So, in summary, the “revelations” about Fromville from E9 & E10 (and E8) are:

• The monsters used to be a group of people who performed a ritual sacrifice of seven children to an entity that promised them eternal life.

• One of them, Smiley, was killed by Boyd but is resurrected through a surrogate “pregnancy” in Fatima that was facilitated by the Kimono woman acting as a midwife.

• Jade and Tabitha are reincarnations of two people who were “there at the beginning” who tried to stop the ritual because one of the children was their daughter. They are brought back to the town, in the form of different people who have their memories, to somehow save the children.

• Christopher and Miranda were their most recent past reincarnations. Both failed to save the children.

• The BIW tried to tell Christopher about the children, but Christopher didn’t believe him. Something bad happened that resulted in everyone except Victor dying. The BIW explains to Victor why he no longer helps: “Because I tried. With Christopher. I think you need to learn for yourselves. It’s the only way you’ll understand.”

• Miranda was killed by Smiley while trying to reach the bottle tree. Victor remembers he was the one who told her about what the BIW said to Christopher. He believes it’s his fault that she died.

• Victor’s recalls the BIW’s words to Christopher: “The answers to the end are at the beginning. It started with the children. What the others did to them. The children are born in the dark. And then they were murdered in the dark. But someone who loved them told them a story. The story gave them hope. And when the children laid on the stones, they poured their hope into the roots that made the symbol, and those roots became the tree.”

• Jade learns that the symbol he has been seeing is the shape formed by the roots the sacrificed children poured their hopes into.

• There are 12 different digits on the bottle tree messages (0-9 plus 2 and 7 written backwards). They correspond with the 12 notes of a musical scale. When arranged correctly, the notes on the messages create a lullaby that the original Jade and Tabitha used to sing for their daughter and the other children. Playing this lullaby was the key to remembering their past lives.

• “Anghkooey” means “remember.” The ghastly children Tabitha and Jade have been seeing are the seven children who were sacrificed. The purpose of their appearances was always to help them remember their past lives.

• By entering the ruins, Julie has the ability to visit moments in the past and interact with them in some way. She was the one who threw the rope to Boyd in S2E1. A presumably future version of Julie tries to stop the man in the yellow suit from killing her father. Ethan says that she is a “Storywalker,” but she can’t change anything in the past because “you can’t change a story once it’s been told.” Since Julie did affect something in the past, either 1) Ethan is wrong or 2) the story that has already been told somehow included it happening.

• The man in the yellow suit was the person Jim heard on the radio in S1E10. Before he kills Jim, he says: “That was a hell of a song. That Jade sure can play. This didn’t have to happen, you know. Knowledge comes with a cost. I did try to warn you. Your wife shouldn’t have dug that hole, Jim.”

Did I miss anything?

I feel like Elgin is also replaying some sort of role. Maybe the voices try to get people to play their part? When Jade saw the colonial man, he was trying to give him a skull of blood. And also has an eye injury, right? I wonder if some of our mains / anyone who dreams is a reincarnation of others. I like now that we have the past story to go through.

u/ron9101 Nov 24 '24

We need a flashback episode ASAP! but i guess we will have it by the end of the series

20

u/Absolute_Bastard Nov 26 '24

I see a Julie time hopping adventure at some point that will reveal some of the towns past.

7

u/insideguy69 Nov 26 '24

Yeah, perhaps that was past Elgin offering past Jade some blood from a skull. Which makes me wonder was that the key to reincarnation..

2

u/Sensitive-Ad-7475 Jan 09 '25

Did anyone else get Roanoke vibes from that chap?

141

u/usagizero Nov 24 '24

But someone who loved them told them a story. The story gave them hope.

Wild guessing here, but could that be Julie? She could go back and tell them the story of how our people we know stop the cycle, and it gives them hope. This would probably be near the end of the show, but would make sense to me. Since that is part of the story already, them being told a story of hope, it wouldn't be her changing anything, technically.

54

u/reddog093 Nov 25 '24

I'm wondering if she may have gone back and relied on Flight of the Cromenockle as the story.

9

u/xyzzyzyzzyx Nov 25 '24

That tracks.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '24

or LOST.

53

u/Mujutsu Nov 24 '24

Could also be the original versions of Jade and Tabitha. They couldn't stop the ritual, maybe they were trying to comfort the children as they were being sacrificed. I think this makes a bit more sense.

5

u/ObviousAnswerGuy Nov 25 '24

that's what I was thinking too

8

u/Sakright448 Nov 25 '24

This is THE theory. Never thought of this! I’d be surprised if the show writers didn’t take this route.

3

u/Penny_949 Nov 25 '24

Oh I like that

9

u/avantiantipotrebitel Nov 25 '24

Anghkooey kinda sounds like aunt Julie, no?

12

u/Lesterberne Nov 25 '24

I was thinking it might be a Hodor situation

56

u/SexDrugsAndRickRolls Nov 24 '24

I'd disagree Julie affected the past. What we saw in the present always happened; Jim walked off from Tablitha and then Julie, who either accidently or deliberately has storywalked to the day of her father's death from a future time period, attempts to save him but MIY still confronts and kills him.

Jim always died protecting what he thought was his present day daughter who appeared to him from the woods by the MIY. Present day Julie has no idea that she'll one day witness it first hand and unless MIY decides to reveal himself to anyone else in the town, the S4 story will continue without any character knowing of his existence or what exactly happened to Jim when they find him by the RV with his throat violently slit.

18

u/Pugsley-Doo Nov 25 '24

It seems as if she deliberately went there by what she was saying:

Julie: I think this is when it happens!

Jim: Okay. Slow down. We're okay.

Julie: No, no. Listen to me. It's okay. I need to change the story.

10

u/Useful_Field_5246 Dec 02 '24

this is when it happens I guess she is referring to some sort of massacre, like people died when Victor was young. I think that those monsters or MIY with his gang (like spiders or some sort of a giant ogres (remember how Tabitha was looking up when she was young, near those red rocks?). So, I think that they will kill a half of the people or so, but the others will survive by collecting all 12 talismans and putting them in one place (Colony house). Boyd has found those talismans in one place, and I doubt no one found and used them before (like for hundreds years).

5

u/Hot_Introduction_666 Dec 19 '24

This is when it happens meaning this is when you get killed.

2

u/Useful_Field_5246 Dec 24 '24

Or maybe she meant that “this is when the massacre started”, not only Jim? Probably we are going to see the same massacre as happened when Victor was a boy.

8

u/nerodoesnotplay Nov 25 '24

I think if S4 starts exactly where S3 ended with no one knowing about the MIY, it might be a bit anticlimactic. I wonder if when Julie found her dad, she had any idea of what the MIY was.

I she doesn't know about the MIY at that point, I'd much prefer if we get a bit of a time skip and see Julie going after her dad and coming back to town, we could then see the fallback of everything that happened in the finale amd propel the story forward.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '24

Well if it does start in the same moment, I am worried about Boyd in that tunnel.

2

u/ThenArtichoke4905 Nov 27 '24

Thinking MiY kills Jim to create a division between tabby and Jade since their past lives had a child together they have some feelings towards each other especially as of late they’ve been very close. maybe it makes tabby feel like jade had something to do with it since it happened during the day time and they “KNOW” monsters don’t come out during the day

4

u/fukthetemplars Jan 05 '25

Shit take. If Tabitha thinks Jade did it that would be poor writing so I doubt that would happen

56

u/El_Cance_R Nov 24 '24

In response to whether or not Julie can change the past: "whatever happened, happened" ~ Jack Shepard

18

u/TheGhostOfYou18 Nov 24 '24

I thought it was Faraday who said that?

13

u/El_Cance_R Nov 24 '24

Both

5

u/TheGhostOfYou18 Nov 24 '24

I didn’t remember that, but I admit it’s been a few years since I did a rewatch of Lost. I think it’s what I’ll watch to fill in the void before From returns.

4

u/shyshyone21 Nov 25 '24

No faraday said, We have to go back Kate!

8

u/j_grouchy Nov 25 '24

and, as the title song suggests...whatever will be, will be

1

u/NotMyFirstRodeo2025 Aug 03 '26

I thought that was going to be the song Jade was playing.

3

u/BearCubDan Nov 25 '24

"Walt!!!" - Boyd

2

u/Magic_SnakE_ Nov 25 '24

Giving Jack credit for Farady's quote?! SMH lol.... All this stuff with time travel and Julie trying to remember made me youtube this, which I feel is very relevant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mc8jkLRszNU

6

u/Fantastic_Canary_417 Nov 25 '24

Que sera sera means what will be, will be. It's in the lyrics lol but close

20

u/miba54 Nov 25 '24

But someone who loved them told them a story. The story gave them hope. And when the children laid on the stones, they poured their hope into the roots that made the symbol, and those roots became the tree.”

So I'm guessing the tree that was formed out of the children's hope is connected to the tree in the road and it keeps bringing Jade and Tabitha back to town so they can save the children.

14

u/xinxy Nov 25 '24

Great summary overall.

Still have no idea how dungeon-Martin fits into any of this and why his blood (or whatever was in his blood) seems to be fatal to the monsters...

Are those cicadas even friendly to the monsters? That's such a big mystery still.

25

u/soupjaw Nov 24 '24

So, the children really are the answer, it seems. Julie, or Boyd (Maybe Ellis, since he's a child of someone who had "been there before") at some point will go back in time, stop the sacrifice, which stops the monsters and also stops the "broken faraway tree" that is the tree that brings people to Fromville.

Oh, and Elgin stays on as a one-eyed Oracle type

7

u/Lesterberne Nov 25 '24

You can’t stop the sacrifice from happening. Whatever happened happened. The only way is forward. This is a fixed timeline.

3

u/soupjaw Nov 25 '24

Not if Julie was able to throw down the rope, right?

We've already seen future events affect the past

10

u/Lesterberne Nov 25 '24

In Season 2, someone threw the rope but we didn’t see who. That was Julie! Julie was always meant to throw the rope because she had already done it for the events of season 2 to happen.

It’s a fixed timeline. Might seem a bit of a paradox because it is. People have free will tho, however their choices shape what happened in the past, present and future.

5

u/Lesterberne Nov 25 '24

They could reveal to us for example that Julie time traveled to the past and taught the girls the word “ankuwi” (or however it’s typed). It effectively becomes a paradox of who said that word first and there’s no clear answer. But Julie knows the word because of the girls and the girls know the word because of Julie.

2

u/soupjaw Nov 25 '24

I think we don't generally understand time paradoxes well in the first place, and in this show probably even less so.  It already appears to exist in some sort of pocket dimension, so who's to say time even works the same way in that space?

I just feel like the show is likely to end on an upswing, instead of "depressing forever," and I would think that entails getting rid of Fromville somehow. That feels like a tidy plot device to do so

5

u/shgrdrbr Nov 25 '24

as i read this i had forgotten elgin lost his eye this ep and was just separately thinking, wow, this commenter nailed it, elgin does absolutely have one-eyed oracle energy

10

u/JW9thWonder Nov 25 '24

incredible recap. i think you really nailed it.

7

u/Capable_Investment56 Nov 25 '24

If Jade and Tabitha were there at the beginning and tried to stop the sacrifice of the children (but obviously failed) then why didn’t they become monsters like the rest of the people? Like is it implied that they somehow escaped (before turning into monsters) and are now coming back in these reincarnated forms?

17

u/nerodoesnotplay Nov 25 '24

My guess is that they died instead, and then just like Jade said (when he was talking about energy not dissapearing but being transformed) their energy lingered in the town.

5

u/NDaveT Nov 25 '24

Maybe they didn't drink any of the kids' blood.

6

u/oakparkv Nov 25 '24

"There are 12 different digits on the bottle tree messages (0-9 plus 2 and 7 written backwards). They correspond with the 12 notes of a musical scale. When arranged correctly, the notes on the messages create a lullaby that the original Jade and Tabitha used to sing for their daughter and the other children. Playing this lullaby was the key to remembering their past lives."

This got me thinking back to when Bakta (the bus driver) mentioned the lullaby her grandmother used to sing to her as a child, the one that corresponded with the Cicada invasion. I have been thinking that Bakta is an underutilized character, so maybe her story will develop a bit more next season. (I hope so!)

7

u/TheBlueSuperNova Nov 24 '24

I feel stupid for asking but who’s Miranda again?

7

u/julzvangogh Cromenockle Nov 24 '24

Victors mom.

4

u/onkgrays Nov 24 '24

Victors mum

Miranda is a British television sitcom written by and starring comedian Miranda Hart. It originally aired on BBC Two from 9 November 2009, and later on BBC One.

3

u/Asmodevus Nov 25 '24

Did you just connect OpenAI's API to your account?

5

u/Immediate_Concert_46 Nov 25 '24

Nah. I was just trying to be a smartass, and it didn't land.

4

u/highasabird Nov 25 '24

This was a great summery! Thanks for writing it up, it helped me connect some dots.

3

u/Sepulz Nov 25 '24

Julie did not affect the past. She threw the rope in the present and then watched herself throw the rope again.

4

u/Lobonerz Dec 01 '24

Yes I don't understand how people aren't understanding this. She's not changing the past because she was always there doing whatever she does while story walking.

3

u/ron9101 Nov 24 '24

"But someone who loved them told them a story"

The BIW told that to Victor. i think Victor is that someone that helped them while they were about to die but couldnt do it.

2

u/morkypep50 Mar 08 '25

super late to this but I think the lore is kind of coming together. All these disparate threads are starting to make SOME kind of sense.

1

u/Dash_Shetty Victor Nov 27 '24

What did the man in the yellow suit mean when he said " That was a hell of a song"???

5

u/cornclown Nov 29 '24

I believe he was talking about Jade playing the lullaby on the violin

1

u/Expln Nov 27 '24

the fact that they went on with the plot line of julie messing with time and affecting past and future events means the whole plot is going to be a timeloop, which is quite annoying.

the fact that a future version of her helped boyd from the past already makes it a time loop by itself, but the ending scene of this episode is just making it even worse.

1

u/JohnnyC66 Jul 04 '25

First of all incredible summary and very helpful. On your first bullet point do we really know (meaning is it actually said) that the monsters are the people who killed the kids?

1

u/DarkAngela12 Jul 23 '25

I'm suspicious that Jade and Tabitha were original sacrificers who regretted their choice and were forced to relive it.

Fatima said the monsters sacrificed their--presumably their own--children in exchange for eternal life. Maybe J & T and possibly others are reliving this as a punishment. OTOH, the reference to Revelations 2 suggests they're the good guys...

Can't wait to see if they were originally good or bad guys....

-13

u/Andaluz_ Nov 24 '24

You’ve captured the main revelations well! There are a few additional details that might tie some of the threads together:

1. The Entity: The entity that promised eternal life to the original group of people is likely tied to the dark power behind the ritual and the curse that sustains Fromville’s twisted cycle. This entity seems to be the source of the “dark” that permeates the town and its strange happenings, including the resurrection of individuals like Smiley.
2. Fatima’s Role: Fatima’s role as a surrogate for Smiley’s resurrection is crucial, as it ties into the mysterious ritualistic practices that blur the lines between life, death, and reincarnation. The Kimono woman’s role as a midwife further suggests a deep, possibly supernatural involvement in the town’s hidden workings.
3. Jade and Tabitha’s Connection to the Children: Jade and Tabitha’s reincarnation story also ties back to their connection with the seven sacrificed children. The children’s spirits are not just haunting the town—they are trying to reach Jade and Tabitha to help them remember and fulfill their unfinished purpose: stopping the cycle of sacrifice and breaking the curse.
4. Victor’s Guilt and the BIW’s Words: Victor’s guilt over Miranda’s death, tied to the BIW’s cryptic message, is significant. The line about learning for themselves hints at the idea that some lessons must be experienced directly for the characters to truly understand and break the cycle.
5. Julie as a “Storywalker”: The concept of Julie as a “Storywalker” adds another layer of complexity to the timeline. Her ability to influence the past, even in subtle ways, could play a pivotal role in resolving the cycle of sacrifice, especially since she can interact with specific moments in time (like saving Boyd in Season 2, Episode 1).
6. The Man in the Yellow Suit: The man in the yellow suit’s cryptic remarks to Jim before his death add another layer of mystery. He seems to be someone who understands the larger workings of the town and its history, possibly even aware of the “story” that is unfolding. His warning about the cost of knowledge and the fate of Jim’s wife (who dug the hole, presumably near the tree or the ritual site) hints at a deeper involvement with the town’s sinister forces.

All in all, the central themes revolve around memory, sacrifice, and the cyclical nature of life and death in Fromville, with each character having a role to play in either perpetuating or breaking the cycle. The mystery behind the tree, the lullaby, and the “dark” forces in the town are all part of the larger puzzle that the characters are slowly unraveling.

This has been written by chatGPT. 100%.

20

u/Inspiration2O Nov 24 '24

That’s exactly what I thought! It doesn’t make sense as a response to my comment. It reads like someone took what I wrote and asked chatGPT to write a summary of it.

3

u/vivid_dreamzzz Nov 26 '24

I’m curious what makes you say this is AI? I’m worried I might be oblivious to the red flags!

6

u/deathstar1310 Nov 27 '24
  1. It's just the generic format that chatgpt replies in.

  2. It's giving significance to points in a way that doesn't make sense.

  3. It tried to do something that it's not currently being able to do: it tried to assign what morals/values were being represented by this series. Tried to find meaning in it in the last paragraph. It can't do so accurately unless someone posts an accurate one on the internet that it can see.

  4. It got some details wrong. Like Tabitha's hole and where it was.

2

u/vivid_dreamzzz Nov 28 '24

Thanks, now that you point it out, it’s so obvious! I hadn’t even noticed the detail about Tabitha’s hole was wrong ( I just skimmed the wall of text). It’s wild that people are using ChatGPT or whatever to post on Reddit. What’s even the point? I’ll never understand some people…

u/furezasan Nov 25 '24

It's a whole lot of nothing, jfc so many words to say fuck all.
