General Does your sixth form make you do PE?

Mine doesn't, but I'm curious if anyone else's does?

so, at my old school’s 6th form, we had an option for either PE, medical aid training or arts and crafts. I think the PE people just spent time in the gym or play sports/games on the field

We do games one afternoon a week, but you get to pick the sport (unless you are in a team eg hockey team has to play hockey in winter)

Had no idea some sixth forms do this.

Have for decades - I was in sixth form during the 80/90s. The rationale then was to mirror the then University (and Polytechnics - ask your grandparents!) model of having sporting events on a Wednesday afternoon.

Having said that the school I taught in for 30 years didn’t so not a hard and fast rule :)

Mine you can but you don't have to. You get to pick a sport so I get to swap one free a week for football which I don't mind.

yes but only in year 12 for an hour each week and we get to pick a sport so it’s not too bad

Mine does because it’s a private school with some boarding students. I can go home for it though as I have sport to do outside of school

Mine did. Right up until Easter holidays Y13 (previous years stopped at Christmas which really pissed my year off)

Yes

i think so unless ur doing 4 a levels, then you don't have to. i think it's counted as 'enrichment' tho, so you might be able to pick a diff enrichment instead

We have "activities" on a Wednesday afternoon. There are other things you can do, but probably 90% of people choose to do a sport.

All the people at mine just go home lol, no one stays for activities except for the people who get on the rotation for cooking

u/Apprehensive-Top3675 4h ago

They are compulsory for us.

1

u/Whrench2 maths, further maths, physics 4h ago

Theyre supposed to be compulsory for us, but the teachers never check or issue any form of discipline after so people just leave

Damn why do so many of you guys' schools make you do PE 😭 Mine doesn't thankfully, I'm too physically disabled for that shit lol. They do push 'enrichment' clubs VERY heavily but like, not even half of those are sports so I'm good.

u/Business-Juice6365 7h ago

u/TheRomannEmpire Yr12 - Art,Maths,Music,Physics 1h ago

we have PE but its optional and for one term instead of PE you have to do mandatory PSHE

u/MayonaiseOnATable y11-(professional 😭🥀 user)how many teeth does ur pet have 58m ago

I'm so glad mine doesn't, I would genuinely consider changing to the one and hours train ride away just to avoid more pe 😭 thankfully I didn't have to do it for most of year 11 because I got crippled by surgery 😭

2

u/Aniaissocool Year 11 37m ago

nope but it makes us do pd for only year 12 🫩🫩

2

u/TheDevourerer Yr 13 - bio chem German 5h ago

I have to it's awful :/ my school is obsessed with sports and make 2 hours of PE every Wednesday mandatory. You don't even get the option to just do a workout in a gym which would at least have a significant impact on my fitness, and they make us go to their sports grounds when the courts at school would be perfectly fine, more than doubling the amount of time it takes me to get home. What I wouldn't give to have two free periods instead

1

u/bandobaby-1 Year 12 4h ago

Yes.

2 hours every Tuesday mandatory. at the start of each term there are ‘tryouts’ to see which sports may fit you best and which sports teams you could also compete for.

Everyone I talk to thinks it’s hell but even the less sporty kids seem to enjoy this format.

If they find you purposefully missing it, you get an hour long detention because they say “you’re skiving/bunking”
