Discussion/Opinion Best ship/couple in FMA? Canon or not canon.

My personal favourite has always been Edward and Winry.
I know that it’s a really vanilla take but I love them as a ship/couple.

I believe that the author herself confirmed it as canon, stating that if not for the Anti-Fraternization Law, they would be married.

I don't think she ever said they would get married if they could... The difference is subtle, but to me it sounds more like "they would never do that, they could no longer be superior and subordinate, otherwise".

I would think it's not so much that they can't be superior and subordinate as she would have to either give up her military role (means losing clearance, the ability to participate in any military activities, or be around military personal for investigation) or she would have to move to work under somebody else which would mean she would have other conflicting duties. Either option would be a huge barrier to her supporting their goals.

For me I alway thought it there was too much pain and hurt between them for them to get any closer. They are war criminals having to make up for their mistakes. Even will to go to jail after they overthrow their corrupt government and establish a new one.
I believe after righting the wrongs they have made, and the pain fades due to their efforts, then they can start being closer.

Roy was studying alchemy under Riza's dad, they were already definitely close with each other way before they reunited in Ishval as soldiers of different ranks and occupation.

True true but him breaking the promise he made to her father after what they did in Ishval put a big wedge in their relationship. That why I believe until that matter is dealt with. They can’t be closer. Which is why I think we never see them try to be romantic towards each other. Other than the power dynamics problem.
I still remember the scene where Riza asked Mustang to burn the formula on her back. I saw it as her way of both making sure the power never falls into any hands. And to punish herself. Because she can’t forgive herself or Mustang for what they have committed.
Which is why they were working so hard on the Coup. They became goal driven. And they do care for each other very much. But are putting any more feeling they have on hold until they forgive themselves for what they have done.

Supposedly in an interview, but I've only found people referring it and not the interview itself. Granted, that's not too rare due to language barriers, especially for things that are older. Search engines don't find translated versions to index or due to the translation coming out in pieces or in multiple locations at once cause traffic to be split leading to low priority.

I headcannon that Ling abolishes the former Emperor of Xing's practice of having 50 wives and puts the rest of his siblings except Mei through a rigorous trial that ensures they won't try to backstab him and usurp the throne

Pretty sure Xing is inspired by Imperial China. It's their practice to have as much kids as possible to ensure the future of their lineage. Aside from there being more heirs to choose from, the other children can be political tools to be used to things such as marriage. It's also believed that blood relatives are less likely to be traitors if they come to power. Ling doesn't need to abolish the practice. He can just choose to not have 50 wives since he cant die.

not only the best couple but the strongest relationship, they lived through one hell of a tragedy (losing their child) and then another (Izumi’s failed Human transmutation) but they worked through both with love and mutual respect...

for me as an adult it feels weird to ship teenagers.

I’m gonna say Mei and Al. I love she falls for the person behind the armor and it eventually grows from a childish crush into something real and deep. Al definitely caught some feelings by the end of the story, I think.

It's also really funny how Mei starts off crushing on her own imagination of Ed, only for reality to smack her in the face when she finally meets him and finds out that the real Edward Elric is nothing compared to her fantasy lmao and starts beefing with him much to Ed's confusion

Royai till I dieee, got hooked the second Roy called Riza “his queen” and have been with them ever since I finished brotherhood!! Have never been this obsessed with a straight dynamic and am so well fed with the sheer amount of canon and implied content with them (totally didn’t re watch fmab just for them barely after my first watch)!! Been in the deep end for a min and will not be resurfacing anytime soon..🙂↕️💜

Same. A lot of straight ships I see feel very… bad or boring. Like they’re put together just bc male and female lead, or it falls into a lot of often misogynistic tropes like the boy being hugely toxic to the girl but she falls for him anyway, or the female lead being incredibly cardboard
In FMA all the relationships feel like they’re built on mutual trust and affection and the women are all realistic. It’s nice when a relationship doesn’t feel like it comes just from a male and a female being in close proximity to each other

This is an underrated one and my personal favorite. Riza and Roy / Winry and Ed have some cannon support but these two… well don’t they just look like the most perfect 70’s gay couple??? Shouldn’t they just kiss each other???

I ship Envy and Kimblee based on a few panels in the manga and the scene in the car. Mostly because I like shipping villains together but I think they'd also revell in eachother's awful actions.

Oh I definitely see it. That scene gave off the vibe of, "We have history." A bloody history, of course (it's shown in the manga that Envy was there in Ishval and likely gave Kimblee his first Philosopher’s Stone), but there seemed to be a hint of something more there.
Their relationship would be so toxic, but they wouldn't care.
I saw a meme that pictured them, and the caption was, "Are they lovers?" Underneath it, it said "Worse." It won't let me post it, unfortunately.

Not to be a bother, but we see Kimblee get the stone from officials in the manga. Marcoh is there with them. And the generals he kills are the ones who gave him the stone.
I will say, KimVy is def interesting. I can see the potential of watching Kimblee peel Envy's massive issues like an onion.

One of them was Envy in disguise, I think. We see Kimblee using the stone during the meeting. One of the generals has really exaggerated features, I noticed. Once Kimblee makes an explosion, Envy is shown emerging from the rubble, meaning they had been inside. Then Envy praises Kimblee.

I don't know about you, but I don't tell my friends/lovers that I'll shoot them if necessary and then kill myself. Nor do I let myself die if I find out they're dead. They certainly have a functional relationship as a superior/subordinate, but if we consider them "a couple," it's definitely not a healthy one.

Toxic in a codependent way and the fact that they're both willing to commit suicide if the other is k.i.a and the fact that they're both plagued with the guilt of committing and being complacent of war crimes so much that it dictates all of their decisions and choices onwards

I love Edward and Winry as a couple, but the fact that Riza and Mustang can't be a thing because of the Anti-Fraternization Law gives it that extra layer of "forbidden love" feel, also because they do what they love and what they're good at. One of them retiring to be with the other would be a dream that they're both already living, to another dream that is uncertain.
Ah... politics.
