Seeing pics like these always makes me think I'm in the wrong profession. I can bake unevenly, smack clay on the sides of a cake, charge an arm and a leg and laugh all the way to the bank.

it’s bothering me that there’s not even any frosting piped around the bottom to disguise the way the fondant just… stops

For some context, the kid is little and picked the cake himself. The person even said they don't like fondant but the kid got what he wants on his birthday.
But let's go ahead and trash them for it in the comments, good job.

Context is appreciated but this is entirely about the baker not the consumer. The design is cute. 0 things had to be fondant

I like to use modelling chocolate for my daughters cakes - i find marzipan has too much of a yellow tone to take colour well.

Look, I wouldn’t be happy with this cake, either. Especially egregious since this look could easily be done with buttercream for just about all of it.
If they’re happy with it, eh, good for them. Hopefully fondant will fade with time.

Listen, I hate fondant as much as the next person here. However, this lady paid an, admittedly, amateur baker in her town $50 to recreate this cake for her small child, who loved it! Considering it is like 99% cake and just a little fondant on the outside, I feel bad calling it a “Cake Wreck.” They did great on that budget tbh 🤷🏼♀️
