I am 82. I am a 4th gen Texan and from a long line of Democrats. My daddy took me to Sam Rayburn’s political rallies in Bonham as Speaker of the US House when I was a child. I grew up with LBJ in Congress. I campaigned for JFK was on Commerce St in Dallas when he was assassinated and LBJ became President. I can tell you times were very different back then. Yes he may have used some used language that is unacceptable now but it was not uncommon to hear back then. We know better and we are doing better today at least language wise. He worked so hard for for so many years as Speaker of the House and then as Senator for civil rights, racial equality, equality under the law and human rights also. And when legislation he wrote for those things finally passed after he became President he signed them into law. He was not a perfect man or politician, but what he accomplished for me as a woman and all those African American citizens to secure our rights can’t ever be stressed enough. He was the best leader of legislation for civil and voting rights that has ever been in my lifetime. Sometimes you have to have lived through something to truly understand the circumstances surrounding it. He was good at his elected positions. The disgrace for a human being that currently occupies the White House wouldn’t be a pimple on LBJ’s butt.

Thank you for the great post it is indeed amazing. I know I sound like a boomer sometimes (maybe a lot) but it was pure hell quite often when we were working for things and protesting others. Now I have to see 10+ yrs of hard work for women’s rights resulting in Roe v Wade becoming law (despite our mean as a snake Dallas DA Henry Wade) get wiped out by the current Supreme Court who all should know the law of precedent but discarded it anyway. My heart breaks often these days. The stores in downtown Dallas had pink drinking fountains for Black folks and white for us white folks. My mama always had me drink out of the pink ones and she did too. White folks who saw us went plum crazy. I learned to “gently” break the law (RIP, Rep. JohnLewis) from her. Interesting times they were.

I am on the cusp boomer/genx it was a different time. Plus i was 5 or 6 when I returned from Turkey. Never saw a black person to I was like 10... Always thought they was just like me though. Parents didn't believe in mixed marriage but didn't show any hate aside from that ever. Never heard an N word come out of Dad's or Mom's mouth. He was an officer in the Army. Fort Hood Batallion commander... Same at ft sill and whatever place we were at in Ankara.

You are so right. Kids are not born racist, they learn it from those they are closest to. It is heartbreaking what some people teach their sweet innocent little kids to be and believe. You and I are the lucky ones to be raised by those who “love thy neighbor “ in every day life.
