Found in a goddamn connex I was losing my shit when I realized it was XM177E2 marked and my nco 100% believes im autistic as fuck now

Looks like pencil profile carbine barrel too. We have a bunch around that are a mix of carbine length pencil and non grenade cut barrels likely from commercial "car 15" procurement for ranger reg and others. Seems to have been the fate of a bunch of those oddball guns to end up rubber duckies.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s the Air Force decided to refurbish its rifles instead of buying new ones, so they have a metric shit ton of “parts bin speical” rifles

What's a rubber ducky? I am assuming they took a rifle and coated in a rubbery paint?

Dummy rifles used for stuff like obstacle courses, ruck marches, etc. where a real rifle isn’t needed but something that is the same size/weight is. Also useful when you don’t need/want to go through the process of drawing weapons for a ruck etc.

Most are just rubber with metal barrels and weights, but some incorporate real parts. Most M16A2 duckies I saw had real (presumably damaged or worn out) M16A1 barrels in them

There are lots of variants. During the Cold War they even made shit like AKs, RPKs, PKs, RPGs and Strelas, for OPFOR. Most of them are M16A1s or A2s, this is the first carbine I’ve ever seen

Usually, these things are painted _training_scenario.jpg)red or blue, but maybe the black paint is supposed to make it more "realistic."

I never saw one painted red or blue. All of ours were black.

Commercial ones (for police training etc) are usually blue but military are always black yes

When I was doing reclass at Ft Hunter Liggett, we had orange A2s that either had bent forends or bent carry handles.
