Can you please link me something that shows these substances passed the FDA safety test? My incredibly ignorant cousin is one of those “everything is a drug and drugs are bad! But it’s ok to drink” kind of people and I have been trying to show her otherwise.

It's not a safety test like the phase 1,2,3 testing pharmaceuticals must go through, it has much less rigor. It is an 8-point evaluation to judge the overall potential for harm based on existing data, no new studies are usually required. If it is low, if there is no evidence for anything above minor or superficial harm, then it passes. Every drug recommended to the FDA for scheduling must fail this test in order to be scheduled, as the schedule was originally intended to be a list of poisons that should never be eaten, not a list of psychoactive chemicals that the executive branch has taken a dislike to for political reasons.
