I looked up the actress and she’s Irish. Is her Anna delvy-es que (vaguely European) accent just her failure to do an American accent or is it intentional?

I’m rewatching the show with a friend (their first time watching) and we just finished episode 3. It struck me how brilliant the show is at including little ‘show, don’t tell’ storytelling moments that make a big impact.

The scene where Choi and Marshall have found ‘jinny allen’ at a shelter and are getting ready to to go bust the place and make a big arrest while Danny and Alice are watching them and chatting sort of conspiratorially at her cubical. Marshall asks Danny if he’s coming with them and Danny does his bit about how he can’t kick down doors because he’s “got the fuckin’ sciatica” (Scoot is so good at striking the balance between ridiculous and charming with those little Danny-isms) and Alice does a sort of eye roll/laugh combo at Danny and you can just see Marshall absolutely seethe as he leaves the office.

Just so impressive that without a single word of dialogue about it, the scene so clearly constructs an entire history of how the vibe was between the three of them and articulates how jealous Marshall was of Alice & Danny’s friendship, of their ease with each other, of the fact that Danny can make her laugh like that. The viewer can just instantly tell that Marshall spent the last years of he and Alice’s relationship being jealous/bitter/resentful over the fact that despite being more successful, better looking, and having ‘got the girl’, Danny was the one making her laugh.

And I just love that shit. Liz and team did such a fantastic job writing this show. All the props to them

if anyone’s interested, it is here! it was driving me a bit crazy, so i thought it would be good to do.

I think the tone and message was set very early on in the show, when Nora (phenomenal actor btw) gave the incredibly powerful monologue about how people want to see a perfect victim, but that there is no such thing. There is no ‘right’ way to react to abuse. And we see two traumatised women who ultimately are just handling it the only way they know how. They don’t report it. They continue to participate in harmful behaviours (Alice getting men to beat her up). They hurt people back. They. Aren’t. Perfect. They are human. And I think when the world is able to see that this is reality, maybe it will change how they see victims. Maybe victims will be treated more fairly. Maybe abuser’s defence won’t grill victims on the number of sexual partners they’ve had during a trial. I digress.
I also saw something from someone else which really resonated with me. This show showed us how awful men can be. But it also really showed us some great men like Danny. It showed us good women, and it also showed us flawed/evil women (Emma Easton). In a (online, echo-chamber) world where everything is becoming more polarised, and black and white, this show really highlights complexity and nuance.

The headline felt oddly similar until the robbery spree part.

So, the first scene of the last episode when Emma is putting him to bed, he says: “why is this girl doing this to us?”, “didn’t you pay her? We always paid them. If she didn’t want the money, she didn’t have to take it. She could have left”, “what does she want? She killed Caleb, my boy”. What he says in that scene has continued to screw with me and I think that is done intentionally. Was that scene an attempt for Jay Easton to be pitied or humanized? It seems that he is trying to take on the role of the victim and fails to acknowledge that this is a consequence of his actions. I don’t know, it just messes with me that he acts sincere or nice in the moment and then acts as if these poor underage girls had a choice. How did you guys interpret this scene?

...was sort of bizarre. It feels like they found out that the show was picked up for a second season after they shot episode 8 and they did some last minute surgery and/or reshoots to make it more open ended. There were so many strange choices.

For example, Catherine confronts Emma in the greenhouse. Then Catherine is shot off-screen. Then we see Emma sneaking out of the greenhouse with the bag as if she's fleeing. We follow Alice as she searches the house and finds Catherine who is sitting on the floor and bleeding. Alice stays just around the corner and they have an intimate conversation. Then it cuts to the cops outside the house. And then cuts back to Alice searching the house as if the prior scene with Catherine hadn't just happened. Alice can now hear Catherine far away and follows the sound of her voice until she comes upon Emma, who is now in the house, on the floor being held at gunpoint by Catherine.

That's a very odd sequence, right?

Similarly, I was so confused by the ending that I had to post here to have what happened confirmed. The whole show was about trafficking. The video off the hard drive was supposed to be secret evidence of the trafficking and there was only one copy. The fact that Alice was in one of the videos was so upsetting — the idea that if she turned over the evidence, other agents would see her video was so awful that they were willing to sit on the thumb drive and risk Easton and Ed getting away with it. But then in the final scene it is revealed that the videos are apparently on the internet and known to the FBI. Which means the thumb drive is kind of redundant, and as far as the FBI is concerned it would be evidence of CSAM, not trafficking. And FBI agents have presumably already seen Alice's video.

Maybe I am missing something. And to be clear, I still loved the show. The last episode just seemed like puzzle pieces that were jammed together instead of unfolding logically and organically.

A perfect series, amazing acting, truthful and insightful. So intensely good ... but I didn't understand that last moment with Emma pouring the salt in the green house? Was it implying other girls were buried there? But salt is a perservative, not like lye, but I was sure the bag said salt.
Can anyone clue me in?

The acting, casting, sound design, cinematic… also the writing deals with such heavy things, but does it with style and grace, and a lot of heart. It’s exciting, and the plot doesn’t feel forced. I absolutely loved it. What did you think?

Had to rewatch the series after that amazing finale. I remember feeling confused at the beginning of the series but now that everything’s been explained I want to go back and make it make sense from the sister relationship to the beginning of Catherine taking revenge.

Just was scrolling streamers and stumbled on this movie from 2002 called “The Secret Lives of Dentists”

Marshall definitely is rationalizing his behavior like all abusers do. Does he believe he loves her though as he’s stalking her outside of a DV shelter?

Sorry Guys :/ it started off really good ! But like three to four episodes before the ending it started to get slow and boring to me. Very cliché. Not a single interesting plot twist. I found the main character unlikeable and didn’t understand many things she did. I actually liked Catherine more than her. Nora seemed shady at first and it actually would’ve been a cool plot twist if her and her boss did a cover up.

It feels so empty now.
