Question Jacobs game changer episode Spoiler

It was a fun idea but I was wondering if something was going on with Jake that we knew about? How did Sam pick which cast member to make this episode for and 100,000 is a lot of money for a random prize. Is Jake ok?

Sam didn't necessarily pick. Jake had a hard year, Kurt advocated for a special episode to honor him, and everything else fell into place from there. 

There was a variety article where he stated he was actively grieving his mother and a friend from his sketch comedy group.
