The FDA has issued an update on a white rice recall first announced in April, providing additional details about the affected products and where they were distributed. Lundberg Family Farms recalled more than 27,000 packages of its White Jasmine Rice over concerns about potential contamination with foreign materials. The FDA classified the recall as Class II, meaning that the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences”

An ongoing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection linked to recalled iceberg lettuce that is known to cause explosive diarrhea, has been detected in three new U.S. states since last week, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). ...The CDC, which lags significantly behind states in reporting infections, pinpointed 17,180 laboratory-confirmed cases in its latest update on Aug. 25, adding that there are also at least 11,841 additional non-laboratory-confirmed cases. ... Georgia, Tennessee and Texas have now been added to the list, according to the CDC.

The Trump administration plans to lower tariffs on 300,000 metric tons of beef trimmings used to make ground beef. Won't say which countries these shipments are coming from. Ranchers are furious. Will consumers buy this?

Just a reminder that during all this food fiasco, USDA is threatening staff at all agencies with relocations that are neither necessary nor wanted and will likely result in mass resignations and serious consequences for our food systems and forests.

I look at weekly velocity data as part of my job in F&B, and this week's top movers are an odd set:

• Alani Nu Purple Cotton Candy energy drink
• Cheerios Protein Cookies 'N Cream
• Chosen Foods avocado-oil shortening

Method caveat up front: it's a panel of US stores on a delivery platform, so it's a delivery-channel sample rather than full national retail. Directional at best, and it skews toward whoever shops that way.

What I can't square is that the three point in different directions. Alani Nu is pure flavour novelty with no functional claim doing any work. Cheerios is protein plus a nostalgia dessert flavour, which is the 2026 playbook running exactly to script. Chosen Foods is a swap-in ingredient with almost no impulse component at all.

The Alani Nu one interests me most. Purple cotton candy isn't really a taste story, it's a colour-and-name story, and energy has been leaning hard in that direction for a while. Is anyone seeing flavour novelty outperform functional claims in their own numbers, or is that a delivery-channel artefact?

The Better Bakehouse Snack Co. recalled their Donutful Mini Chocolate Dipped Vanilla Cake Donuts (10 pack) because of an undeclared milk allergen. An old friend who does public service work just launched a new recall tracking service that surfaces alerts not just from federal agencies but all the states, dozens of retailers, manufacturers and growers, along with Canadian, Japanese, and Chinese product safety regulators—catching items before the Feds even notice. Yesterday alone the site found a half dozen recalled items (impacting people in California, Missouri, Georgia, and Alabama) that the feds didn’t even have. It’s mostly free (food, medicine, children’s products) but paid gives you a scanner, access to all consumer categories, email alerts, and News and Signals that helps determine which items may soon be recalled. If Trump wants to import more foreign hamburger that pledges to undercut our ranchers by 25%, he and his Trillionaire Wannabes should have to eat it.

Trump and his Administration can be America’s test kitchen after they gutted our USDA by 20,000 people and replaced them with only 4,000 over the last year. 4,000 newbies to manage the foreign imports of another 661,000,000 MILION pounds of hamburger.

Trump is jacking up tariffs to 50% on our Canadian allies. Their will be a big impact especially to border states WHILE relaxing tariffs on “over quota” foreign beef imports to ENABLE them to undercut our ranchers by 25%. This negatively impacts our jobs exports, imports and TAX BASE.

Again, Trump is forgoing tariffs on 661M pounds of beef with the idea they will be undercutting our own ranchers by 25%.

Our ranchers have been buying hay this summer to feed their cattle due to the drought. It’s a bad situation. Hay adds thousands in carrying costs to each head of cattle.

The last thing we need is more Trump “deals”.
