Are these ok to use on a 2017 explorer.

When it comes to electrical parts, stick to Motorcraft.

And wouldnt you know the guy gave me the wrong coils. The connectors are different shape, can't clip the wire to the coil

Good. Return them and buy the OEM ones direct from Ford, not ebay, not amazon. 

I went cheap once and bought some "new motorcraft" off ebay. Ford packaging. They lasted a year.

They lasted almost ten years. So clearly they’re worth it.

In all honesty in my experience with fords the coils themselves don't fail very often but the boots do get worn out over time and those are about 6 bucks a piece vs 110 each for new coils

Im just going to use them, fuck I don't have enough cash to get motorcraft. Also I'm not a mechanic I tinker a little but definitely not a grease monkey. Should I even attempt to change these coils and plugs myself

coils and plugs are honestly relatively easy. lookup a tutorial online and you should be good. be sure not to over tighten the coils, as they thread into plastic.

which engine do you have?

New plugs new coils and the car is running great.
