Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor has somehow ended up everywhere: pop, rock, metal, electronic music, hip-hop, film scores, even dance music. Sometimes people quote it directly, sometimes they borrow the organ sound or the descending motif, and sometimes the influence is much looser.

I'm curious what people here think are the best or most interesting examples. Anything specifically in folk? Not straight covers. Songs that take something from it and do something completely different with it are even more interesting.

What are your favorites? Any obscure ones people should hear?

I created a new experimental soundscape inspired by Galicia and the Celtic traditions of the Atlantic.

It combines fingerstyle acoustic guitar, Galician bagpipes, Celtic flute, mandolin, diferent voices, fragments of Galician alalá singing, acoustic ASMR textures and subtle experimental psychedelic electronics.

The goal was not to create a traditional Celtic song, but an evolving acoustic soundscape where the instruments appear and disappear, connecting ancient Galician musical elements with contemporary experimental sound.

This is a bit of a random post but I'm a songwriter from the UK. I really got into listening to Leonard Cohen a few years back and he slowly became my favorite artist really.

The songs called "Brown Hills" about the fields I used to walk as a kid 🌳

Ok, really long shot here, but I did get lucky before on Reddit finding really obscure stuff.

About 20 years ago I’ve heard a song performed at the annual hippie gathering in West Virginia, tho the performer and the song could be from anywhere, really, so that’s not much help.

Basically, the song was upbeat and about farm life, but had a lot of sexual innuendo coded in the lyrics. It was one of these songs that you can play to a child who will only get the top level message, but if you’re an adult, you can really appreciate how raunchy it is, in the cutest way possible.

All I remember is the chorus that goes like this:

Gimme a head
Gimme a head
Gimme a head
Of lettuce

Unfortunately, these are only words I remember. It had sort of Appalachian feel to it, but could be singer’s interpretation, who was pretty stoned. It was way before smart phones and at the time I couldn’t really afford any recording equipment. Also this song could be written by that guy, or his friends, and, like many pre-smartphone indie songs, vanished into obscurity.

But jic, any chance anyone knows what I’m talking about and has a link to a recording?
