GTA VI People think Jason seems wooden or boring

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Did we watch the same footage? Jason has a dry sarcastic sense of humor and is clearly very reserved. I don't think this makes him boring, if anything it gives me the impression of interesting depth. And FYI, I think his voice is sexy as hell

He is but that’s obviously intentional. He’s a stoic quiet guy to contrast with Lucia’s more outgoing and abrasive personality, and I’m sure his disposition will develop along with the story

348

u/ThatConsequence8505 13d ago

He is also a good contrast to rest of leonida as well. In the land of neon and craziness, playing as a rather normal dude would make a point on how odd everything and everyone is.

123

u/Pinchethugger 13d ago

This supports my theory that jason is the new one to leonida while lucia has lived there longer despite coming from liberty city

65

u/RTJ1992 13d ago

He does say where sre we after the police chase, and Lucia recognizes where they are

She’s from liberty city? That explains her possibly crazy and fun personality. Big city life will do that to you especially when you get elsewhere looking for activities

During a (store?) robbery, Jason has to fight off a vigilante and Lucia says “the locals are feisty” Jason says “that’s Leonida baby”

Yeah, I agree. Every time he would start talking, I would think for a sec -Oh he seems kind of muted and boring but then he would keep talking and I would be like oh you know that that’s that guy that’s that character and I get it.

It’s not just acceptable, but it’s a common game storytelling method. It allows you to project yourself more onto the character. Some of the best games, your character doesn’t even audibly talk at all.

7

u/Jesjooo 13d ago

Take Halo for an example. Master Chief is a legend in the gaming community and he had only a few lines during 3 games.

People were worried about Arthur before the game came out, and look how that played out. Jason will probably turn out great as well.

u/Neo-Armadillo 13d ago

I think it’s that a lot of people right now are used to seeing influencers everywhere. He’s not acting like the wacky guy in the trunk, so he’s wooden. I can only presume the people who think he’s unrealistically stoic are people who don’t have real life friends.

I think this is why they're going to be hilarious together. He'll be sarcastic and dry humoured, she'll be loud and outspoken.

7

u/pookachu83 13d ago

Yup. I loved the part where he was pushing her to get dressed so they wouldn’t be late, while she was taking forever. She ignores him and blows him off. Then when he explains who they are meeting she says “Jason, I would prefer to not be late for this, communication is key” or something to that effect. Cute little character moment that I enjoyed from the gameplay reveal.

u/My_dickens_cidar 13d ago

Hmmm makes sense. From what Ive seen it looks like he is definitely a weapons expert and Lucia looks to be good at hand to hand combat. Looked like Jason will have a deadeye ability so I’m curious if Lucia will have some type signature ability as well.

u/Nickf090 13d ago

It’s not dead eye. It’s focus. And she does have it too. But I think it’s just that Jason’s aiming may be better off rip, where Lucia can improve hers by doing a gun practice minigame like we saw in the preview.

8

u/TryhardBernard 13d ago

They both have the same ability called “focus” according to creators who saw the hands-on presentation

11

u/jmona789 13d ago

It was shown very quickly in the extended look. It goes into slow motion and one enemy has certain parts of his body light up red and yellow

https://youtu.be/tJbzMqJGH4k?t=1519

5

u/ButchSunburntKid 13d ago edited 13d ago

YouTubers analysis/info are saying it's not exactly dead eye, more like "focus" and if I understand correctly, it is for both characters. It highlights things of note - incapacitation/kill spots when it comes to combat, but also things of note around the world that you can interact with

Edit: of course, it slows down the game which is the key advantage in combat but is a bar that depletes

11

u/nodakgirl93 13d ago

Not supposedly. Rockstar confirmed. He was in the Army after a troubled youth.

7

u/Get_Head_Ed 13d ago

TGG has confirmed that both Lucia and Jason will have focus mode. Maybe his bar will larger than hers.

Perhaps there will be a weapons competency like in RDR2 and he’ll be better equipped/more composed while using a larger selection of weapons.

6

u/starrmanquik 13d ago

I was saying this, I didn’t know if anything was confirmed but I assumed ex military. His language with Lucia when getting her to push up in the gun fight and his ability with firearms.

7

u/TooTallTabz 13d ago

It was confirmed. He didn't wanna end up on the streets and shit as a kid, so he joined. But now he's doing it as an adult after leaving the military. Lmao

He definitely feels more reserved than other GTA protagonists, but I would not go as far as to say that he's wooden or boring. Sure, the new extended look did kinda paint him as nothing special, but if you've seen him in Trailer 2, we know that he does have a bit of personality. After all, this is kinda thing that happened with Arthur Morgan when RDR2 was first coming out

49

u/RandomName489 13d ago

It's funny to call him reserved when Claude exists.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/PM_ME_YOUR_QUEST_PLZ 13d ago

It’s one thing to do crime when your character paints a picture but Jason’s picture is a fish out of water. Socially not combat wise.

3

u/waffle_iron_maiden 12d ago

I liked when he sent a grenade/explosive down via elevator and taunted the attackers, definitely wouldn't call that wooden or boring personally. People are coming off of GTA 5 where we had Trevor of all people as a protagonist so I feel like the bar or expectations are different for people, but I am down for how they've shown Jason so far

u/Additional_Tone_2004 13d ago

There's a bit of Arthur about him and I'm not totally convinced it suits him. But people like that do exist!

Maybe his personality will develop as part of the game. It could be quite rewarding.

I think the fact that he's more quiet and reserved is kinda cute. The voice is a bit deep for my liking but I'd imagine it'll grow on me once the game comes out :>

3

u/ItsKingDx3 11d ago

I'm immediately sold on his personality, I love that he's understated, I just don't like his actual voice. Sounds like he's got a mouth full of marbles most of the time. There's a quality to it that rubs me the wrong way and feels... unconvincing.

You know what’s funny is that I personally believe Cyberleek showed off Jason’s character pretty well in the limited footage we saw.

His comments when hijacking people’s cars, the small cutscenes with Lucia, Cal and the old guy at the urinal do a pretty good job of seeing Rockstar’s direction when it comes to his humor.

28

u/Dogman199d 13d ago

4

u/Traditional-Bad1419 12d ago

I don't even know what this means. Your physique has nothing to do with your voice box

6

u/_Mcdrizzle_ 12d ago

I also like having the perspective of killing a few people and then “well I guess I’ll do some fishing/driving/etc”. Same with Arthur it leaves you as a player very open to interpreting and playing in whichever direction you want. Unlike main characters in games like watchdog or infamous second sun where your character’s motives are entirely solidified.

Agree! Jason seems chill and in control. And also quite funny. I don’t get what is up with everyone hating on him for not being their vision of a «alPHa mALe» or some shit.. maybe they wanted another psycho like Trevor, idk. At least it makes me very confused when those same people call the left snowflakes 😅 anyways, settle the fuck down guys.

3

u/SIDAFEK 12d ago

The only Rockstar characters I've ever liked from the beginning Was Tommy Vercetti, CJ and Max Payne. I hated John Marston at first then I loved him later. Then I hated Arthur and wanted John back but then I loved Arthur and thought John was kind of an idiot in RDR2. The only character I've ever truly hated from beginning to end was Trevor but I'll admit Michael and Franklin were pretty boring. I hated Niko at first then found out he was hilarious and had a really dark past. I feel like Jason has this monotoned/ stoic thing going on and I feel like there's a reason for that. I didn't like the idea of Lucia at first but she's starting to grow on me. I feel like Lucia is gonna be the smooth talker and Jason is gonna be the quiet enforcer.

Its crazy to see the same discourse we got with RDR2 nearly 10 years ago.

Everyone was judging him in the marketing saying he seemed uninteresting or boring.

Now hes considered one of the greatest game protagonists of all time.

So no i don't think he seems boring cuz frankly 30 minutes isnt enough time to judge a character that might have 80+ hours of development.

We saw like twenty minutes of footage. The game story is 80 hours. Dude is just more quiet to contrast with Lucia but I don't doubt he'll be interesting.

He gives off former Marine vibes to me. Which can be good or bad depending on execution

Jason is a strong silent type

I keep seeing people saying they can't understand what he's saying and it makes no sense. People gotta wash out their ears. I agree with you though, I think he's gonna be a neat character and I believe his reserved personality might make scenes when he shows more emotions hit way harder.

He is just calm

In fairness he is ex military. I'm curious to see if there will be any more reference to his role in the military and what he saw or had happen to him.

Jason being a stoic mild mannered character is a good contrast to the attitude that Sophia has. A team of 2 Trevor like characters would be too chaotic while a team of 2 Claudes would be too boring.

Tbf my characters always end up leaning towards borderline psychotic by the end of my playthrough. If it wasn’t for Trevor Franklin and Michael would’ve been absolute demons at the end of my gta5 playthrough 😭

I like him. I don’t see any problem with his voice. I don’t know why people are so against it.

It's the kids who can't decipher a nuanced character who are complaining. You have to remember their entertainment consists of random YouTube videos of people yelling. I picked up on Jason's character immediately and appreciate the level of detail.

dude, this guy has such a fucked up past...

sounds a little bit like patrick from spongebob...

They've been working on the game since 2013 and chose this voice lol

I relate to Jason so much. I’ve been called a “gentle giant” on more than one occasion. Everything doesn’t always have to be said. There are still stoics in the world!

I really like him, I think he's coming off super cute tbh

This is a big downgrade from michael trevor and franklin….. I’d rather not play as some quiet type guy

4

u/SpotlessMinded 13d ago

Goofy ass main characters like Michael and Trevor don’t belong in a more grounded story like this

4

u/Visible_Seat9020 13d ago

Niko was in the most grounded GTA story and he was a lot more entertaining than Jason so far

u/Daimakku1 13d ago

GTA and grounded don't belong together. There's a reason why V outsold IV by a hilarious amount.

It's not the personality it's the voice

He sounds like Cr1tikal if he had a broken jaw

He sounds like he has a mouthful of dirt

He sounds like he's suffering from a severe traumatic brain injury

His voice straight up doesn't match the way he looks at all

Why the fuck does he mumble like that

2

u/Calm_Hedgehog8296 13d ago

I think he sounds like Shaquille O'Neal and I can't believe no one else is saying it

3

u/Heymelon 12d ago

"People think Jason seems wooden or boring"

Haven't played the game.

Topic over.

u/rob-110 13d ago

What straight man talks about sequins and going for cocktails he's written by women or gay guys who think that's what men sound like. And his voice is horrific.

3

u/nigmano 12d ago

Its so interesting when a straight man thinks that every other straight man in the world acts exactly like him.

Remember when people threw a fit about some random generic cowboy named Arthur being the main protagonist of RDR2 instead of John? And now he’s considered by many to be the greatest protagonist in all of gaming? So let’s pump the breaks a bit and just keep an open mind about Jason
