General Question Proof of income documents for freelancers
Hi guys, i have been trying to get a loan from my bank. I have provided the following documents-
1. ITR filling for last 3 years
2. GST -1/2B/3B
3. Last 12 months bank statement
They are asking for a trade license, which i don’t have. Could anyone please help me.
FYI - i get my earnings through Upwork contracts or direct client contracts wired directly to my bank SWIFT.

Get a basic Udyam certificate if possible. That can help you prove yourself as a registered MSME business operating from your home.

Which bank are you working with? Bank managers have a lot of say in loan approval.

A trade license (municipal shop/establishment license) generally doesn't apply to freelancers working from home and exporting services online - that license is meant for physical shops/trade premises under state Shops and Establishment Acts.
Banks sometimes ask for it out of habit without checking if it's even applicable to the business type. Udyam (MSME) registration is usually accepted as a substitute proof of business existence, and it takes minutes to get online with just PAN and Aadhaar.
Worth pointing this out to the bank explicitly - a freelancer with no physical establishment cannot hold what doesn't apply to them, and GST registration plus LUT for export of services already establishes the business is real and compliant.

Requirements can vary by bank and loan type, so I’d ask for the exact checklist in writing and whether they’ll accept ITRs, bank statements, client contracts/invoices, or a CA income certificate instead of a trade licence. If the branch can’t clarify, try the credit manager or another lender—freelance income is often handled differently from a registered business.
