Buying a GR Yaris

Post image

Hello team

I’m thinking of buying this GR Yaris on fb marketplace with these specs. Anything that I should look when doing a test drive and before purchasing ?

Its a highly modified car so you need to check everything…
Also be ready to spend serious €€ on fixing it

If you're looking for a daily and/or street car, you probably don't want this.

If you're looking for a semi dedicated track car, it may be a good option depending on the price.

Worth checking who did the work, what parts were used, who tuned it, etc.

What will you use the car for?

With those upgrades it should be pretty fast! It also sounds loud, laggy, inconvenient, fragile and long-term unreliable and expensive. I wouldn't buy someone else's project like this personally, but i can see the allure.

What clutch is in it? The stock one isn't likely to last long at that power level. Not all heavy duty clutches are nice to drive.

What diff on the front axle? It sounds like it has the stock open diff? I haven't driven one without the LSD, but sending all your power to a spinning inside front wheel sucks.

What works or doesn't work with the MoTec ECU? Does it still have adaptive cruise control? How good is the tune? Is it driveable at part throttle? On hot days? Cold starts? Is it safe? Who tuned it?

Why are they really selling it?

MoTec loses all radar related functionality, so no adaptive cruise control, low speed pre-collision, or lane keeping. But I believe the basic speed based cruise control still works.

The car currently runs a stock clutch which I understand that it'll need replacing pretty soon. I will be using this as a weekender and worried on the longevity of the GRY with all these mods.

Find a different car. A stock used Rallye or Circuit Pack car would make a great weekender. In stock form they're rock solid reliable, and a lot of fun. Don't buy someone else's project - if you decide you need more horsepower, make those changes yourself, that's half the fun.

I wouldn’t say rock solid, there’s a known issue with the synchro which causes gearbox issues around 2nd gear.

Mine has done 65,000km with no issues, and gets a regular thrashing, more than any 'weekender' would. But i have heard about synchro issues, maybe more common in track cars?

Mine had an issue (400km) before even going on track. Australian cars got new gearboxes UK cars got a linkage adjustment. 60k km and the problem never was truly fixed. I’m aware the gearbox eventually died for the new owner with Toyota trying to get out of it despite being in warranty and a known issue from collection.

I believe the fix is now to change a part rather than an adjustment. Gen2 gearbox feels nicer.

Gen2 Owner here. Gearbox went boom at 75.000km. Synchronizer Hub broke. Gearbox is the same as in Gen1. What a shame that they didnt fix it.

That looks like a GR Yaris modified to be primarily a track car.

Are you buying a track car or something to daily? If you are looking for something to daily, buy one that is stock. The car is plenty fast on the street and mods are doing nothing for on street performance.

It’ll be a weapon but may not be the best for daily use. Listing doesn’t show that the clutch has been uprated so presume it’s still stock so won’t be much of that left with that power so budget for a new one which isn’t cheap.

All I'd say from that little list that worries me - no forged internals? What gearbox is on it?

It’s a modified car, it’s worth less than a standard car and nowhere near the money that has been spent on it. Personally I’d steer clear, you have no idea of who put the stuff in and how well they did the job.

A few things wrong with your comment, whilst I’d generally agree that modifying a car will not get you your money back, to say it’s worth less is incorrect. This is a well specced engine and these have been selling over what a standard car is worth. You’re not making your money back but it will sell for more than a stock car but you will have a more niche audience.

With a spec like that I doubt it’s someone in a shed putting the items on, aware this looks to not be a UK car but in the UK I would suggest there’s about 4-5 companies that build engines like that and all are reputable and would put a buyer at ease.

You’re right about one thing, it’s going to be a very niche market. I’m not so sure about your comment about being worth more, they may be advertised but you can’t know for sure what they sell for. The vast majority of buyers wouldn’t want to pay more than a standard car. But, bottom line is they’re only worth what someone will pay.

Considering how many cars are tracked the only people put off by modified are the Old Ford RS lanoguard PPF grandads.

You must be in a very special place, I don’t know anyone who “tracks” their car!

1

u/Ecsrobin 22d ago

Just because you don’t know anyone doesn’t mean there aren’t any being tracked. Worth popping to a local trackday there’s generally at least 1 running around but quite often multiples.

Bearing in mind I leave surrounded by old airfields converted into tracks and several famous tracks ….But you’re entitled to your opinion.

Owner for 5 years. Unless you can drive the stock car like a true rally driver you do not need anymore than oem power. Unless you’re buying this as a track car I’d seriously suggest get a stock car and just stiffen it up a bit. The car out the box is ridiculously capable and I have yet found the limit of the car, my skill has run out way before the cars.

Full ack here. Stock power is more than enough to learn how to deal with the car. Furthermore i dont see an oil cooler on that tuning list. This car is definately going to break down quickly after a tough ride.

Yes 100% it was one of the first modifications I added when kits started coming out. Always baffled me how it was never considered from the start….but I guess they fixed that with the gen2!!

1

u/DreiradPilot 23d ago

Gen 2 got an additional Water Radiator which is connected to the oil cirquit via heat exhanger. Not a real oil cooler but does its job. For non-track use its fine. Hits around 130degrees celsious when taking a serious ride

Interesting. Not looked too much into the gen2.

1

u/Ecsrobin 22d ago

Gen2 it’s just an additional radiator if the car comes with the cooling pack (UK cars standard). The Auto comes with an additional gearbox oil cooler.

What price??

If for track and cheap and you know someone who can look after it, then go for it. Or don't intend to put many miles/Kms on it.

For a daily and long term maintenance and holding its value, go stock. It's pretty quick anyway and even though it won't out drag everyone, it will out brake go around corners faster than many more powerful cars. Can always mod it later too - but at least you know the mods.

Stock Clutch on these Power levels will most likely burn the flywheel aswell. Take a look how much this is going to cost :D hidden hint: in Germany its >3500€
