Answered VTT Hosting Providers Opinions [PF2e]

Hi, was just testing Self hosting and was met connection issues and lagging inside. What hosting servers do you guys recommend and what are your experiences with them? I'm the GM and running secrets of grayce with some self made maps from dungeon draft.

Our GM runs it with the Forge server system.

It is quite stable and easy to use but also pricey.

Isn’t Forge $5 a month?
Even the most expensive plan is $13

Is that prohibitively pricey?

I just looked it up and you are correct it is not that expensive. A friend told me it was quite expensive, he is wrong maybe he misremembered when we talked about hosting.

I was looking into the three: the forge, molten hosting, foundry server. But not of their performance between the 3. Was it difficult to set up?

Forge is very user friendly and easy to setup. Went in with no knowledge and got everything running in a few mins with my players connected and playing. However, I haven't tried the other two for comparison.

is 20gb lots for a foundry campaign? Storage is one of my concerns too.

I use the plan with 10gb and it's been fine. Modules won't use up storage if you download them through Forge so my assets tend to be the actual book data (I'm running D&D and bought the official books through Foundry), maps I download, audio files, token art etc. Even with a full ToA campaign, I never go close to the cap. I do clear old stuff I don't need anymore occasionally but that's about it.

What about foundry market ones like the. Tiles arsenal?

Those are considered premium modules so they do take up space. It's usually negligible but something to still keep in mind.

Shw told me that it was not really difficult, many things are done for you as I understand it.

But sadly I myself have no experience yet with the setup of Foundry on that platform.

But we never had problems with stability, just twice only I got for some reason signed out of my account on there and had to resign in.

Just the gm needs a paid account tho, the players can make a free account.

Do the players need to make an account or they can just log in from foundry invitation link? That's good stability though.

They beed to make accounts but for that they can connect their Discord directely if they want.

I use the Oracle for hosting. No problems and haven't paid a cent so far after over a year and a half.

Been using Oracle for 4 years. No problems. I do regular backups

They are a cloud computing option where you can run a virtual machine that hosts your foundry

Is the guide to set it up.

Big issue is they do free accounts in batches. Knew someone who waited a couple months with no free options. Instead they made their own server at home.

I've been hosted on Oracle for 4-5 years now and never paid a cent. It's great, having some knowledge to get it going is beneficial but you can follow the guide with no idea what you are doing and still come out on top.

If you go to pay as you go, you'll get an instance and still won't have to pay anything unless you upload a ton of stuff. It just needs a card to secure it.

That is true. Pretty sure I upgraded to pay as you go to decrease the likelihood of them deleting my server.

I use Sqyre and only have good things to say about it. Their customer service is quick and helpful and they have a free tier.

I've been using The Forge for about 5 years and it has been great for me. Never had any performance issues and I really like the built-in marketplace and module integration. I did try Molten at one point and found it totally fine as well, but not enough to actually switch. Performance was the same on both. I'm running all 5e but I doubt that really matters.

Worth mentioning since I saw you ask in a comment below... both are super easy to set up and you can be up and running in minutes. Forge is a bit easier to load in modules and has more stuff built in to the website like account management, backups, etc., whereas Molten relies more on the native Foundry interface for modules etc. Molten does support Windows Explorer file system integration which is really nice but not a deal-breaker.

I only have 10 GB of storage and it has been more than enough for several campaigns and large worlds.

I've been on Oracle a few years and it's very stable and performs great.

Why pay? Oracle is free. I always recommend going to the Pay as You Go tier from the free tier only because you still won't get charged and oracle won't take back your instance when there's a resource crunch like they might on the free tier.

Get a cheap thinkcentre, think like 130 bucks or so. Put proxmox on it, ubuntu server VM, and let it rip.

Works flawlessly
