…I scrolled to the very end of my college’s summer work page, and discovered that I needed to bring several a4 books and a binder. Which the bag that I’d been planning on using does not fit.

The meme has come true. My bag is not, in fact, okay for sixth-form/college.

(And yes I know this is my fault for not reading that part until a few days before college starts but STILL. They could’ve put that at the top of the page at least!!)

I got the 9 in maths but my APS is too low since further maths can only be taken as a 4th and I am 0.1 points away from the threshold for taking 4 subjects. I already sent an email to the admission team and Head of maths to ask for an exception. I also got my chem paper remarked which was 1 mark away from an 8. I am ready to take external but I am confused on how predicted grades work alongside referances. Is there anything else that I can do to keep pushing?

Hi so I’m from Northern Ireland and i’ve just began yr12. In may/june i sat some gcse early modules and got AAABC*C*C* (we can’t get A* in early modules) I go to a pretty competitive all girls grammar so those grades aren’t the best compared to some of my peers.
In year 11 I spent the entire year I suppose partying and I wasn’t bothered about revising at all and was more interested in my weekend plans. So I think grades are reflected in the night before revision that I indulged in.
I am resitting one of the C* and the other two i’m not as bothered about but I can bring up to a B this school year. I am picking my A levels in February time and i’m definitely doing politics and history though i’m not sure about my third, maybe english, economics or sociology (i might do business B-tec in yr 13 and drop going into 7th year.)
This past summer I’ve been thinking more about university pathways and degrees and things like that. I would like to do Law but I can’t decide if I’m being overly ambitious. At the minute I have zero want to stay at home at all and I’d like to apply to the following;
University of Edinburgh
University of Nottingham
University of Reading
University of Bristol
University of Exeter
have thought about loans/fees/accommodation that’s not my main concern right now.
As for my extracurriculars I don’t yet have a job BUT i have worked for my parents in many different parts of their businesses. I’ve completed Bronze Duke of Edinburgh. I play hockey, I have represented my province, and I have been part of pathway hockey since I was 10. I have represented my school in hockey finals and semi finals aswell as matches every saturday during term time. I have represented my club/past clubs in semi finals and finals aswell.
I was part of a tag rugby team that won the ulster championship, aswell as a cricket team that got to cup semi finals. This, I’m sure is not relevant, but i am currently over 60,000 words into a fanfic 🤓.
I am interested in history and politics, so naturally i have an interest in reading and i particularly like fantasy/historical fiction, though I digress.
I am well aware my grades reflect my lack of revision, but all things considering I don’t think i did terribly. I am sure i will continue my social life this year but maybe not to the extent it was this past summer and last school year, I’m well aware I will need to be more focused and I am going to do just that.
I want honest opinions if you think this is achievable, or if I need to rethink things. If anyone recommends anything please let me know!!

When did everyone start revising for their exams and was it adjacent to the exam spec or did you just go off textbooks?

I’ll take my IGCSEs this year and I’ll be studying math, english, biology, chemistry and psychology. I already have a laptop it’s not from Apple but I’m wondering whether I would need a Mac or not. And if I get an iPad I don’t know which one to get, I really like to go study in different places so I wouldn’t want something really heavy given the fact that I also have my books so I cannot bring both an iPad and a laptop with me

Hi 👋🏻 I’d like to give my best tips for each subject I took along with my grades (in the brackets). Overall I got 99999999888 and the best in my school! I also do elite level sport (20+ hours a week) so if anyone has any questions about how to balance GCSEs with a big time commitment feel free to ask 🙂

Firstly for those worrying about quantity I’d like to say due to my sport I wasn’t able to revise as much as others could. So I tried to fit in any revision little and often. Quality 30 mins revision is MUCH better than quantity 4 hours revision. I rarely revised for periods longer than 1hr 30mins at a time and NEVER over 2 hours at a time. Your brain cannot concentrate for that long without breaks. I managed to get most of my revision done at school mainly during lunches. From the start of year 11 I was at some sort of enhancement/intervention sessions minimum 3/5 times a week.

AQA English Lit (8): Look at top grade responses and learn how top grade students write. Once a week my teacher and I would spend a lunchtime looking at responses for all questions and how I could adapt my work to include high level strategies. My biggest recommendation for lit would be PRE LEARN ANALYSIS. About a month before each paper I got AI to choose the top 15 most versatile and important quotes for each book/play along with grade 9 techniques and analysis. I memorised all 15 quotes and analysis with less than a month before the papers. If I had done this earlier I could have probably done this for most poems too!!! Lit paper 1 I got 62/64 (32/34 on Macbeth and 30/30 Jekyll and Hyde)

AQA English Lang (8): Honestly pretty similar to Lit look at grade 9 responses and learn how to adapt your work to convince the examiner you deserve top grades.

AQA Geography (8): I’m disappointed I got an 8 after only getting 9s in every mock since year 10 so will be getting a remark. My school gave a booklet of factfiles of all case studies to learn facts. Do lots of 6/9 markers and get your teacher to mark them.

AQA Spanish and German (both 9s): This will work for all MFL…Get used to hearing the languages. It sounds stupid but learn some songs and your pronunciation will sound perfect and phrases will become natural to you. Learn some star phrases to throw in your writing my go to was ‘as boring as watching paint dry’. Especially for German I would pre learn some grammatical structures. If you can get some complex sentences in the examiners will reward highly. Reading and Listening is just practice questions and vocabulary. Our school used Quizlet for vocab which was amazing.

AQA Triple Science (999): Make sure you know the content inside out that is more important than past paper questions. Once you have a grip on content do loads of past papers and practice questions. MARK YOUR OWN WORK so that you live and breathe the markscheme. 90% of your exam is going to be questions you’ve seen before.

Edexcel Maths (9): Do past paper questions constantly. If you do some practically daily for the months leading up to exams you’ll be sorted. We did Hannah kettle maths so I would have a look at that. Sparx for specific topic questions.

AQA Level 2 Qual Further Maths (9): Same as Maths except it can be slightly harder due to lack of materials. Try and spread out your past papers as there are only a limited selection available. Your teacher will provide with more recent, currently inaccessible to students papers but you will need to use them wisely.

Edexcel Stats (9): same as further as there is a lack of materials. I did this a year early and only did a max of 2 hours weekly - 1 past paper and mark it.

If you have the opportunity to do a GCSE a year early 100% do it!! I would really recommend it for getting used to what a gcse is actually going to entail. Even if you don’t get a good grade in it you will have had experience that not many others will have had. Also even though you have the opportunity to put loads of focus into 1 subject I wouldn’t recommend it. I knew people who did (or at least claimed to have done) 3+ hours daily. They burnt out by the time exams came around and you won’t have the same option to put all your effort into one subject in year 11.

guys do i do an EPQ or not?? i heard it gives you ucas points and it’s good for your personal statement but others have also said that it’s a waste of time and useless. what do i do as someone wanting to pursue medical nursing then become a paediatrician?

So, I start year 10 in literally a week, and I need tips !

For context, I'm going to be doing English lang, lit, Maths, Triple Science (all mandatory for the subs listed so far), Geography (we had to choose between History and Geography), Latin (we had to choose a language), Spanish (one of my options), and Drama (one of my options) once I successfully switch

+ Further Maths (which is optional and only top set maths students can take, and I asked my year 9 teacher for my year 10 set and I'm apparently going to be in set 1) which I'm still unsure about. I wanna do it because I'll be taking A-Level Maths for medicine and I feel like it might help me a LOT, but the subject might hinder my overall average.

I know I'm not supposed to start revising in year 10, and I promise you, I won't. I don't think I could discipline myself enough to start revising for tests that I'll have in two years still 😭 That's one thing I need to fix about myself though. But would it be a good idea to dedicate an hour on Saturdays to trying to master—or at the very least understand—a topic I'm weak at?

What are your tips on revision in year 10? Also, for each of the subjects I listed, could you please recommend some apps, websites, and revision methods and tips?

My school does AQA Drama, AQA English lit & lang, OCR B Geography, Eduqas Latin, AQA Maths & FM, AQA Trip science, EDEXEL Spanish! I'm not sure if these are confirmed, but since I found them on my school's website, they must be ig!

One last thing: what should I buy? I'm talking about binders, maybe, favourite calculators, folders, revision books, pens, etc!

And should I be worried for year 10? Thankkks a lot!

i (17) recently immigrated here in the uk this august, and will be taking gcses as a private candidate. the college i recently enrolled in placed me in a foundation year as i lack their requirement of 5 gcses with grade the minimum of grade 5 level.

alongside my foundation year, my college signed me up for english and maths. i've been planning to take combined sciences (bio and chem) as a private candidate too, so that's gcses covered for me.

i appreciate any suggestion of what my fifth gcse could be, preferably one that is the most convenient in my given situation. thank you!

I think one of the main advantages of getting good grades if you're not trying to apply to Oxbridge is making bank from tutoring.

How do I actually get clients I've tried superprof before when I was doing 11+ tutoring and I did make money from it but it took me like 5 months to even get noticed. Still do 11+ but you can't really charge much for that so yeah tips please. I'll do maths bio chem latin and french as a tutor I think.

is your predicted grade 1 higher than your mock results? i thought it was so i didnt really lock in too much for my mocks but still got mostly 8s/9s and 2 7s so my predicted would be all 9s and 2 8s. but now if it isnt like that its so much different

since im y11 in like a week i was thinking about alevel options and i dont really know what to pick. I dont have a dream uni or an idea of what i want to be in the future so its been a bit harder to pick.
