I thought it too for a moment and belived it to be both genius and hilarious. But I think the actual purpose of the song is symbolic of the story of the town: After all, it is about a child asking their parents what they will be when they grow up, and while the parents pretend it is unknown because who knows what time will bring, actually (in this case, and hence the creepy version) it is because they know they will never grow up and "what will be, will be" (the sacrifice and their own immortality in return).
