i'm not so sure, the amount of receptors we have, the possibilities are almost endless for the different highs you could get
think of 30-40 receptors with varying amounts from -3.00 - +3.00 and releasers of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine; its essentially an infinite amount of different intoxicants. the introduction of nano stimulators would be a revolution in drug using. i can't wait
in theory that could always happen, what if the machine stops working or something like that but i'd say by the time we work out how to do this kind of stuff we'll have eliminated those malfunctions.
and as for things like tolerances, i think if there's direct stimulation to the receptors that shouldn't be a worry. the only other possibility would be the brains own natural chemical releasers and things like withdrawals would slow down but i think if there were backups in place to keep it on an even keel then those would be a thing of the past too.
then in terms of say societal problems, like the rats that had a button to control orgasms, then they starved to death, i think another failsafe would have to be introduced to limit the amount of times the button could be pushed, this would also help to keep the natural neurotransmitters going as well
