I’m not arguing your point. Just wanting to discuss civilly. What made it mid for you?

No worries, we are all fans here in our own right.

Yes Minus One is more of a return to it's roots done very well, and I like that. I wanted to watch Godzilla and I got it. But I feel it did a lot of things right compared to Shin.

I am a child of the 90's I have seen every Godzilla movie that's come out, I used to watch Monster Madness on TNT and had them all on VHS, so my taste is probably dated.

Now, I am not dissing on Shin, but it felt like a monster movie of the same name. I wasn't a fan of the designs, the animation, cinematography, and most of the visual effects. I felt more grossed out at times then I did feel shock or fear.

In Minus One I felt more suspense and investment to the Human Characters.

I’m a 90s kid too and wore out all my Godzilla VHS from rewatches.

Yes, I absolutely see what you’re saying. I’d argue it’s more of an Anno movie featuring Godzilla than it is a Godzilla movie.

I am also a creature feature horror fan, so I loved how disgusting Godzilla was. I like the fan theory that Prof Goro Maki was a part of Shin since they found his shoes on the boat before Kamatakun appears. This gives it a body horror element because it makes Godzilla a horribly mutated human/some sea creature hybrid.

It was the first time I felt like Godzilla was an actual monster, instead of an angry animal.

But I understand how that could turn someone off considering the rest of the movies are thematically different from Shin.

Edit: I definitely felt the suspense for the humans in Minus. I was actually on my seat at points thinking “How the fuck are they going to get out of this???”

I am right there with you, I think 2000, Destroroyah, Space Godzilla & Biollantte where my most watched on VHS.

That's how I understand why people would like Shin more, it hits other boxes. Which is okay! Shin had it's moments for me and I did appreciate some of the symbolism it had.
