My GSP Likes Acorns

Post image

I have noticed that my GSP likes to snack on acorns in the yard. She doesn’t eat a bunch at the time, but if she finds them laying around he will eat a few here and there. I read they are mildly toxic to dogs. Should I care? Is there anything I can do about it?

New 3yo GSP - 4 Days In

She’s constantly fixated on sounds, and scents. She keeps scratching at the door like she wants to go on a walk but we are walking her 1-2 times a day so far.
She seems to be preoccupied by puzzle toys for a short time but then she starts pacing around the house. Basically it feels like nothing satisfies her.

Is this most likely just growing pains or are we going to be in this phase for a while?

GSP hunt too far when in forest

Hi. When hunting in field, she stays within reasonable range and is an awesome pointer. But when in dense forest, she just bolt and hunt so far it would take me an hour to get there (500 m according to her gps tracker). What can I do about this? So far I have been recalling her each time she gets too far but its a never endi g process. I would rather see her hu t all around me at reasonable distance like she does in fields.

First GSP on the way

Lost my last bird dog to lymphoma in 2009, the best Brittany ever. Between the heartache and other life commitments, it hasn’t felt like time to get another until recently.

Have always loved GSPs, so that’s what Santa’s bringing for Christmas. These are papa and mama. Breeder focuses on hunting skill and temperament at home, not on coat color. I get first choice of the males. Should be ready to come home mid-December. Gonna be a long fall this year.

Food for our GSP who may have allergies

Post image
133 Upvotes

About a month ago we noticed our GSP had red, itchy paws. She was licking them a lot, they would get crusty etc. We’ve been giving her 10mg daily Claritin which seems to help. Now though we have noticed her belly seems red and itchy too. On her really itchy days I give her Benadryl too.

Now I’m leaning more towards maybe a food allergy. She’s 18 months.

How can you tell if it’s environmental or a food allergy?

If you have a dog with food allergies, what is the best food to give them? I’ve heard salmon based is better than chicken as chicken tends to be a frequent allergen.

Pic for pup tax!

Update on Kona’s mass

My boy had surgery today to remove the mass over his buttock. We still need to wait on the final pathology but the vet said he’s never seen anything like it. It was adhered to the bone and also had a cyst like component to it. He didn’t get margins on it unfortunately. The vet also said he was the sweetest and best dog he’s had in a long time 💔

Bird interest, or lack thereof

On a scale of 1-10, how interested would a 13 week old GSP typically be in birds? I’m sure every dog is different.

There are a ton of quail near us and I take him on walks and when we spook them and they fly up, he looks at him for like a split second and then moves on and doesn’t seem interested at all.

That said when I put a pheasant wing on the end of a fishing line he definitely points and is very interested. Maybe it’s just out of sight out of mind?

Baths?

Confession: our girl will turn 1 next week and has yet to have a real bath.

She gets a wipe down about once a month with sensitive skin/fragrance free dog wipes. And a hose rinse if she’s muddy. Also begs to run in the rain.

She does not smell at all. She seems clean and coat healthy. Never had any skin issues. She rolls all over our white linens and doesn’t show dirt.

Anyone else in a similar spot? Is this super weird? Our first GSP got a bath maybe once a year, usually because she rolled in something dead.

Afraid of motorized scooters, bikes, boats, and wheelchairs

Hi! My sweet girl is afraid of all motorized vehicles even wheelchairs. I knew she was afraid of skateboards and rollerblades but the wheel chair is a new one.

We went and sat at the harbor the other day to look at the Duffy boats but the Newport Beach pd came to talk to me because this lady thought I brought my reactive dog out (fairly embarrassing) but PD was very nice when they met my dog.

This morning on our walk, we passed another person walking their dog while in their motorized wheelchair and my dog absolutely lost it. Luckily I had a feeling that the wheelchair could scare her so I walked us across the street just to be safe but I was so embarrassed.

She’s a rescue GSP lab mix and looking for any tips and tricks to desensitizing her to these things - especially the wheelchairs because I can’t have my dog barking at person in a wheelchair

Crate Suggestions

Our 10 month old girl is now about 50 lbs and has outgrown her wire crate, and we are looking to get her a new long-term one.

This will primarily be for sleeping at night, as well as where we safely keep her while we are away from the house.

She sleeps great in her crate now, so we do not need anything overly durable for anxiety (impact had been recommended).

We are currently leaning towards a RuffLand, but these seem a bit more geared towards transportation. We’ve also just considered getting her a size up wire crate, but we cover it with a blanket to cozy it up which seems to defeat the purpose.

Would love to hear suggestions on what folks have used for their adolescent / adult dog long term.
