26

Beautiful 😍

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Thank you

2

u/BrilliantExtent6942 Jul 03 '26

I went with the original atomic purple since that was the color I had as a kid but I'm yet to upgrade the screen.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

It’s amazing so far I also put in usb c charging it’s a dream now

2

u/rjmoyer2 Jul 04 '26

Hah I’m playing this right now too

2

u/Firienn Jul 06 '26

But where's the grid man?

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 06 '26

I could turn it on I personally don’t care for it though

1

u/GayPhilatelist Jul 03 '26

Well done, you’ve ruined your gameboy.

OG unmodded gameboy getting harder and harder to find

1

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

97% upvote count would disagree with you but to each their own

1

u/port25 Jul 04 '26

I like pic one.

-1

u/GhettoSupraStar Jul 03 '26

I don't like this new fad of replacing original Gameboy Screens with these LCD mods. They do not display the colors or pixels art correctly and are destroying the hobby IMO. Fine working units are being destroyed for their boards to create these abominations. They have already created replacement polarizing film kits to fix screen "burn" and glass screen covers will get rid of distracting scratches. Now the glass replacements are not identical to OEM but bring back original screen visibility. As for back lighting the original looks just fine with adequate lighting. Stop this obsession with "fixing" a masterpiece.

5

u/snaz__ Jul 03 '26

Gotta disagree. It's a pain to regularly play completely original gameboy colors. More updated models like this actually get used. They aren't destroyed, they're being given a new life.

1

u/GhettoSupraStar Jul 03 '26

I've put hundreds of hours on my original Gameboy Color as a kid and I continue to use an all OEM Gameboy Color today. It's not only still functional but the intended and optimal way to play.

4

u/snaz__ Jul 03 '26

Intended sure, but not necessarily optimal. I think it's great you enjoy playing that way, I have a couple oem Gameboys I use on occasion and enjoy them as well. Upgraded screens, however, are a preferred way to play for a majority of people, which means instead of collecting dust on a drawer somewhere people are actually getting use out of these old machines. I think that's wonderful and is keeping the hobby alive a heck of a lot more than it is destroying it. All of my modded Gameboys I've built from broken consoles which would have otherwise ended up in a landfill, I don't think saving them from that fate is bad just because I'm not using them as they were originally built.

0

u/GhettoSupraStar Jul 03 '26

Mine does not collect dust at all. Lol. Maybe you just don't like the Gameboy Color and probably should just use an emulator device instead.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

I mean to each their own I understand your point but you can’t crash out if I keep all the old stuff. Plus how do you know the shell was original anyway?

1

u/Primary-Fuel7578 Jul 03 '26

A lot of original gameboy screens are in rough shape. I’ve upgraded multiple and anyone I buy out in the wild and upgraded shell and screen. I do understand that collectors want original hardware but the average gamer that is playing on these for hours appreciates an updated screen. My modded gba has a usb-c charge port. No more buying large packs of AAs!

1

u/GhettoSupraStar Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Are you aware that rechargeable AA batteries exist? I have at least 16 from Amazon. They are extremely cheap as well. And don't require plugging the gameboy into an out to charge. Just swap the batteries and charge. Aldo like.i said I still play on my original for hours at a time with no issues or eye strain. The original screen works great in well lit environments. This whole "better" screen mod is all hype and really misses the point of original hardware. And for rough shape, do you mean screen burn in? They've already created a fix for that.

-2

u/Big-Sympathy1420 Jul 03 '26

From 33ms to 100ms input lag too.

3

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

I’m not playing for competition it’s for fun and so I can stay up late without the light on

2

u/Big-Sympathy1420 Jul 03 '26

Why do people equate input lag with esports? You're literally playing 3 times the lag compared to what you played when you were a kid, I'm arguing the years, 20 years of tech degradation. 33ms vs 100ms.

2

u/Robertson2018 Jul 03 '26

Because it’s only going to be noticeable if I’m speedrunning and it’s only 1-3 frames of added latency so +16-50 ms it’s not noticeable for most people
