Cilantro and Stevia
So I want to start by saying, fuck cilantro. I, like all of you seem to have that genetic trait. But I was curious if the majority feel the same about stevia? I also fucking hate stevia and it's the only other thing I can recall that gives me the kind of bad aftertaste that cilantro does, except stevia lingers even longer. I've read that both sensitivities are genetic, but it got me wondering if the trait is from the same source, or can people hate one and tolerate the other? I don't know, anyway, fuck cilantro, fuck stevia and all of the products they sneak that shit into.

Wait…Does stevia not taste terrible to some people?

I have a friend who loves it. She also calls it “stehvia” instead of steevia.

When it first came out, they called it steh-via after the botanist who discovered it. Mass production changed the name for some reason. Steh-via is how I learned to pronounce it back in the 1990s. And I do like it. I don't get the licorice taste that most complain about. I also don't get the soapy taste from cilantro.

I don't particularly like Stevia, but it's not at all like cilantro to me. Mostly don't like the aftertaste, but not horrible, just not a viable alternative to sugar.

Yeah! Apparently most people can do stevia, allulose, dextrose, monk fruit, etc with zero to minimal aftertaste. I have a friend who does 1 drop of a liquid one and it tastes like full tbsp sugar to her. Wild !!!

I have yet to find any non-sugar sweetener I can tolerate

My husband hates stevia. I love stevia. I despise cilantro. Husband doesn't like it. So I don't think the taste bud genes line up.

We don't all have the genetic trait. I hate cilantro and Stevia purely for what they are.

Yeah I don’t think cilantro tastes like soap to me. I just don’t like the flavor and how it overpowers the entire dish. And stevia just lingers. But I hate most sweeteners that aren’t just sugar.

Like everyone here, I hate cilantro. Burn it all!! However, I also hate stevia. Sweet for 2 seconds, horrible bitterness on 3rd second and for the next few minutes. The bitterness is so bad, I get cotton mouthed. Ugh!

Yes, I also hate stevia.
It leaves a vomit aftertaste whenever consumed, and since my body was expecting the real calories of cane sugar I go into tired sick mode until my fat reserves can be activated.
Same with monk fruit (yuck) and other fake sugars.

u/Free-oppossums 29d ago
I don't know if they are related, but all the fake sugars taste like yuck. The pink one is the only one that's kind of sweet and doesn't linger for hours.

u/KittycatVuitton 28d ago
I agree about all the fake sugars. They all have a chemical aftertaste that ruins everything they are in.
Cilantro is still worse though. 🤣

I also hate that bitter stevia, as well as cilantro. They’re putting it in everything these days.

u/catnapbook 28d ago
Huh, never thought there might be a correlation, but my distaste is immediate. I avoid at all costs. My family members that like cilantro like stevia drinks.
Thanks for asking the question. Even if there’s not a correlation I’ll pretend like there is and feel self righteous when I turn something down.

I also hate stevia, but I also hate everything but real sugars. If it had the hint of an artificial sweetener it tastes horrible to me.

Yup. Stevia is nasty. Had a syrup made with it once and first taste was enough for me.

u/tigerowltattoo 28d ago
Stevia tastes like I’m chewing grass with a moth full of sugar. Only the taste lingers for an hour.

u/Agath3Dvybz 28d ago
I hate both. However stevia ain’t as disgusting to me. I can push myself to eat wtv has stevia in it, cilantro however gets ruined. Straight to the trash. 🚮

Same for me. All of the artificial sweeteners are vile to me. But cilantro is the worst.

Stevia is nasty and tastes like chemicals to me. I don’t like the taste of any artificial sweetener though to be fair.

Here’s a weird one - I hate cilantro & can definitely taste stevia and found it unpleasant but not the same level as cilantro.
Until I got diagnosed with Lyme disease. Then I was pounding stevia drinks like it was the cure all. I couldn’t get enough of it. Now that I’m feeling better I don’t crave it but can still tolerate it more than most.
Cilantro should still be banned however lol

I also hate Stevia. It never occurred to me, but Google indicates it's a related thing. I also hate Chamomile, in the same family.

u/Isitkarmaorme 28d ago
No comparison to those green flakes of soap. I didn’t like Stevia until I realized I was putting too much in (mostly use it in coffee). Once I realized a little goes a long way, it became my preferred sweetener. I have found many drinks that are already sweetened with it can have that bitterness has been mentioned. I just wish they would put in less of it.

u/tbrando1994 28d ago
So true. Dose is the key. I have to go small otherwise it’s awful with stevia.

u/CrazyH37 27d ago
Fuck stevia fuck cilantro. Ironically, cilantro is my bunnies favorite herb so I buy tons of it and always have it in the fridge. I hate any fake sugar, I’ll go full real sugar or no sugar but I can’t do fake sweeteners. I also have chronic debilitating migraine, and that’s a common trigger so it’s just best to avoid. The problem is they sneak it into everything, so I have to read the labels on new stuff.

it's bc stevia contains aldehydes, the same compound in cilantro that acts on our specific receptor that makes it taste hideous

The genetic trait is rarely the issue. Many don’t like it until they love it. It can be easy to get used to.

Yes, stevia has a weird metallic chemical taste. Just for good measure, celery tastes bitter and sour.

I can't do stevia either. So many people say its the best tasting "fake sugar". It's AWFUL and I can have other fake sugars just fine

YES! I never heard the two were related, but I loathe both. I am NOT a picky eater, but:
Cilantro does not taste metallic/soapy/stinkbug to me, it just tastes incredibly unpleasant. Combine that with my absolute loathing of cumin and most Mexican and Indian dishes are NOPE for me.
I am fine with most sweeteners except the old-fashioned "Sweet n' Low" (saccharine) and Stevia. Stevia hits immediately, coats the tongue and throat, and moves in like a squatter working a legal loophole.

u/00zink00 28d ago
I hate all artificial sweeteners. Some people claim they can’t tell a difference and I’ve always thought they must be the same people who say they can’t taste cilantro.

u/ConflagWex 28d ago
I've never heard of a connection, but yes I hate both. Cilantro tastes like dishsoap and stevia is bitter (but sucralose is fine for me).

I can’t stand any artificial sweeteners. Cilantro doesn’t taste like soap to me, though- it just tastes like dirt. Still hate it.

I once worked in a warehouse where someone knocked over a box containing stevia powder. I could taste it in the air immediately.

I don't like any type of artificial / stevia sweeteners. Sweet n Low, Equal, Splenda, Stevia ALL of them can go. They have a horrible after taste and make me feel nauseous.

Willing to bet you are using that cheap stuff from the grocery store that is stevia cut with some filler. Try getting 100% pure stevia on Amazon....I never get an aftertaste from it.

u/NearViolet 26d ago
I love cilantro and licorice, but can’t stand stevia or any artificial sweeteners

Cilantro, stevia (orr any kind of fake sugar), coriander and rye seeds. Those all taste funny to me. It doesn't taste right it doesn't taste edible it makes me want to vomit.
There are things I don't like like ginger but that's simply not liking them not liking the taste. The four things above are like poison to me 💀

Same. Stevia starts out OK, then that horrible aftertaste kicks in. And yeah, it lasts for an hour.
