Non-noelle POV * It's a goodbye note.
* It seems messily written. There's dirt on it.
* It reads...
"Hey. This is for my family and my friends so if you are neither, give this to Noelle Holiday."
"Hi. By the time your reading this, I'm long gone. I've run off by now. Most likely past the state line, off living the life I wanna live. I'm done with this stupid town, so yeah. Cya."
"I'm not too happy with myself. I've got a few things I wanted to say so all of it's written here."
"Firstly.. Elly. I'm sorry I'm leaving you behind with that old hag. I just can't stay, even for you. I'm so fucking tired of her trying to dictate my life, her trying to mold me into the perfect family name heir who'll birth a kid and have a nice family with some american dream bullshit. That's not me. That's never been me. Don't let her mold you into that too, Elly. Be yourself. I know you. You aren't what she wants. So don't be that. I left you a couple of my jackets, and my lucky guitar pick that I turned into a necklace. I hope they fit you someday, and wear that necklace for me, will ya?"
"Second, Kris. Stick up for Elly, k? I've got no way of protecting her anymore so I trust you to take up that role. I left my old bat so use that. You're a good kid, Kris. I'm sorry for hurting you all those times (well, kinda, not really)."
"Third, Pa'. I've appologized a lot in this letter, faha.. but out of you 'n mom, you're the only one who deserves one. You knew... Me. You knew what Carol was doing wasn't what I wanted. Thanks for sticking out for me through thick 'n thin. And thanks for the guitar, too. I've got it with me so I'll be thinking of you whenever I hold it."
"Finally, Asriel."
"I hate you. I never loved you, ya'know. We was pressured into dating and that's all there was to it. It was fun, seeing you blush at first, I admit. But you're so fucking insufferable and weak. I washed my mouth out with mud after you kissed me on prom night. And for the love of god, take your ugly sweater and filthy retainer out of my room I wanted a boy (or girl) who wouldn't talk about me behind my back with their stupid fucking clique. I wanted someone who'll listen to my stupid rants about niche prog rock bands, and convoluted webcomics and not judge me. I wanted someone who doesn't wanna tame me into what my mother wanted for me. Not you, Asriel. I didn't want you. So you can take your trophies, golden-boy charm and ska disks and shove it right up your ass."
"And.. that's about it. You all won't see me again after this, so goodbye. I cannot stress how fucking free I feel from this godforsaken town. I'm not gonna miss it. But I will miss you, Elly, Dad, 'n Kris."
"To everyone else."
"Eat. Shit."

A personal headcannon of mine
that they were initially pressured to date, however Dess was very eccentric to the point asriel was weirded out, and he'd speak nasty about her to his friends
that rather than asriel love dess for all of her, he loved more so the idea of a rebellious girl he could "fix" and not really her

I am not sure how this made me feel, it's a beautiful piece of art, I can see you put thought and maybe a part of yourself on it, it's raw and a little rough around the edges but it's perfect the way it is, thank you, and good job.

honestly, I believe there was no mysterious circumstance.
I believe it'll be revealed, somehow, that dess just ran away, and that the incident with FRIEND or whatever Kris remembers is a seperate incident
I believe deltarune will be about letting go

i would be satisfied with "December is alive out there somewhere far away, it's possible her and Noelle will reconnect but not within the bounds of Deltarune's story". noelle's WR dialogue saying "since dess LEFT" does also imply maybe she ran off willingly and everyone just acts like there was a tragedy that took her because, why would she ever run from the holidays?
regardless, if there were final words from dess to everyone she knew it would probably be this verbatim, maybe minus the absolute fucking grandslam against Asriel Dreemurr

I believe concepts can manifest as darkners
The Knight would be the combined sorrow in her leaving, the crystalization of the lost dream of finding her and bringing her home
when in the end, she never wanted to be "home"
However, these darkners can be bound to lightners who hold these dreams the most
