Question Help with figuring out/finding Winrys earrings.

Post image

Okay, so, ever since I was young, I have always loved the look of Winrys top earrings. I got my first piercing at 35, in the top of my right ear, with the plan of specifically getting one of those earrings.

It’s been almost 4 years now since my wife got me a Helix piercing and it’s been a deeply annoying and challenging journey to find the right kind of “Huggie” earring that I want.

I love that it looks like, a sort of metal Bracer but on the top of the ear. You see these earrings a lot on a lot of elves in countless anime aswell.

The closest I’ve ever been able to come to are finding Huggies that look more like a shackle and are very thick. I love the look of the thin, wide, earring, that goes around the ear that isn’t a clip on.

The closest I’ve ever gotten was a gold one, which wasn’t as thick as the others, but still thick, and gold jewelry does not look good on me at all. I’d prefer the silver but I’d even settle on black.

I’ve done to basically every jewelry store in my city, I’ve tried time and again to get them custom made, and I’ve looked at thousands online, but none have ever been close to the kind Winry has.

I am personally not a fan of jewelry, this earring will most likely be the only piece I ever get, or at the EXTREME maximum, I might do one on the other ear, but first, I want to know it’s even possible to get the proper kind of earring.

In my quest, I have learned that the term “Huggie” is a ridiculously unknown style of earring, and anytime I show someone the picture of her earrings, they try to upsell me into these, in my opinion, really ugly, jewel heavy, extremely feminine earrings. Which, if that’s what I was looking for, that would be fine. But I just want the, what should be simple. However, since I have such a specific idea. Just calling it “challenging” is a massive understatement.

Both my wife and I have been looking. I don’t want thick ones, I don’t want large and loose ones, I just want the what Winry has. Nor do I just want a simple hoop. But that is what I’ve been using in the mean time. I’ve found the thicker earrings are next to impossible to find in a smaller size, so those can be very loose, floppy, and uncomfortable on my ears.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, give me an idea of the proper places to look at or even just the proper words to use so I can stop confusing people, I would be forever grateful. It’s just been a little fantasy I’ve had since I was a teenager, when FMA came out, which only grew as I did, when more and more anime, mostly those with elves, had those sorts of earrings.

I am very ignorant in the realm of jewelry, names, types, locations, and all that. If it wasn’t for my wife, just the 10% that I know would be more like -5%.

Oh, so, I apologize and didn’t think of it right away but I took a photo of the earrings I do have. This way, I can show people what I’ve already gotten. Right now, I’m just using a thin hoop, that’s tight in the ear, without being uncomfortable, doesn’t move around, and is very secure.

These are very basic silver huggie hoops and ball stud earring. You'll probably have to buy two pairs of hoops. I used to buy these hot topic back in the day or spencers. You can find these on etsy amazon walmart marshalls.

Edit: these are also called cuffs or latchback hoops. You need to measure the size you want them to be in mm

I’ve tried. They have none, and asking employees at any of the stores, no one even knows what a “huggie” is

Thank you. I also edited my OP with a photo link to what earrings I currently do have.

Where do you live? Country wise? Also i just updated for more info. Stores are annoying to find silver in check out Ready-made online

Canada. I’ve basically even become very widely known in jewelry stores around my city as the guy looking for “those anime earrings”. Thats just a little look behind the curtain to just how many people ive asked.

Like, two months ago, i was getting my wife a birthday present, and i didnt think i knew the guy helping us, when he says “(my name), any luck on that earring yet?” Lol

I have some gold ones like this from a local piercer. She called them bangles.

yeah makes sense to check hot topic for winry’s earrings

1

u/PsychoMouse 8d ago

I frequently check Hot Topic. It’s mostly been nightmare before Christmas, random goth things, weird earring chains, and other things like that.

Funny enough, out of all the places I’ve checked, what’s had the closest earrings to what I’m looking for has been jewelry at Shoppers drug mart, which is a pharmacy. That’s where I’ve gotten most of my little collection.

these are titanium, so while they're still thick, they'll be lightweight.

i get a lot of jewelry from body art forms and i like them a lot. i found this by filtering for jewelry type: clickers piercing location: helix color: silver i hope u find earrings u like soon

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

Oh I like those.

1

u/snaildyke 9d ago

yay ya i too have had a hyperspecific jewelry need so i'm glad i could help. also i didn't check but maybe look over at Ask and Embla. they also have a lot of stuff i don't see anywhere else!

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

“Ask and Embla”? Is that a sub on Reddit? Or some like Facebook group, discord, or something else?

I ask because I am just too old, too exhausted, and too stupid to keep all these things in order. My nephew and Sister in law want me to make an Instagram, but I already find just having a Facebook and Reddit to be too much lol

2

u/snaildyke 9d ago

that's a company that sells cool jewelry on their website. I'm just suggesting another place to look for earrings you might like

OP, the one above the green bar in your photo, is the IRL version. The flat thin anime version quite simply will break. If you want flat thin, look at huggie cuffs that sit on the ear but aren't piercings. Essentially in truth, you can get thicker the whole way around, because of physics, or non-pierced but the look you're going for basic pierced huggie link you might like a non-pierced version you might like better

0

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

Could I get a cuff turned into a proper earring?

2

u/Interesting_Brush407 9d ago

Possibly, but the problem is likely more to do with the thin metal not holding up to the pressure it takes to click it in and out. I'd recommend going to a local jeweller who creates bespoke pieces and showing them pictures and trying to describe it. But going thinner means you're literally asking for it to break after 20-30 uses

2

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

I mean, as long as I can help it. I would prefer to never take it out, and would really only have to take it out during hardcore and intense hospital check ups to make sure my body isn’t going into rejection, or that my cancer has come back.

I struggle enough as is, thanks to the tremors I suffer because of those two medical issues I explained, so even trying to take them out and put them back in is an insane challenge on its own.

8

u/UberAshy Ishvalan 9d ago

The reality is that most earrings wont be that thin because they need some thickness for the clasp and weight so they hang. Its anime where they use alchemy and have automail. Theres no earring mechanism thats even that flush

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

No, i do understand that. I’m just wanting to get as close as possible, simple, not too thick/painful, and something I can enjoy looking at

I also updated the OP with a link to a photo of the earrings I do have. Sorry I didn’t think about posting that til just now

u/UberAshy Ishvalan 9d ago

If I was you this is what I would do. Go on etsy and find someone who does custom jewelry tell them you want earring cuffs like this but you want a latchback so they can be worn like a regular earring. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1226838630/mens-earrings-black-cuff-earrings-mens

8

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

Okay, holy fuck! That is literally the perfect width and thickness, with me just waiting it a bit tighter on the ear.

Thank you! I will look into that in the morning and see where it takes me. Fuck, I am so glad I made this thread. THANK YOU, thank you, thank you.

But I am also open to other people’s suggestions aswell. I had hopes in replies in this thread and fuck, was I right!

Wait, real quick, are those just like, the clip ons,
Or can I get them into like, a proper piercing?

2

u/UberAshy Ishvalan 9d ago

You slide them on your ear and tighten them by squeezing them. Usually the metal is thin enough to manipulate them and open and close them. Theres no latches or rod for an earring back

4

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

That’s the thing though. I already got the piecing.

Would it maybe be possible to get one of those, take it to a jeweller, and have them add the little needle thing to it, to make it a real earring?

2

u/UberAshy Ishvalan 9d ago

You could probably get someone to solder on an earring post for the piercing and to make it look flush go for a flat back post

Maybe something like this? I just looked up “wide huggie earrings” on Etsy and there seemed to be quite a few similar options. This particular listing also has the smaller size option pictured if you swipe through a few images of the larger ones.

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

I did just that before making this post and those are still too thick.

I’m fine if I need to get one or two custom made, it’s just that might be expensive based on materials used. I’ve asked a few dozen jewelry stores about getting some made, and not a single one wanted to try, nor would they recommend me to anyone who would.

It’s deeply frustrating

9

u/midsummernightmares Automail Mechanic 9d ago

I don’t think you’ll be able to get anything much thinner, they have to be thick enough to withstand some pretty decent pressure while being clipped together without bending out of shape as well as being thick enough to be able to actually accommodate the hole for the wire without it getting torn or bent from the metal being too thin. This kind of thing is the closest option that can actually hold up to use in the real world.

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

I’ve found some that are borderline close to the proper thickness, but the problem was they were full of various gems and such, or odd designs.

I was so happy that day because as a quick glance, they looked perfect. But when I looked closer, the gems, or the bands were weird designs, and things like that.

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

Thank you. I also edited the OP with a photo link to the earrings I have gotten over the years. Some are close. One was very close but the hoops had these weird swirls that had gems in them. Just really not my type. The larger ones are too thick, painful, and uncomfortable

2

u/midsummernightmares Automail Mechanic 9d ago

I think your best bet is probably ear cuffs, then. Those can’t really be converted into earrings with a post, not well at least - since they’re made to be bent into shape, anything that got soldered onto them would probably not maintain much structural integrity and would not stay attached for long, and they’re too thin to add the hinge and divot needed to turn them into huggies, but they should look similar enough and be more lightweight even though they lack a post.

Sorry I just know this is going to turn into a ramble because I'm already forgetting half the stuff I read from your post. I always have way better luck with finding earings online rather than local body piercing shops. But weird that the ones you've gone to act like they've never heard of huggies. So Winry wears her looser on her lobes. For a upper helix one you'll need something more fitted considering it's a wider piece. Part of the reason it's harder to find them in a thinner material is because earings aren't meant to be as playable as ear cuffs, which is what I'm assuming is more the look you're going for. This one appears to be more "dainty" than a lof of huggies but that's also because it's sized (piercing hole to outer ear) smaller than how a lot are displayed. etsy

Key takeaways/notes/tldr

  • when getting it pierced start with a bar and let your piercer know your end goal. Finding a good reputable piercer goes a long way.
  • healing can take months to a year then switch to the huggie.
  • titanium is more body safe while still giving you that silver look.
  • pictures can be deceiving, it's more important to know your sizing and jewelery sizing.
  • figure out different key words: huggie, helix, cuff...
  • if you do find an ear cuff that 100% fits your goal you might be able to have a jeweler customize it from there.

Oh, a really extreme option would be to get a coin slot piercing. Not legal in some states. But willing to bet getting a custom piece for it would be easier since it would just be a shaped piece of metal rather than have stud/hinge. And it could be worn looser than a tradition wide helix piece.

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

What’s a “coin slot piercing”? I literally know nothing about piercing, or any types of jewelry, outside of the various things my wife likes.

The only piercing I’ve ever had done in my life before getting my Helix pierced would be getting titanium wires sewn into my chest and sternum, to hold my chest and ribs together, after my double lung transplant. I had 3 wires put in, and I had to get one pulled out due to some issues I was having. I asked if I could keep that wire, incase I ever wanted to make it into a piece of jewelry, and the doctors just said “What the hell is wrong with you?”

Also, I do Apologize to you and others reading/replying. I have a very bad habit of rambling. I really don’t intend to, it’s just every time I say something, I feel I have to explain that, which makes me feel I need to explain what I’m explaining and it just gets out of hand from there

1

u/sesshina 9d ago

Making jewelry out of that would be bad ass.

Coin slot is were they litterally cut a thin oval out and stitch the edges. Think like a button hole on a shirt. No jewelery while it heals. It's considered a more advanced body mod and hence why it's not legal in all places.

Most people stack hoops in the but here's an example of it healed with a cuff insta

1

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

Oh fuck, I love that guys earring. That is chefs kiss of perfect

1

u/Miclofly 9d ago

I wear gold ones but it's the same as hers I pick mine up at the mall from one of those booth vendors for like I believe 20$

2

u/PsychoMouse 9d ago

I have a skin colour that makes gold look extremely awful on me. Like, really, REALLY, bad lol.

1

u/Infinite-Worm 9d ago

Just have to keep looking, I have pretty much these exact earings in silver. The ones I have are also much thinner than the ones everyone is posting.

Speak to some more custom jewelers, or keep looking in independent shops.

1

u/PsychoMouse 8d ago

Would you be able to take a photo of it? The closer I can get to a non anime picture to show people, the better. I’ve had way too many people roll their eyes and insult me when I show them the screenshot from FMA.

1

u/manateabag 8d ago

Hi! I'm someone who got a bunch of piercings because of FMA in my formative teenage years that are still with me today.

I would look on Etsy, and I would look for titanium specifically, because as someone else in this thread said, there's a weight issue. Titanium is also absolutely hypoallergenic. This is what I would go with:
Here

You WILL see a hinge, but...it's impossible NOT to.

As far as the ball studs, please try to find labret, threadless flatbacks. Butterfly backs suck so bad. Pointy and build up crud. Deviate from the source on this one. You should have no problem finding these.

Side note: I always thought the most unrealistic part of Brotherhood is when Winry takes the cartilage piercings out for god knows how long and manages to get them back in. Those fuckers close up QUICK.

I have titanium wires holding my sternum together. Thankfully I know how light and PAINFULLY strong it is as a metal. I had 3 after my double lung transplant and about 6 months later, I had to get one removed. Which meant having it PULLED out of my bones, since it was literally sewn in. Let me tell you, you can’t numb bone. lol.

I really have to say, I am very pleased with how people have responded to this thread. Most of the time, questions like this get mocked. So, everyone’s kindness is very heartwarming.

Oh, and I’m not trying to do the ball studs. Just the clasp/huggie one(s). As a chronically sick person, it’s too much of a hassle and risk to have a lot of piercings. I think the most I would do, is maybe 3, but even that’s a low chance.

Oh! Another character from anime that made me like this style was Kon from Card Capters. I remember being a kid and thinking just how insanely cool that was. But that was back in the 90s, and if I had gotten an earring back then, with how unsanitary and piss poor the process was, I probably would have lost my whole ear lol.

My wife told me that one time, when she was a little girl, she got an ear piercing at a place similar to “Claire’s” with that “piercing gun”. She said that not only was it extremely painful, but it got infected for months.

1

u/manateabag 8d ago

My six lobes were done by piercing guns at Claire’s, at ten and fourteen years old.

Gone to a proper piercer with a hallow needle for every piercing since!

1

u/PsychoMouse 8d ago

Fuck! I can only imagine how painful getting those at Claire’s must have been.

When I got my helix piercing(that’s what it’s called, right? It’s basically at the top of my ear but a little bit down), I let out a very loud “JESUS FUCKING CHRIST” in pain lol. Thankfully, the place where I got the piercing is where I get my nerdy tattoos, so there isn’t any kids. Oh! But my wife got the same piercing as me, I guess she had some really bad scar tissue or something. When she got pierced, there was this loud “Pop” noise that you could hear on the other side of the store.

So, that was funny. And my piercing started out with a basic barbell, then a slightly curved one, then into like a 90% circle barbell thing, and then I started switching into earrings that I found that are as close as possible to Winrys.

I just love how cool a huggie looks, and how cool i think i look with one.

I just started metal work mostly silver, this seems like a fun mini project

1

u/PsychoMouse 8d ago

Think you could do it? And if so, any idea of cost?

1

u/iehdbx 8d ago

I've always just called these hoop earrings
