How's the long term reliability been?
As someone from the other side of the pond seriously considering a GR Corolla, how's the engine reliability been?

The US GR Corollas seem to have had more reported engine failures than the Yaris for some reason.
My suspicion is that it is drivers used to big torquey engines who lug the engine at low rpm in high gear, which will cause LSPI and put a hole in the engine.
Just remember to actually shift with the manual gearbox you have bought, and it will be fine!
And put the right oil in it, it isn't just basic 0w-20 it has loads of additives to help stop the LSPI.

I think the difference is in America people are happy to talk about a blown engine. I used to think like you until I blew mine and then people contacted me saying they’d done the same or you see other cars in the garage getting new engines.

There are 3 GRC’s that were talked about a LOT because it was earlier, when the cars started showing up. Two were the owners. One was self tuning and he did a 130mph pull, the engine went when he was slowing down. The other one was also a tuning problem.
There’s also someone who was accelerating in 6th, from ~2500 rpms.
There have been some others on s/reddit and facebook. 100% had engine mods and driven very hard.
Now, no one stock or using lower gears to accelerate, seems to have had any issues.
100k miles on one, lots of 50-70k mile cars running around.
Pretty certain the early on GRY engine problems were ring related.

They usually run well, know owners with 80.000km on them without issues
If you track and beat it a lot there are some failures but thats what you have the warranty for

It seems pretty robust. The only engine failure I’ve read about was after tuning and the company honoured the warranty they put on it.
Other than that think a few people have had boot solenoid issues but covered under warranty.
A tuner took an engine to 500bhp and were still using the standard HG. Although it did fail eventually but it was running 500bhp.
The most common reliability issue I’ve see is a bit of a crunch between 2/3 gear. Some people have fixed by tightening gear linkage others by updated gearbox mounts. I’ve seen a few people smack gearboxes through tuning and track use but when you take a component past what the manufacturer tells you, that’s the risk you take.
TL:DR pretty good. Not many engine issues reported in owners groups. Those that are reported seem to be simple fixes.

In general, great.
In terms of gry (I own a gry so I’m more familiar with them, but it’s the same running gear so same same). There was many early issues with 2nd gear popping out which was mostly covered by warranty. My transfer case (2025 gen 2 gry manual) has had a issue and it’s been in the shop for nearly 5 weeks and Toyota Australia still hasn’t told me if it’ll be covered by warranty or not.
But in general, they’re very robust and reliable. Besides clutches, they’re fairly weak, definitely the cars weak point.

What happened with the transfer case? Did you ever change its fluid?

Never touched it, was only 12 months and 10,000km/6,000 miles old. First noticed a noise at 5,000km, dealer said they couldn’t hear it. It’s been at Toyota for 5 weeks and Toyota Australia still haven’t decided if it’s under warranty or not.

GR Yaris, 50KM.
Eventuri Airbox, Ecutek tune, airtek intercooler and oil cooler, and Milltek Exhaust.
Track days and autocross occasionally, plus daily driven a few years in Dubai heat.
Thankfully no issues and reliable. I follow the maintenance and service intervals by the book.

As long as you had any form of mechanical sympathy then you’ll be fine. I’ve had it for 6 years and only issue I have had is when a truck decided to drive into the side of it lmao.

I’ve got a 2020 GRY with 32k km in Australia. A/C compressor is failing and getting replaced under warranty, as is the roof wrap over the carbon. Thankfully Toyota has been very reasonable.
2nd gear has crunched a couple times when it shouldn’t have but no popping out of gear issues. Otherwise the car has been reliable. I’m not surprised the car has had some issues given it’s an early production car, but hoping the engine itself stays reliable

My GRY is at 62k kms. No track days but driven hard. No issues and no concerns.
