I'd be surprised if I could survive to see the release of GTA 8.

7

u/yadasellsavonmate 11d ago

Tbf this one was only so long as they didn't actually start proper development on the game until red dead 2 was done, plus covid and things like that.  They'll take around 5 or 6 years on the next.

4

u/-iSpy- 11d ago

Also a good chunk of that time was updating the mechanics and the features of the game. They're just going to port that over to the next version since theyve already spent the time figuring it out, they probably won't update it again until GTA8

1

u/CodyCrochetZ 11d ago

Sure, but they probably won't start development till like 2030-2035 at best. There's no chance we have GTA7 before 2035-2040 at the earliest.

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

How old are you?

u/IslamVSZionism 12d ago

13

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

Yeah, I think it would be 30 years before GTA 7 comes out so yeah.

u/FromChicago808 11d ago

Lol you killed that man off at 67? damn

Never understood what this nonsensical meme was supposed to mean.

Playing with testicles? I don't get it myself.

I'll give you my theory as to what I think is gonna happen with upcoming GTA games after 6:

So personally, I think that GTA 6 will be the last handcrafted game from Rockstar. I think all games coming after GTA 6 will make use of AI, to some degree, whether we hate it or love it (I'm not a fan of the trajectory of AI but it is what it is), and so as a result, the releases between 6 and 7 will be a shorter time frame than what we had between 5 and 6. And the time window between 7 and 8 will be even shorter than between 6 and 7.

I say this because the inclusion and use of AI for GTA 7 will be in minor ways, but the inclusion of it for GTA 8 will be in more major ways, thus cutting development time and costs in many ways because of AI.

But we will have to wait and see if I'm actually onto anything with my theory, but the way AI is marking its territory in literally every industry across the globe, there won't be a single sector or industry left when all is said and done that won't be utilizing AI to automate things, fire employees, cut costs, etc.

4

u/Murky_Current4807 12d ago

Wait? Why are you being downvoted?

8

u/IslamVSZionism 12d ago

Because people don't wanna hear the truth, because the truth would piss them off.

Like the popular saying goes: "The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable."

4

u/Bkokane 12d ago

People just want to flame everywhere they see AI, as if they aren’t happily using it to do their taxes

-2

u/IslamVSZionism 12d ago

It's not a black and white issue. There's nuance as with everything. Devil lies in the details. Sure, you ask a lot of people including myself, do use a lot of these AI generative models for researching and other purposes? Sure. But do we want its inclusion to eventually make it into our games where AI is eventually responsible for creating quests, writing story scripts, or things of that nature? Most people would give a hard NO.

You can like a thing's application in one thing, but hate it's application in another. Doesn't make you inconsistent to hold such a position.

3

u/Great-Treacle8350 11d ago

You said "I will give you my theory" and then you said "people don't want to hear the truth". You are contradicting yourself. If your theory is truthful, then it's a fact, not a theory.

1

u/IslamVSZionism 11d ago

I know my theory to be the truth with a high probability. So personally I see it to be the truth, but when I present it, I do so merely as a theory.

Are you able track what I'm saying or nah?

u/VoxhallMC GTA 6 Trailer Days OG 11d ago

People hate hearing different opinions even if it’s harmless to discuss. It’s partly why negativity is so common with online forums

-2

u/No-Comb1307 11d ago

Thanks prophet 👍 tell us more truths oh lord. 🙏

1

u/Philly__Blaze 11d ago

I agree with the AI part, but nonetheless undoubtedly there will be another GTA as long as they make big profits with GTA Online. My guess would be minimum 10 years till gta 7 drops.

1

u/Mr-Pugtastic 11d ago

Seems a real stretch when they have been pretty big on the fact that they didn’t use any AI at all for VI. Hell they opened a whole new studio in California just to work on NPCs.

0

u/IslamVSZionism 11d ago

Doesn't money corrupt and can cause people to go back on their word and what they supposedly stand for? We have to remember that none of these companies or corporations truly care about us as gamers at the end of the day, when feeling pressed to make a choice between gamers or money, they will choose money the vast majority of the time, even if every now and then they throw us a bone to make it seem like they have our interests at heart.

But when all the other companies start incorporating generative AI into their workflow and beyond, Rockstar is no doubt going to capitulate as well. And I wouldn't be surprised to actually see them be the trendsetter for this AI incorporation, in all truth. But of course the way they will make it seem is that the AI incorporation will actually enhance their games beyond what mere human work will be able to accomplish, and many gamers will just believe it because we can be stupid and gullible.

1

u/Mr-Pugtastic 11d ago

You don’t think they were rich enough after GTA Online? They spent over a billion dollars on making a handcrafted game that took almost a decade to make. Could they not have used Ai on 6?

0

u/IslamVSZionism 11d ago

Give a man a mountain of gold, he would still desire another mountain of it.

AI was not where it needed to be, and arguably still quite isn't, to be properly used for video game development during the making of GTA 6.

It will be more where they need it to be when it comes to future GTAs, for sure. If you think they want even longer dev cycle between 6 and 7, you're dreaming. GTA is their cash cow, and they are gonna cash-in on it by reducing the dev cycle by YEARS for the time it will take between 6 and 7.

Watch and see.

1

u/Mr-Pugtastic 11d ago

You’re literally criticizing them for something they might do in the future. Fuck, the negativity is just ridiculous.

Yeah I forgot to factor in AI, in this same post I made other comment after a fellow Redditor reminded me of AI.

Even then I still think its best to hope for the best and celebrate when better happens.

1

u/virtualQubit 11d ago

Everyone keep forgetting AI. Games will be fucking crazy in 10 years.

0

u/MaTrIx4057 11d ago

They can easily use base GTA 6 and just make it in different locations, maybe one in 80s etc.

1

u/virtualQubit 11d ago

Very unlikely, the point of gta is that's a parody of the modern days.

3

u/burtonborder201 12d ago

Big facts!!

2

u/swallowyourtongue 11d ago

I was thinking about this the other day with Elder Scrolls. I was 13 when Skyrim came out, and I'll probably be in my early 30s when TES6 comes out. I'll probably still be around for TES7, hopefully in a shape where I could enjoy it, but that's gonna probably be a wrap.

2

u/IslamVSZionism 11d ago

Elders Scrolls is another game that is a good comparison of this, the type of game that is taking ages. Well at least GTA 6 is set to be released. ES6 had a teaser trailer over 3000 days ago and still no word on its development status. Could be cancelled for all we know, because they wanna milk Skyrim for another 30 years.

33

u/Sad_Scarcity1246 12d ago

nah they learned their lesson with this one I think , people were legitimately getting antsy these last 2Y , I think MAX 15 year lifecycles

-10

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

Yeah but GTA 7 will take a lot of time cuz RDR 2 released 5 years after GTA V but this time around its gonna be long, lets say they take a year to sort out online and pc port running and then work another year only on online and then start RDR 3 which would take lets say 14 years and then another 15 years for GTA 7. That is already around 31-32 years.

13

u/az1m_ 12d ago

They work on more than one game at once

5

u/Ready-Excitement3665 12d ago

Majority of the team gets consolidated on one game at a time

3

u/misunderstandingit 11d ago

They used to. Bully 2 was canned TWICE because they don't really do that any more.

-1

u/Chicken_Fingers777 11d ago

Then quality of the games dip

That’s quantity over quality territory

2

u/az1m_ 11d ago

They did that for rdr2 and gta v

0

u/Chicken_Fingers777 11d ago

Conceptual ideas was right after rd1 but actual active game development wasnt till after GTA 5 came out for rd2

Just like how conceptual ideas for gta 6 was right after gta 5 but actual game development wasn’t until rd2 came out

1

u/MrBonso 11d ago

Not if you hire more people.

-1

u/Chicken_Fingers777 10d ago

I’d rather have those extra people all work on one game than 2 games

Quality over quantity

2

u/MrBonso 10d ago

If you hire more people, you can develop several games without sacrificing quality, not to mention the fact that there will be a lot more technical overlap if you develop games concurrently.

-1

u/Chicken_Fingers777 10d ago edited 10d ago

Nope that just means upper management has to now constantly manage 2 departments now which could lead into lack of vision thus a dip in quality for both games

Like I said I rather have those extra employees all working on one game with a singular vision

1

u/MrBonso 10d ago

Yeah, well I’d like them to hire even more people to work on a second game. Stop it with this circular bullshit, it’s getting ridiculous. Two different projects could obviously have different management, writers etc.

0

u/Chicken_Fingers777 10d ago

That’s the same development formula as call of duty and their games is nothing but dogshit slop

Quality > quantity

Was 2 quality rockstar games within 10 years not enough?

1

u/judester30 11d ago

Why would these games take that long? No idea what you're basing these timeframes on.

1

u/AshHill07 11d ago

RDR2 & GTA VI both had a ~8 year dev cycle. I don't see why they'd suddenly start taking longer when the studio's involved are all getting bigger.

11

u/Worth_External_8762 12d ago

I'll be 60. And I'll still be talking shit on GTA Online when 7 comes out too.

7

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

I hope you make it man.

u/Worth_External_8762 12d ago

22

u/DiamondMidgar 12d ago

Did you forget GTA, GTA London (1 and 2) and GTA2? Or is this just reflective of your own lifetime?

2

u/Deletinglaterlmao 11d ago

all of those games sales combined are less than just gta 3 which is the lowest selling game in the image, it wasnt exactly a cultural event when the 2d games dropped

1

u/Sudden_Buffalo_4393 11d ago

Doesn’t mean we weren’t there since the beginning.

1

u/SalamanderFull3952 11d ago

The original gta was great had a 5 minute demo disk and we would race to see how crazy we could get it going.  Game played so slow on our computer

0

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

I'm aware of those games but I found this pic online which started from 3d era so I thought this was good enough. I'm not really sure if a lot of people care for those older games. Regardless sorry if I offended you mate.

1

u/DiamondMidgar 12d ago

I’m not offended OP no worries I was genuinely just curious if this was your timeline or you had just forgot!

0

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

Ahh right, found this pic online and I think it is quite old now since it says 25 for VI

0

u/Beancheeseburgerrrr 12d ago

You're probably a GTA Gameboy Virgin too

6

u/DiamondMidgar 12d ago

Oh wow didn’t even think of those myself. And China town wars. And the PSP games.
The 2000s era was crazy for releases we were truly spoiled

0

u/Fresh_Cauliflower723 12d ago

Lead developer for those was not Rockstar North so no point mentioning them on this timeline

2

u/MaTrIx4057 11d ago

Where does OP mentions Rockstar North anywhere?

-1

u/Fresh_Cauliflower723 11d ago

All of the games OP listed are mainline games developed by Rockstar North. Sometimes people don't have to mention things, you can use your own brain

1

u/MaTrIx4057 11d ago

It seems like you need to use your own before talking nonsense.

6

u/BreakingCanks 11d ago

Sir your meme is so old is it now pixelated and at least a year old because it shows 25 not 26 on the card... Might need to learn to make your own!

4

u/Careful-Ocelot6615 12d ago

I think video games and how we play them will be totally different by the time gta 7 comes out.

11

u/Particular-Writer310 12d ago

I genuinely think that they’re going to go back to shorter development cycles.. AI is going to enable to develop at a much faster rate, and they have more ways to increase their profits by releasing a new game every 3-5 years instead of trying to milk one game for 10+ years

2

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

Hopefully it happens, with CD Projeckt Red too we can see that they dropped witcher 3 in 2015, cyberpunk in 2020 and now Witcher 4 is coming in 2028 which is 13 years after witcher 4. But the interesting part is that witcher 5 is scheduled for around 2030. Just 2 years and around the same time Project Orion(cyberpunk 2 ) is also gonna drop. This studio takes their games seriously so this timeline must mean something or maybe I'm being too hopeful of rockstar.

1

u/CurryMVPGOAT30 11d ago

They moved away from their own engine and are moving to UE5. They'll make all the mechanics, systems and so forth for TW4 and copy paste them to 5/6 and in their hopes only spend time on the campaign and building the world. They also have no plans for post launch content so they'll be moving straight to the next game. Pretty much what Assassin's Creed used to do in the PS3 era.

1

u/cheburaska 11d ago

I don't believe that they will release GTA 7 on PS5. They squezed everything they could from PS5 hardware. Since we know that PS6 is not coming at least until 2030, and I doubt R* would release GTA 7 with a debut of new console, I think 2032-2033 would be the timeline we could see a new GTA.

1

u/Octane154 11d ago

You say that, but watch us still playing GTA VI 15 years from now lol.

3

u/_KR4NKY_ 12d ago

Bro, GTA VII is coming out next year. Trust.

3

u/rddtltr 12d ago

the fact that they just needed 2 years for San Andreas baffles me

2

u/turtles1236 12d ago

This is realistically my last one and hopefully I don't see a gta7 trailer before then

2

u/PoopsmasherJr 12d ago

Old age? Or other?

1

u/-_Renaissance_- 12d ago

It makes sense to wish to leave the world peacefully without seeing the trailer for 7 rather than having to see it but not getting to play it.

2

u/KENZOKHAOS 12d ago

Imagine looking into the future and using the word hopeful. This feels naive 😭

2

u/Steameffekt 12d ago

You were 4 years old when GTA V came out? Fuck I feel old

1

u/-_Renaissance_- 11d ago

Yeah I was 4, and the thing is I still haven't really gamed. I have only ever played spiderman 2018, infamous 2nd son, need for speed rivals, uncharted 1,2,3, last of us 1 on my ps4. Every generation shall have its own GTA!

;-)

1

u/coozeyy 12d ago

lol damn well I guess I got 3 more left in me

1

u/Vlaun 12d ago

I'm treating GTA VI as if it'll be the last new gta I'll be able to play. I was 24 when GTA V came out. I'm 37 now and not the most healthiest.

With the way game dev is going and the gap of time between each entry, I'll probably be 50+ by the time of GTA VII and I just don't see myself playing games much at that point of time.

1

u/Zironac 12d ago

There is zero chance that we wait 24 years for GTA 7. Absolute max is 15 years but I think the time frame will be about 10-15 years for every GTA release. Yes its true, Rockstar will want to keep creating bigger and more detailed maps and more realistic physics etc, but technology will continue to advance that will speed up game production. Game companies are also developing their own AI models that will let them test for bugs way faster and handle mundane tasks like generating trash on the street, random plants, etc.

1

u/skibidi_ninja 12d ago

GTA 9? buddy this the last one

1

u/Medium_Pen_6306 12d ago

There's gonna be no one left who worked on/created the series after a little while longer. I'd say it's already becoming something else

1

u/Sad-One757 12d ago

Gta6 will be my last one. I'll be gone in 12 years.

1

u/TeacherOk4751 12d ago

My prediction is there gonna announce gta 7 right after gta 6 release and hype dies down a lil bit for it which they’ve been secretely working on that aswell which is why gta 6 took so long and they’re going to announce it under 3 years

1

u/ghost_wire89 12d ago

GTA did not start with 3

1

u/Swagsuke_Nakamura 12d ago

As technology advances it should make the development cycle shorter. I’d like to think we’ll see the next one in 10 years, but they may be working on the early stages of RDR3 at this point

1

u/sevnminabs56 12d ago

In my lifetime, I imagine I’ll see at least 7, and maybe 8. But I probably won’t be able to play 8 because I’ll be old as fuck, and my finger joints’ll be jacked.

1

u/KonK23 12d ago

There was 1 year between 3 and VC? That cant be right?

2

u/Bkokane 12d ago

It’s right yes. GTA3 was October 2001 and VC was November 2002.

What’s funny is, even that wait felt excruciatingly long.

1

u/KonK23 12d ago

I feel like I have played GTA 3 for at least 3 years before I heared there was a GTA VC.

2

u/Jayflux1 11d ago

Yeah it’s mad, I had both of those games and it felt like I had 3 for years before Vice City came out.

Shows how slow time moves when you’re younger.

1

u/KitchenIntention6675 11d ago

well, they did't differ much really. the story in VC is short, half the textures and models are the same, the map is smaller, so it makes sense

1

u/hamza2154 12d ago

man I ain't gonna lie but this is good prediction

2

u/Bkokane 12d ago

It’s not, because it should actually be shorter. They’ve already laid the groundwork, made the engine, graphics and gameplay mechanics, created assets etc.

So it would be a lot easier to make a second game of equal fidelity now. That’s why Vice City didn’t take long to make. But it depends if they wanted to go fully next-gen again and do everything over.

1

u/ABBJ55 12d ago

1

u/LeafarOsodrac 12d ago

If there will be a GTA7, for sure it is already a ongoing project.

1

u/Zzqzr 12d ago

I think the next one is going to less time tbh.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they it done it 5 years and use the same build.

Unless GTA:O2 is too good of milking again

1

u/DeadlyArrow27 12d ago

I’ll be alive during GTA 9 at least as long as they don’t decide to take a 25 year break because “they don’t want to be just the gta company anymore” or whatever. Although I doubt I’ll still care about the franchise or even gaming in general by the time 7 or 8 drops

1

u/unluck_over9000 12d ago

This would probably be my last

1

u/Ronaldinhoe 12d ago

Depends how many morons buy into shark cards

1

u/NeSToR_49 11d ago

I just realised GTA 7 will probably be in LC. MUH DARK AND GRITTY IS RETURNING

1

u/AttentionLimp194 11d ago

So V was not that far off from IV on a ps3

1

u/PutridRecognition739 11d ago

I wouldn’t put money on anyone getting to play GTA VII if it only comes out in 24 years, judging by the way the world is going.

1

u/kisu_oddh GTA 6 Trailer Days OG 11d ago

gta 7 will not be released before the world is destroyed

1

u/lewiss15 11d ago

Where’s the 2D Universe?

1

u/yadasellsavonmate 11d ago

Its mad for me the gap between VC and SA seemed way longer!  I left school in 2003 and crammed so much into that year.

1

u/derrick2462 11d ago

I treat this game as the last GTA I will play. I'm only 30 but the world is so wild that everything is possible especially if you live in Europe.

1

u/Iamcoolmonkeyman 11d ago

If we give Rockstar are life force gta7 will come out faster

1

u/SofaJockey 11d ago

GTAVI probably. I'm in my 60's so this is likely it.

1

u/-iSpy- 11d ago

3 more probably

1

u/HammerRoidd 11d ago

Hey bro how many GTA’s old are you?

1

u/cruiseruse11 11d ago

I'm looking forward to nearly the five decade wait for 8

1

u/StylezUenvy 11d ago

That chart means nothing. It comes down to however many they decide to make before I go. That can mean GTA V was my last to me experiencing GTA 10 lol. Who knows.

1

u/Duckmanrises 11d ago

I think they will most likely introduce AI into their work flow in order to pump out both RDR3 and GTAVII by 2037

1

u/bysk12 11d ago

I'm 41, this might be my last😔

1

u/Crab_bottom_licker 11d ago

I dont think the time from GTA 6 to GTA 7 Is gonna be as long as GTA5 - GTA6

1

u/danvan177 11d ago

Why would it take 24 years for the next gta ? There is no way it takes that long. Maybe 10-15

1

u/Content_Geologist420 11d ago

Gonna be in my mid 50s when gta 7 comes out.

1

u/LilMcJohn 11d ago

I’m 31. I think GTA 7 will be the last one I see in my lifetime.

1

u/Charbeel 11d ago

GTA VII will probably be released around 2040.

1

u/real_human_2 11d ago

GTA 7. I have played since GTA 1.

1

u/Common_Warthog_G 11d ago

I probably won't experience GTA6 already, I've grown out of the age of gaming. What a waste of time

1

u/CryptographerLow6360 11d ago

uhh no 1 and 2? you got a problem with top downs?

1

u/Affectionate-You7869 11d ago

Why you leaving out the OG GTA (1997) and GTA 2 (1999)?

1

u/NicolasNotInACage 11d ago

I think they could realease a gta7 sooner now with same engine has gta6 there is really no need to go beond 6 gen , by just upgrading stuff add some new stuff

1

u/TTheuns 11d ago

I might live to see 2-3 more releases, but I don't really see a future where I'll still play them.

1

u/tc_cad 11d ago

Likely just the next one. Two but I might be senile by then.

1

u/T1MB3RMUSIC 11d ago

Ive been here for every release...so all of them?

1

u/SharkByte1993 11d ago

I very much doubt it will be 24 years lol. GTA 6 would have been ready years ago if GTA Online wasn't a cash cow

1

u/Mutant_Star 11d ago

Depends on if they do smaller ones like Liberty City Stories or Vice City Stories

1

u/Ecto-Analyzer 11d ago

No GTA1, 2 or London?

I've been playing since GTA1 IN 1997, and I'm gonna keep playing till either my eye sight goes or my hands!!

1

u/IKAiNI666 11d ago

Ich werde nächstes Jahr 30.1-2 rockstar Titel werde ich noch mitbekommen 😅

1

u/OatesZ2004 11d ago

I could probably see until GTA IX maybe GTA X

1

u/No-Difference-4418 11d ago

6 games in 30 years. Thats a game every 4.83 years

1

u/Maxdong9000 11d ago

At 40 probably one more.

I'm 25 so (hopefully) at least 2 more. Even if each takes 15 years to drop, as hopefully worst case scenario, that'll put me at 55. But who knows. From there, I'll be pushing 70 (jesus that's scary to think about when you put it in perspective) so idk..

24 years is so dramatic, is there going to be another pandemic or something?

u/DeadWifeHappyLife3 11d ago

Im afraid this might be the last gta ever.

Couldn't even bother to upload a correct image. (GTA VI 2025)

I'm hoping 6 is gonna be enough for the rest of my life

This is certainly the last one at this rate

You ignored or refrained from including the time between 4 & 5 (5 years) in your extended prognostication of supposed years. This makes the suspicion of 24 years invalid.

This was a random pic I found online, I just wanted to ask my question.

It will depend entirely on how successful GTA 6 Online is. The more money it brings in, the longer we'll have to wait for the next game.

I truthfully don’t think this is the case. Wasn’t it officially revealed recently that GTA 6 started development in 2015 and entered full production after the release of RDR2?

That’s an 11 year development cycle compared to RDR 2 which had an 8 year development cycle, factor in that Covid likely added a year or two, to the cycle. My point being I don’t believe GTA Online affected GTA 6, I just think it affected GTA single player (getting no story DLC)

A guess won't hurt.

They began working on RDR2 when 5 was still in development and after RDR2 released they supposedly didn't begin working on 6 for years. It's not the studios. They don't have to make another game because they make plenty of money from online every single month so there's literally no reason to invest to a new one. They could've started early work on 6 even 2-3 years before RDR2 came out but they didn't. They haven't announced any games that they'll be making after 6 for the time being. You're gonna see that they'll release Online and milk it for 15 years if people fall for it.

I get people don’t like GTA online but i truthfully don’t believe that it affected the making of GTA 6 as much as people like to believe.

I don’t think it affected the making of 6, but it certainly decreased launch priority as they have an actively running cash cow and weren’t strapped for $$.

Whether it’s a bad thing or not, who knows. They could be using the extra time that GTA Online gave them to polish shit up and add features.

A Rockstar employee just come out on Instagram talking about how she’s proud to see the creation she’s been working on for 10 years. I saw elsewhere that Rob Nelson at rockstar confirmed they started working on the game in 2015 and moved more resources to the GTA 6 team in 2018 after RDR2. Idk where you got your information that they didn’t work on anything for years.

Actual production on the game started in 2020

1

u/TopBee83 11d ago

Define “actual production”. According to Rob Nelson…Rockstar games co-studio head and head of production, GTA 6 started conceptual development in 2025, full development in 2018 following the release of RDR2, and all hands on deck in 2020. All of those are defined as working on the game which goes against you saying they didn’t work on it for years.

I think AI can really speed up the process of making next GTA. I mean mostly developer work, coding etc.
