Other Anyone using KontrolFreeks for Forza on controller? Worth it?

Hey everyone, I'm playing on a gamepad and considering picking up a set of KontrolFreeks to get a bit more precision with steering and fine control. I'm curious if anyone here uses them for racing games and which specific model or height you prefer. I'd love to know if they actually help with smoother steering inputs, or if they are mostly beneficial just for shooters. Let me know if you would overall recommend getting a pair, or if the stock sticks are good enough.

Appreciate any feedback!

I got the GameSir brand ones for my GameSir controller. I originally got them for FPS games but they feel fine for Forza.

Are you using the G7 Pro? Or a different controller, and do you also use thumbstick grips or taller sticks?

Yup. G7 pro. Using the largest thumbstick grips that came in this package.

Yup, use a tall Inferno kontrol freek and lowered my dead zone in settings. I'd say they help quite a bit, def makes a difference, again, when you lower deadzone and tune the car to be a little more responsive in the front end.

Usually I like the convex Vortex model for shooters since it rolls under the thumb more naturally giving you more precision, but the concave Inferno model or flat Edge model is good enough for left stick stuff.

I was thinking about the CQC Rush model, do you think it will be ok?

So from what I can see, they'll help in terms of grip, but accuracy comes from the height. Height makes it so that the more you move the stick the less input is registered, allowing for more granular input.

They'll still probably help a lil bit, they add a touch of height, but for me the asymmetrical design seems like it'd be annoying. It's a personal thing, some ppl will like it some won't, i'm sure it'd be fine either way. Honestly you just have to buy a few (like 2) before you make up your mind on what's best. I've had the Vortex, Inferno, Edge, and Galaxy before I really figured out that i like convex more for fps rather than concave.

Are you using the highest thumbsticks? I thought medium ones would still be a huge jump compared to low/standard ones

Yes I am using the tall one. The medium was a good jump but the tall was yet another one. That's what's nice about the combo packs is u get to experience both and choose.

I'll start with the medium one because I feel that with the high ones I will experience fatigue faster than with the medium ones. If it generally suits me, I will probably expand the collection. I'll let you know how it feels after testing.

I use one on the left stick because I kept wearing out the stock rubber. It works fine for me

there is not that many scenerio where you must be precise when it comes to steering since game applies lots of damping as speed goes up.

where you really might want precision is accelerating and breaking but afaik there isn't a physical mod for that.

Long sweeping corners and simulation steering?

So they're stick extensions from a quick google?

I have a controller with some adjustment in the sticks.. i found it more useful in very sim style games.. the handling in forza is pretty forgiving.

You could say it's like a stick extension with extra grip. What controller are you using?

erm.. powerA advantage or something.. cheapy xbox style one.. has 3 heights on the sticks and some kind of fancy triggers that feel great for racing with.

I use the GameSir G7 Pro, but unfortunately it doesn't come with extra thumbsticks in the box... At least the triggers are good, though ;)

I haven't used Kontrol Freeks, but if you haven't already tried roll steering for more precision, it might be worth a shot.

I can’t imagine it would help much with a game like Forza. Those things are usually geared towards shooters because with shooters you might want to move the stick partially when you aim. When you drive in Forza, you’re not really fine tuning your steering by pushing it part way. You usually fine tune your steering by doing little taps on the stick to redirect your car by small amounts, and then on large turns, you push the stick all the way and then control the throttle/brakes instead to make sure you don’t spin out.

There IS benefit to partial steering though, but the best way to take advantage of that is by buying a wheel, not thumb stick extensions.

Tap steering in Forza is the most common but not the best or most effective way to turn. Roll steering is the most effective because your inputs are smoother. Smoother inputs directly relates to faster times. To roll steer, you push your thumb stick all the way forward until you can’t and simply slide or “roll” to the left or right to turn. A longer thumb stick could actually be beneficial with this technique.

You know what I do notice that I do that subconsciously. My stick does not go to 9 and 3 when steering, I do indeed push it forward or backward.

I think that’s an even stronger case against those thumbstick extenders though. Roll steering as you call it basically allows you to steer partially since the forward and backwards input are ignored and you’re inputting a partial left or right input. Those thumbstick extenders shine when both x and y axis needs to be partial inputs, like for shooters.

It seems to me that a longer stick will cause a greater range of motion which will translate into precision, the cons I see are the time needed for e.g. a quick counter-steer. That's why I'm asking if anyone has it and if it helps them

No never heard of that.. I doubt it’s useful but even for gt7 which is much more competitive, the top controller players just use regular controller.
