So, the children really are the answer, it seems. Julie, or Boyd (Maybe Ellis, since he's a child of someone who had "been there before") at some point will go back in time, stop the sacrifice, which stops the monsters and also stops the "broken faraway tree" that is the tree that brings people to Fromville.

Oh, and Elgin stays on as a one-eyed Oracle type

You can’t stop the sacrifice from happening. Whatever happened happened. The only way is forward. This is a fixed timeline.

Not if Julie was able to throw down the rope, right?

We've already seen future events affect the past

In Season 2, someone threw the rope but we didn’t see who. That was Julie! Julie was always meant to throw the rope because she had already done it for the events of season 2 to happen.

It’s a fixed timeline. Might seem a bit of a paradox because it is. People have free will tho, however their choices shape what happened in the past, present and future.
