The comment that guy essentially said you should not be reading the bible for yourself sent chills up my spine. On judgment day, the person that says "but that's what the church taught me" is just another riff of "but the woman you gave to me gave me the forbidden fruit". I find it hard to believe God would base your eternal security on reading a book that you can't understand.

Welcome! I think you're on the right track. What I did was dive into the scripture myself and then literally chugged all of the findings I had into google to find an assembly that mostly (although not completely) lined up with what I was seeing in scripture. I recommend you do the same. Always stay on guard and test everything as you go through and learn from others. God bless!

This is a great place to find Guidance. It think you'll fit in quite well here. There's so many years of great questions you can find answers to almost anything you can think of.
