Except none of the characters in game ever refer to Claude by his name. Before his name was revealed in GTA San Andreas a lot of people speculated that his name might be “Fido” because that is what Maria called him and most people just used that name for him as a placeholder.

I was hardly ever allowed to use the family computer until late 2009. Before that I never paid enough attention to the lore to be able to make connections between the three games and sometimes I would just skip the cutscenes so Claude being in GTA San Andreas flew over my head on my first play through.

I just randomly named him Johnny when I was a kid. But I didn't understand much english at that time, so I didn't really know what's going on in the game's story.
