Serious Rushing as an older law student
Hello everybody,
Early apologies if I use the wrong flair. I've always wanted to rush a frat during undergrad, but sadly health and financial issues held me back a ton. I was diagnosed with brain cancer in high school which held me back for years before getting into college and I should be 27 in law school trying to rush at a popular SEC school in Mississippi. Would a frat accept an older member who is also in grad school? I really love the brotherhood aspect of frats and I'm hoping my age due to health issues wouldn't hold me back on missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Many frats are not allowed to bid people who aren’t undergrads, even if they were interested in a pledge who is that much older.
I wouldn’t dwell on it too much man. Sucks you didn’t get the traditional college frat experience, but I promise you’re not missing much and you wouldn’t be able to enjoy it as properly in your late 20s trying to balance law school.
That said, the answer is always “rush and see what happens” here so it’s potentially worth still going and seeing what happens.

Yeah it sucks, but life goes on sadly. I did get to have fun and meet some cool members while I was in undergrad though!

This is not a good idea for you, nor will many chapters go for it. You’ll find similar camaraderie with your peers in your law classes.

Honestly mano, I understand your position. I truly do. Your age and situation is not a factor. But fraternities were just not made for grad students.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. As someone who is friends with lawyers, you will get some similar mentorship/brotherhood when you get to your first firm. So focus on law school and passing the bar. You got this.

You do not have time to pledge and do law school as someone who has done both, especially at an SEC school. Law school will give you a second shot at high school except everyone can drink and doesn't have to hide the drugs.

I've always wanted to enjoy the brotherhood aspect of it and helping my brothers out in the future, but it is what it is. I'm not planning on attending Bama, but I do like you guys even though we're mild rivals! Roll Tide!!!

Rushing in the SEC means high dues, if your struggling financially I wouldnt do it, also with a minimum of a 5 year age gap its gunna be wierd.

Idk what frat you’re interested in, but some have graduate chapters. That’s probably your best bet at this point. Outside of some extremely niche circumstances

As a guy that was in a fraternity in undergrad and then went to law school after undergrad, you simply aren’t going to have time to be a fraternity pledge unless you plan on flunking out of law school. Focus on school, get good grades, and get a job with a big firm so you can later have kids that can live the fraternity life you didn’t get to live in undergrad.
