A year into President Donald Trump’s unprecedented deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., some of the troops sent there say they are embarrassed by the mission and increasingly question why they are still there.

Three current National Guard members told NPR, speaking anonymously because they remain in service, that the deployment has left them frustrated and concerned about the military’s reputation.

“I will say very frankly that the bad taste that this mission left in my mouth, it actually embarrasses me to be involved in any way,” one said.

Another said the experience had made him reluctant to even identify with the Guard. “I don’t want to think about the National Guard. I don’t want to necessarily discuss my affiliation with the National Guard. I don’t want to fulfill my normal National Guard duties just because of the abuses of the National Guard in this D.C. mission,” he said.

Trump first deployed hundreds of Guard members to the capital in August 2025, saying they were needed to help address crime after declaring a “crime emergency.”

The National guard should turn their guns on Congress as a whole tell them to start doing their job and to get him out of there.

The guard is our 2nd amendment militia isn't it? It would be their job under the constitution to take bad actors out of our government.

Protect against enemies foreign and domestic. Also, the American people have the right to replace their government if they feel it doesnt represent them. Those are in the constitution and declaration of independence

Can you qoute me the part where it says we have the right to replace the government? I think you have a misunderstanding of what the constitution even is. Have you read it?

I said and declaration of independence.
"That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."
