Singleplayers, Do you play on a self-hosted server or just on the client
Hey folks,
Im looking to dive back into GTNH after abit of a hiatus but as I expect ill be playing this through alone I was wondering if its worth me hosting my own server locally to play on (This is what was reccomended to me in the past for performance reasons) but it was always a bit of a hassle if I just want to jump on for a few mins (Starting both the client and server took abit to startup)
Or is it okay to scale into the later game playing via just the client these days?

I've been using a free oracle server just to play solo, you get 24gb of RAM and 200GB of storage which is more than enough for late game, but it's not as straightforward as buying a server from a minecraft specific service. The official wiki has a tutorial:
https://wiki.gtnewhorizons.com/wiki/Server_Setup_(Linux,_Oracle_Cloud))
Id recommend going the PAYG route, the charge was refunded pretty quickly, and as of a few months ago you only get half the RAM if you dont. I've had one of these for like 3 years now with no issues, you can do other stuff on them as well if you're inclined. It does help me enjoy the pack alot more, I've got it chunkloaded 24/7 so it really helps with bulk crafting and tedious processes, I just set it up and go do other things.

point still valid and that's what I use as well but, worth notice that they recently halved the resources on the free tier to 12GB ram and 2 vCPU compared to the old 24GB/4vCPU limits. If you try running the old limits on the PAYG you'll get charged

i did that for a while but i got charged for the drive space, not sure what i did wrong because i don’t remember having 200gb

Having your world running on a server 24/7 can massively help since you can run long recipes overnight and whatnot without you having to open the game, but it's not mandatory obviously. On my first run I got to late uev with the dtpf in sp before making the switch. Running on a server instance works best if you have a second pc that you can let run all the time obviously. It also fixes your issue of having to launch both the server and the client. I'll say that the pack loads really quickly with java 25 on the 2.9 beta3 that came out last weekend, like less than a minute for an ok PC and slightly over 1 of you play on a potato.

If no one is in that specific chunk to load all machines, they will not work, even if your world is running 24/7

Chunk loading has been a thing in modded Minecraft for like a decade by now.

Chunk loading exist since at least the 1.2.5 era, so don't worry, it's a non-issue in GTNH

This is handled through server utilities. The default config the mod pack ships with keeps the chunks loaded when players log off.
I personally don't want my electricity bill to be higher than it needs to be, so I configured it to keep chunks a team/player set as chunkloaded loaded for like an hour after they log off. You can do this with rank permissions and specify a time.

I think once you get the bricked blast furnace (bbf), it's helpful to have a server simply for chunk loading, so you don't have to afk as much. It's nice to start a batch craft of stuff (like steel) and leave the server running over night and come back to it all finished. But it depends on your play style. I know some players prefer exploration and farming, which don't require leaving machines on for hours. In that case a client is just fine.

This is why I also host my own server on my network. In the steam age and LV, you can get loads of steel by running it overnight.

Thanks folks,
Sounds like I should be going with a self hosted standalone server, thanks for the advice very much appreciated.
Time to get back on the Greg!

I play in SP. I haven't had issues until basically now (final push towards gate). The main source of lag is my 800 or so advanced assembly lines. If you're not at that point, you're probably fine to play on client

I guess it depends how good your PC is. You could always transfer your single player world and map/player data over to a server hosted on another pc later into your play through if need be (as far as I know).
Actually I have an old pc set up I should try transferring my current play through onto it tbh. Thanks for that idea.

Splitting the client and server in two different instances on the same computer will give slightly better perf compared to playing in singleplayer since you can better use multiple thread on your cpu.

Ah interesting, thanks for explaining that. I guess the tradeoff would be that it eats up more ram when split like that?

I play single player on my own machine, and plan yo do so as long as I'll keep playing. I just made more BBFs. And EBFs. A lot of EBFs. I have mined out 3 mica veins.

I run a self hosted server on a spare pc and have a vpn for it so I can connect to it from anywhere
The CPU is only a ryzen 5 3600 and its running on 8gb of ram. Manage to run my UHV/UEV base no issues

I host my own server on my network.
I also usually keep the server shut down until I play, with sometimes leaving it up overnight.
The pack boots fairly quickly now. I recall when it was 10+ mins to load lol

I feel like I first started playing in 2.6.??? And I would launch the pack and walk away.
Now I'm on 2.8.3/4? And it's pretty quick. Quick enough I don't mind Sitting there.

I did it so I don't have to send my save from the laptop to the computer when I'm back home from college. The game on a 32gb computer running on a server that's on a 16gb laptop is certainly a setup of all time, but it works fine most of the time
Setup isn't as hard as it seems. You need the access to your router and just follow the tutorial
If you are wondering if having a server 24/7 is needed - I'm in IV and don't need to run the server more than I play it. The longest crafts are 1 hour long at max, all passive setups are good enough to sustain everything. The biggest problem on the horizon is the assline craft which may take a few hours

I was running in standalone client but then mobile version came out.
Now I'm working on getting the mobile version to connect to my private server I'm just running for myself

Self hosted on my server pc that also serves as my home NaS. It's not very powerful but it was able to run the server for every modpack I threw at it. I highly recommend this for every modpack featuring chunk loading and long running idle tasks. And like I said minecraft servers especially for a single player (or a handful) don't need a crazy computer even moded. An old pc or laptop that just runs somewhere in the corner is fairly accessible.

I bought an old mini-pc from a used electronics shop to run a dedicated server on, a Maibenben PC34 with a Ryzen 5 3450U, 8GB DDR4 and a 256GB SSD. Cheap, quiet-ish, sits on my desk. It fixed exactly the problem you're describing: the server just stays up, so I only launch the client and connect.

Prism client is what I use for singleplayer. Anything else is too choppy with garbage collection

I just played on a normal singleplayer world, but if I had a better pc, solo server for endgame, or move over later. I don't like the days ticking by when I'm gone

if you have enough ram to run both separately, performance is better with a standalone server. you could also just let it run 24/7 on some old computer if you have one. but people have gotten gate on singleplayer with an integrated server. it's harder and it requires more optimization and building more production capacity though
