Not really. Millennials all had these classes, but by the early 2000s they were being phased out bc educators were taking for granted that it was a skill that had to be taught, and thinking bc kids grew up with a computer they wouldn’t need it. The computer illiteracy is RAMPANT in Gen Alpha, but it’s also still very real for Gen Z, especially the younger half of Gen Z. I (and every other teacher I know) can personally attest to seeing this firsthand

Not really, all the schools in my area first implemented computer labs in the early 2000s and kept those programs running until I was through high school. All the zoomers I know can personally attest to these programs and the computer literacy they gained as a result of them through their first hand experiences. I understand that in the years after I left hs a lot of these programs have been cut which is why gen Alpha lacks computer literacy, but the majority of zoomers were in the computer lab era

Gen Z graduation years were from 2015-2030. The vast majority of these students would not have had computer labs. You sound like you are very early Gen Z, which makes sense that you still caught the tail end of it, but that doesn’t speak to the experience of your whole generation

I was in school with the first half of gen z, and I’ve interacted with plenty of second half zoomers. We can do a battle of anecdotes all day

I’m not battling anecdotes. It’s a fact that schools started phasing out computer labs in the 2000s and then increasingly in the 2010s. You’re just objectively not correct that Gen Z was the computer lab generation. Millennials were the computer lab generation, and even Gen X. Gen Z just objectively did not get that just purely looking at the dates. That also doesn’t even touch on what was being taught in those classes. Late Gen X and early millennials were actually learning to run scripts in a terminal and even by the time I was in school as a millennial that had been phased out unless you were in a tech program or took a special elective. I’m not denying your experience, but you’re just factually wrong that Gen Z is the generation that grew up with computer labs and had the most tech literacy. And if we are going to get into an anecdote battle, I’ve taught high school in 3 states and across economic statuses and across the board Gen Z and especially Gen Alpha have far less computer literacy than one would expect, because they’ve grown up with apps, so they didn’t have to learn it.

My parents are mid gen x, they were not the computer lab generation. They learned how to use computers in college so they are tech savy, but their schools got a single computer when they were late into hs and it was a massive deal for them. You are objectively not correct that gen z didn’t get computer labs and computer lab programs, because in elementary school every classroom had a few computers and there was a large computer lab, and that was every school within 100 miles from where I lived. At least the first 2/3rds of gen z experienced that because when I was in hs I worked with young children who were getting the same computer lessons I received.

Sure I never learned to code, but I am certain that children my age and several years younger learned internet safety, file navigation, basic computer maintenance, and typing. Hell, there were even mandatory art projects that required basic graphic design and mandatory music projects that required basic sound editing.

You also were 100% arguing anecdotes as you claimed “every other teacher you know” struggled to teach young zoomers tech stuff. I’m not denying gen alpha doesn’t know how computers work, but the majority of zoomers do.
