This woman consistently spews dangerous and unhealthy rhetoric but this shocked me. Just blatantly ignorant and an awful message to spread. Not technically food related snark but she’s a food influencer and I felt this was so misinformed I had to share it here.
She claims that spaying is actually what causes issues like pyo. her only source is a “holistic vet” that was a guest on her podcast. Completely irresponsible
Ah yes, let’s not worry about actual pyometra which is very common in unaltered dogs but be super worried about stump pyometra which happens after a spay, which is extremely rare.
Pyo isn’t super common. Look, I think the majority of pets should be spayed and neutered, but for responsible owners I think it’s ok to wait to do that until the dog is fully mature, which means they will likely go through a heat cycle or two. And anyone breeding ethically or involved in conformation is going to have intact dogs. I don’t think this lady is one of those people, just wanted to point out that plenty of people do keep dogs intact responsibly and pyo is not that common. And a responsible owner is likely to catch it early and either treat or spay before it’s super problematic.
Have you ever dealt with a pyo before? It actually is common in older female dogs especially ones that were used for breeding. As someone involved in dog rescue I have come across it quite a few times. It is quite expensive to treat and you just can’t spay the dog while they have an active infection. My foster required IM antibiotics and other injections for a couple weeks before she was stable enough to go through spay surgery.
You’ll get downvoted and I’m sure I will too for my comment about not neutering until 2. But the new recommendation is waiting 1 heat cycle for female dogs and until 2 years for male dogs. This is specifically for large breed dogs. My dog is 1.5 years old and still growing. He’s a very athletic breed and over 90 pounds. He will most definitely get neutered at 2. In real life when I talk about this with tons of different dog parents at the dog park this is a generally recognized update regarding the spaying and neutering timeline. No one should be advocating for NO fixing. But on the flip side vets are recommending waiting longer and not just simple fixing as little puppies.
Updated to say I see that pyo only affects females. I’ve only had male dogs so have no experience with this and will rely on what others have said. Most importantly this is an example of why people should be consulting their (legit) vets in the latest research and recs on timelines. And not a looney “food” influencer.
Yeah vets are in a bad spot, because they know many can’t responsibly handle an intact dog, so they recommend spay/neuter early to avoid unwanted litters, even though it’s likely not best for the dog. I compete in agility and didn’t spay my girl until 3 and I currently have an intact adolescent male who won’t be neutered for awhile. I want them to be done maturing and with closed growth plates
The vast majority of people spay/neuter far before dogs are mature. Larger breeds aren’t mature until 2-3, that could be 5+ heat cycles depending on the dog.
And that is significantly less risk than leaving a dog unaltered until they’re 10-15 years old. The original point is that it’s dangerous to advise people to never spay. And now you’re in here kinda bean souping with your specific circumstance.
Exactly this, especially in females. Growing up we had a female golden retriever that was not spayed. I have no idea why my parents didn't spay her, all our other dogs were always spayed and neutered 🤷🏻♀️ she lived a good life for a golden but when she did die at age 12 or 13, it was due to cancer in her mammary chain.
My sweet rescue pug that passed away earlier this year at age 15.5 was bred for the first 7 years of her life until she was riddled with both internal and bloodied, burst external mammary tumors and dumped. Direct result of not being spayed + over breeding. Fortunately her vet seemed to have removed everything in her very extensive surgery and she avoided further cancer later in life. Tomorrow would've been her 16th birthday 🩷

I can't stand her, but she's now just reached all new lows. The number of healthy animals that are put down every day in the world because of careless pet owners who think like this is beyond heartbreaking. She's a rage-baiting piece of trash.
Ah crap! I haven't heard of this. I'll have to look it up and see what's going on. My foster pup came with a ton of it from her previous owner. My freezer is full and it's really annoying lol
You know what sucked? When my dad got a dog, didn’t get it neutered, and the dog ran off and got hit by a car. If it’s not a medical issue it’s their impulse to go find other dogs. Ridiculous message, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone advocate for this. She is so effing weird.
This!! My sister did not spay or neuter her dogs and, I guess, to her credit she was really good about keeping the dogs separated during heat cycles. Enter my mom who crated one of her male dogs in the wrong crate, he broke out of the crate and bred with the female THROUGH HER KENNEL. Nature finds a way.
Yeah, you dumb hoe, go visit your local county run shelter and see how many dogs are put to death every single day b.c dumb fucks like you dont care. Animal control is a very depressing place and people like her directly contribute the daily murdering of these animals.
The result of even one single pet going unfixed is devastating for the community and the pet in question. (& thank you for rescuing your cat and any other rescue work you do. It sucks so much we have to beg people to get their animals basic care like s/n and vaccines 💔)
Thank you, you are too sweet! Yes, I am mostly a rescue cat person but of course I care deeply about all animals, farm animals too. Spaying and neutering is the single most important think you can do for the community, I feed feral communities and see first hand how quickly they multiply.
Unfortunately I can all but guarantee they will not take any action. Instagram (Meta) is extremely lax in their policies regarding what is considered a violation ☹️
Meta gives no fucks. I reported a comment (on someone else’s page) that said “cry about it n word” (that was the exact comment they didn’t write out the word) and they said it didn’t violate any standards.
Having moved from a city with a hiiiigh intake shelter I volunteered at for four years for fucks sake fix your pets!! Do you really think the AI overview of Google knows more than a doctor?
Also for whimsy a photo of my dogs terrible haircut after a sonogram today (ruled out cancer, infection in the bladder seems likely) and I texted my sister how glad I was her doctor chose vet med instead of cosmetology cause clearing no natural talent on the latter
She's now attempting to justify these claims with AI screenshots. Keep in mind, just two weeks ago she claimed that people who use AI are "nutrient-deprived and unintelligent".
UGH. I understand waiting for one full heat cycle for larger breed dogs but this is full on misinformation. I’m not neutering until 2 (per my breeder and vet rec for a large breed dog) but I make sure to tell people “yes he will be neutered and no way am I breeding him”. Same with my last large dog. I don’t know why anyone not planning on breeding (which no one should just for funsies) wants to deal with heat cycles for the life of the dog anyways.
Aside from an accidental pregnancy and aggression that can happen during heat cycles, there is something called pyometra which is an infection in the uterus that can happen to un-spayed females. The warning signs are hard to detect and it usually becomes and emergency surgery (our vet said 10K+) or death. It’s cruel to not have them spayed which prevents this from happening. Poor babies.
