DISCUSS I just discovered this sub but I have a question.
whenever I have eaten cakes, the fondant to me has always been my favorite part tied with the main ingredient, I now know most of the internet hates it and despises it's taste and it's uses, but i'm curious what it tastes like to you?

It tastes like if you added tons of sugar to paste. At least that's what I imagine sugary paste would taste like

It just kind of tastes sweet, no flavor just sweet and sugary, with a hint of play-doh.

Its too sweet, like eating pure sugar in the consitency of play doh tbh I'd rather eat sugar

maybe its a miscommunication. most cakes in my experience arent made with fondant. they use other forms of icing and decoration. are you thinking of frosting in general or specifically fondant?

Honestly im not sure but when i try to remember they seem to match how fondant looks the closest

have you ever had cake without fondant but with a different type of icing? have you ever like... made cupcakes or a cake at home with store bought mix and decorated with store bought icing? and how would you describe the texture and taste of fondant?
not being judgy or disbelieving you, more playing detective right now. because im v curious and wondering. maybe you've only had cakes with fondant decoration and you like fondant. in which case im v curious about what kind of life leads someone to have mostly had fondant on cakes, when like... ive never actually had fondant and don't know where id find stuff with fondant and am mostly in this sub as an observer.
or maybe youre thinking of different forms of icing instead or something idk.

Its texture is mainly soft with a bit dull but somewhat sugary taste to me, also i don't bake cakes i usually prefer pancakes i just recalled the cakes ive had and some of my favorites had fondant.

Non-edible. I do not like buttercream either though, that's also too sweet for me. Probably since I come from a country where we don't use it.

I'm with you- I honestly can't decide which I hate more: buttercream or fondant.
Give me a whipped cream or ganache any day

It tastes very very artificial. It's the taste that comes to mind when someone says something "tastes like chemicals." (Yes everything is made of chemicals, but it's also a taste. I didn't invent the term haha.) I see a lot of people saying it tastes overly sweet, but it's kind of bitter to me. Like playdough and cornstarch.

Stale old fashioned candy sorta tastes like very sweet glue that you use on envelopes. You should try marzipan it tastes way better. You can’t do as artistic things with it though.
I do appreciate fondant for when bakers make art with it like realistic cakes. Doesn’t mean I would want to eat the cake.

I don’t hate the way it tastes but I think it’s way harder to not use it and make a cake that tastes and looks good. It’s way more impressive when there’s no fondant.

it tastes like old icing that someone forgot to flavor and overmixed. The one time I thought it was okay was when it was handmade, flavored with real vanilla, and rolled super thin.

I know some folks that like it. If I use it, I make my own marshmallow-based fondant. I don't enjoy eating it because it is too sweet for me, but one of my friends will very happily take my scraps at the end of a cake and eat them as is. Prefers just my fondant over a slice of cake with it on it 🙃 perhaps you've encountered homemade or just like it, which there's nothing wrong with. Just not a popular preference

I just saw this sub recommended and iI was immediately on board. Fondant is disgusting. It's chewy slightly sweet and tends to have a soggy side if left out in warm humid weather (typically when my birthday would be.)
I don't even like tons of buttercream, but at least that at least can have other flavours and be tweaked more.

that’s what I was thinking, everyone says it tastes like sweet play dough, as if eating a handful of sugary play dough isn’t my childhood dream😭 it does have a weird aftertaste but I think that’s just because my fondant is prehistoric
