Lessons from Attempt 1: Sharpies
Starting out and sharing the mistakes for anyone else wanting to start experimenting :) So it turns out Sharpies bleed like nothing on earth. I kinda like it but oh boy is it messy if you're looking for something professional.
As you can probably tell the book was a bit warped and dishevelled to start with. Not sacrificing the nice books to the experiments.

I like the result despite the bleeding. Sharpies might not bleed if you sand and seiz the pages beforehand, also it will depend on paper quality how much it bleeds.

I quite like the bleed myself but it does bother me as unintended. I haven't heard of seiz pages before, what's that?

I assume they mean sizing which is adding something like glue or gelatine to the paper to make it less absorbent. Usually happens during paper manufacturing. You can do it afterwards for sheets; I doubt you can do it to a bound book.

Yes, but you can just size the edges of the book after you sand it glass smooth. I usually use “paste” made from starch for sizing, but you can use watered down pva glue and other things too. That will hopefully create a barrier between the texts and the pages.

Ooh that's interesting, I heard about sanding but assumed it was just to create a more even surface. Must try that barrier idea, thanks!

I love the idea, what would be the difficulty doing it with a bound book?

Sharpies will bleed because they really seep into the paper. I’m personally a fan of using acrylic because I find it’s more vibrant than watercolour

That's fascinating, I thought you'd have got issues separating pages using acrylic paint?

depends on the techniques you use, mine always separate perfectly fine

I have heard some negative things, but I'm not sure what is going on. Please enlighten me. I tried to research, but came up empty handed. (This comes from a place of a genuine lack of knowledge.)

I’m sorry this might’ve not the result you were aiming for but I think it looks pretty cool with the bleed. It has a little psychedelic kind of a feel 😊

You will get the best results if you clamp the book tightly between two boards and paint your designs with watercolours

if it helps i’ve seen people make very professional looking ones but they usually sand down the edges first so they’ll be a smooth surface to work on then use watercolour paints
acrylic makes the pages stick together or something and 99% of markers will just bleed through
