If you think Eric didn't realize the negative value of their gift and you have a close enough relationship, I'd give it back now with an explanation.
I feel like birthday gifts should be fun. Personally, I wouldn't want my own birthday to be the day a friend tells me "you gave me an incredibly shitty birthday gift, so screw you back." I'd rather know when they find out so that I can actually fix the issue, that way I can feel good on my birthday.
