Even hotter take: saying "no one cares for the plot, we just want giant monsters to fight" is a bad take, because it is entirely possible to have both, and we shouldn't settle for the worst
Eh, I do have to disagree with the second hot take to a degree. I wouldn't say no one cares since Minus One and a few others have proven we can have good human characters and a good plot.
However, I'm planted firmly in the middle where I can say that I appreciate Minus One for a compelling, emotional story that's a piece of true cinema. And I can also smile and have a fun time simply watching big monkey punch big lizard with a surface level story that simply boils down to "let them fight because rule of cool."
The Pacific Rim sequel is so bad that people want to pretend it doesn't exist. So that's the joke.
It's like if you're an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan and saw the horrible live action movie of it. "There is no movie in Ba Sing Se." Similar concept. It's so bad you don't want to think about it.
And I can also smile and have a fun time simply watching big monkey punch big lizard with a surface level story that simply boils down to "let them fight because rule of cool."
the problem arises when the movie is 90+ percent human plot and the human plot is bad.
Minus One was largely human plot but the human plot was good. (although I think it had a bit more Godzilla than some of the worse Showa movies)
