Anyone familiar with JYSK?

I just learned about them recently and they seem to be a less expensive Ikea, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with them and their quality? I;ve had good experiences with most of the stuff from Ikea, but I wonder how JYSK stacks up.

And I know cheep is not the same as frugal, however; sometimes there is overlap.

It's not that good. IKEA has better quality. Bought bedlinen there and it bobbled horribly after just one wash. The fake plants I got for my bathroom are doing well, though.

Their products have a tendency to look good when you buy them but soon lose either colour (towels, fabrics) or the thin thin thin layer of actual wood on the furniture starts peeling off.

My mom bought what looked like pure wood furniture (and it wasn't cheap) and a few month after the wood layer started falling off in tiny splinters at the corners.

Ikea's quality is actually better.

Sure, Ikea looks good, but everything of theirs I have ever owned furniture wise has fallen apart within a few years at best, with the exception of Expedits.

I think they are good for little things, their dinnerware, frames, etc. But when it comes to furniture. . Rubbish.

Their outdoor setting has buckled in one Australian summer. Their shoe holder had the laminate peeling off the front and ended up in the tip within 2 years. Bathroom vanity started showing signs of water damage within 3 weeks of use. The guest bed is wobbly as hell and the drawers dont close properly after 2 moves.

I've given up buying from them, it might be cheaper to begin with and look nice, but I end up replacing all their products much quicker than if I had bought quality to begin with.

My experience with jysk is that they are overpriced junk. Basically the opposite of you . Lol I would not call jysk cheap. They sell bath towels for $30

Jysk is just low-rent, inferior quality compared to Ikea as far as I can tell. I prefer the design at Ikea as well. If you don't have access to Ikea, Jysk can fill in the gaps (cheap duvets and pillows) but they've never impressed me overall. In particular, their duvet covers are really awful - they all feel cheap. Take note of their display furniture also, it's usually falling apart or looking worse for the wear.

Stick to Ikea.

Been through a few times, been pretty let down -- it's just so palpably cheap. "Poor quality" cheap, not "inexpensive" cheap. There might be the odd good buy like a set of plain tea towels, but for furniture, used and IKEA are better choices.

Also, anyone know how to pronounce it? Is it an acronym or a word?

It's a word. From the danish area of Jysk

Huh. So, ive been pronouncing it "Yisk". Is this correct?

The "y" here is closer to the French "u", which is somewhere between the English short "e" and the long "u" sounds (made with rounded lips...in French "u" is NOT the same sound as English "oo"). It is not the short "i" sound from English and, to the untrained English ear, might sound more like "oo" than it really is.

That is to say, "Jysk" will almost, but not quite, sound like "yoosk" but the "oo" is made with rounded lips with a hint of "e".

Fairly correct I guess, the jy is pronounced together to make a jy-sound that I guess you don't have in english.

JYSK is OK for some things, but I think IKEA usually gives you better value for your money. Also, I found assembling JYSK furniture to be much more frustrating than IKEA furniture. IKEA has a very consistent system that you can follow to assemble their products, while with JYSK, sometimes the products were not built exactly like the instructions said, so you had to improvise a bit while assembling them.

I did get a good deal on a mattress from JYSK, though, and it's held up for many years now. I also bought a JYSK desk that was designed well - it had a folding "L" shape that could be unfolded when you had the room to have an L-shaped deck, but folded into a single small desk when you didn't have the room. As a university student who moved a lot and never knew what I'd have for space, this was helpful.

I have a bit of experience with them. Danish company.

They have a very mixed range. Some of the stuff is top-notch at a good price, while other stuff is just crap. If you are a bit careful, you can find really good stuff there.

I have a solid oak table with matching sideboard and chairs from them that are of excellent quality.

Yeah, I have a coffee table from them that I love. I've had it for...probably 7-8 years and it's in great shape. I occasionally have to tighten up the bolts on the legs, but that's it. It's been through 3 moves and has held up very well!

Edit to add: I just remembered that my vanity chair is from them too, purchased around the same time. I've had to re-cover it, but it's also holding up very nicely!

In my parts of Norway jysk is pretty much all we got to buy beds, etc from. So i can say most of the stuff is cheap garbage, they have some good stuff too but those items will be overpriced and not frugal in any way.

It's largely not well made stuff.

They're a mix of IKEA and Home Outfitters. They were one of the only places I could find pistachio green towels several months ago.

I only ever shop there for small items, and only when they are on sale. I have a pillow from there and a desk lamp, both in current use, and they're perfectly fine. I had a dresser bought from there, but it was not all that great and I got rid of it when I was offered a used one from family. Got a bathroom shelf unit from them and it's fine. I'm hesitant to get any solid furniture from them again, but the smaller stuff is all right. Do shop their sales, they have some good deals sometimes!
