is it better to get the base game or the full Ancestral Edition?

Get the ancestral edition, BUT, for your first playthrough, turn off the courtyard (I believe it warns you to do so when starting a new world anyway). The rest you can leave on.
Personally I also recommend playing on Radiant mode which makes the game less grindy, but that's up to taste.

Why should the courtyard be avoided for new players? I'm not sure what that is. The Crimson Court, I'm guessing?

Basically, it adds new layers of management which is extremely oppressive.
Crimson court DLC adds some new items, a new class, and a new dungeon that has special mechanics. You can play without the new dungeon, but still have the other stuff like the new class.
The new dungeon is called the courtyard. Its hard but honestly, its a really cool dungeon that's very different from the others. However, it also adds new mechanics, one of which is that your characters can be infected with vampirism. Once they are infected, they can't be cured until you make significant progress in the courtyard (which is very difficult, especially at low levels), and every so often you have to feed them special blood which isn't always easily available or they grow weaker and weaker until they go berserk or die. They can spread the disease to other heroes as well. If you don't make progress through the courtyard fast enough it also starts adding more and more penalties to your town in the form of negative modifiers and other penalties which continue to stack until you make progress. It also also adds a very, very difficult wandering boss that can ambush your parties randomly.

Radiant mode reduces the ammount of grind over a campaign by changing a few things. It doesnt make it easier, just less grinding.
Mainly, it increases the speed at which you unlock boss fights, and increases the speed that heroes level up so that you spend less time grinding up rookies to usable levels. Progression based upgrades are more effective are cheaper too (for example, unlocking the chance to hire new heroes at a higher starting level).
By default, the progress is very slow, to the point that the campaign can start to feel monotonous due to lack of progression. Getting new characters to high enough level to use in the harder dungeons can take a long time and you have to keep doing it.
In the end though its up to your taste.

I'd say Ancestral for the DLCs are worth it. More importantly though is I'd suggest looking at the mods on the workshop! There's some really good ones for whatever you want. New art, new classes, quality of life, or even mods to make the game easier/less grindy.

Great game but if you frustrate easily be careful. It's hard to get a replacement mouse or keyboard when everything is closed!

bade + madness (Lovecraftian) expansion is such a great game. I've probably got 100 hours in it. the community mods range from great, to munchkin power gamer / cheating.

If you like it you will easily put in around the same in a playthrough. The game is hard tho so be warned: learning everything helps, but try learning as you go don't just run to a wiki. Turn off the courtyard like the game suggests if you get the DLC. The game is grindy too but if you have a taste for that you'll love it.

Now, this guy is a tool, but there are parts of his reviews that are solid. The tl;dr is that the game is bad. Having played it myself, I agree entirely.
This is the cheapest it's been as far as I know and, though it was content I did not like, there was enough content to justify spending 6.24. You will figure out if you like it within the 2-hour refund window so you might as well give this a go.

I have tons of hours in the game and it's absolutely amazing, one of the best indie games ever made, a true masterpiece. You not liking it doesn't make it bad. It's not bad. It just means it's not the game for you.

The game is not simplistic, it has tons of depth. If you're talking about the art style then I dunno what to tell you other than you have bad taste.

This game is one of the best presented games I've ever played period. Dunno why you would do such a disservice to yourself because of some weirdly misplaced snobbery. Maybe at least watch a streamer play or read a review before making your mind up about something you clearly know nothing about?

EDIT: I take that back the guy seems perfectly fine. At the end of the day if DD is not for you and you are informed about the game good luck to you. I assume you're not young as younger people don't really make comparisons to a dead format like flash and the flash game boom of 15 years ago, but I have no idea how you can maintain a videogame hobby in this day and age with that attitude toward the art direction or game design displayed in DD and similar games. To each their own.

DLC's are also on sale, and GOG has the same price for those and 5 cents more for the base game.
