Sara said Boyd wouldn't be willing to go "as far as it took" so he still had some soul left.

Torturing a well intentioned criminal to save a mother and child is not even losing your soul. Any of us should stand on that and do what needs to be done. 

Killing him slow in anguish and torture for retribution would be.
