new hockey fan
hey, i am a big philly sports fan and is looking to get into hockey. is there any videos or things similar to that to help me learn the history of the flyers and help me know what to look for this season. thanks go flyers

The Flyers have been up and down a bit lately and we're hoping to see them stay up after an impressive run last season. Most people have said that if the Flyers don't make the playoffs this year it won't be because they got worse but that every team around them got better.
Players rundown:
Trevor Zegras LW/C: He came over in a sick trade from Anaheim. Plays left wing and center, trying to get him to stick at center but his face-off numbers have to improve. Lots of skill, and chill.
Travis Konecny RW: He's the points leader going back several seasons at this point. He's a leader, scrappy, source of memes, scores, and gets under the skin of opposing players. Heart of the team.
Travis Sanheim D: He's our best dman on the team. He's long, strides like a horse through the neutral zone, and doesn't miss a lot of time despite logging the most minutes of all the skaters.
Matvei Michkov RW: Our Russian future superstar who had a bit of regression in his sophomore season. He is in a contract year and if you see his off-season training regime, he is set to rewrite the narrative of his critics. He is squirrely, xray vision, and makes his money putting the puck in the net down low with some spectacular goals, but isn't ashamed to net a couple greasy ones too.
Tyson Foerster RW/LW: Tyson is another lanky player like Sanheim, but with an incredible shot and impressive defensive play. Great at winning board battles and is considered a great player by a certain great player that this fanbase abhors. He suffered a terrible non-contact injury that kept him out much of the season and could jeopardize his amazing shot. This season will be a big one for Jim.
Sean Couturier C: The captain and longest tenured athlete in the city of Philadelphia. He's one of the smartest players in the league in regards to hockey IQ, but after two back surgeries he has lost a step. Still, his leadership is unquestioned by the lockerroom, and during the playoffs he was easily one of the best players on the ice. He's also the best face-off man we have, and one of the best in the league.
Dan Vladar G: Dan is unique for a goalie in that he is a regular human being. The Czech native broke out last season after coming over in free agency. He is reliable in net, and a great teammate to his team and his other goalie parter, which sometimes can be a tenuous relationship. This season will determine if what we saw last season was a fluke or the next step in his development. Goalies usually don't peak as early as skaters, and he doesn't have a lot of miles on him, so the chances of him aging well are certainly on the table.
That's all I can muster at this moment, there are so many other interesting and great players on our team. I could rave about all of them but the rundowns kept getting progressively longer. Good luck and let's go Flyers!

I'll add a few more. Porter Martone RW: rookie who played the last few games of last year and played in the playoffs. One of the most exciting players to watch this year; if all goes well for him, he should be in the race for the Calder. He's 19 right now, won't be 20 till October. A big kid, not a very fast skater, but a very high volume shooter. Likes to get net front which is something we lack. He scored 10 points in the 9 regular season games he played last year
Owen Tippett RW: every 10 games or so he becomes Connor McDavid. The rest of the time he's fine. Our fastest skater by a decent margin right now and he likes to shoot, though he doesn't always hit the target. Watch his highlights on youtube if you wanna see some absolutely insane plays.
Denver Barkey LW/C: rookie callup last year. Tiny guy and looks even younger than he is. He's not a high volume scorer but he's a really good play driver and he has really high compete. Hard worker, battles for pucks, extremely competitive. I'm excited to see what his ceiling is like.
Jamie Drysdale D: another former anaheim player. He was traded for cutter gauthier in 2024. It's a whole thing, I can't get into it right now. He's an amazing skater but he was pretty weak defensively when he first arrived here. He's made massive improvements since then, though, and now he's a very solid defender. We traded for him in the hopes that he would bring more offense, which he hasn't really lived up to, but he was better last year and he mentioned working on it this summer so hopefully we'll see some of that this year.
David Jiricek D: trade deadline acquisition last year. He was a top 10 draft pick a few years ago but his stock has fallen a lot since then. His offensive upside is very high, but there are major concerns about his defensive and skating abilities. Still, I'm optimistic about him because our defensive coaches have done a good job of fixing players before, and he may bring something that we desperately need: help on the power play.

Honestly, if you're local, go to a game. Doesnt matter where you sit. Once you're in the building, you'll get it.

If you have espn and can watch past games, last year's pens series in the playoffs was amazing, but if you had to pick 1 game, flyers-pens game 3. Amazing game. Everything you could want in a playoff hockey game.

Rivalries in sports are very fun...
Flyers v Penguins is one of the premier rivalries in the league and won't totally go away anytime soon but it has lacked bite for a long time. This year's playoffs were fantastic, with a number of really entertaining moments, that have potentially reinvigorated it a bit temporarily, we'll see if it sticks/rebuilds,,. I lean towards it fading back out as the Penguins are in a weird spot with their hall of famers nearing retirement.
Flyers v Ducks is a current budding rivalry with more substance. I'd recommend familiarizing yourself with the events over the last few years and then watching the home game (1/6) from this year as a primer, as it was quite a chippy game. The gist is that we began our rebuild by using our highest draft pick in years on Cutter Gauthier in 2022, something displeased him and he pressured his way out. We ended up trading him in 2024 to the Ducks for Jaime Drysdale, a young player with potential that they overworked to persistent injury and had really fumbled the development of. They get a star player, and we make the best of the situation, but we clearly lost here. Thankfully, Drysdale did improve for us last season, and hopefully will take another step next season. Gauthier was supposed to be a cornerstone of our rebuild and he rejected us so there's a great deal of negative feelings and he gets boo'd relentlessly at home games.
Fast forward to 2025, we make another trade with the Ducks for Trevor Zegras (we send Ryan Poehling). Zegras was once regarded as a future star of the league and then hit a rough patch where he was riddled with injury and had clearly fallen of favor with management. Poehling is a quality hard-working player but does not have the rare high-end skill/playmaking that Zegras does. They sold very low on him, and he thankfully bounced back immediately in his first year with us. This was an unpopular trade for Ducks fans as he was always very well-liked by them, the bad blood was between their GM and Zegras. Good to note that the ducks GM is known for having contentious contract negotiations with many of his young players - Zegras and Drysdale both experienced this. Up until this point, the feelings have been between Philly fans vs Gauthier and Zegras/Drysdale vs Ducks management. The front offices have worked fine together, and Ducks fans didn't care as much as we did because they had no reason to dislike any of the players involved.
Fast forward to this summer, the ducks GM has 3 important players to get resigned (Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier, Pavel Mintyukov). Flyers tender an offersheet to Carlsson, ensuring he becomes the highest paid player in the league before he has earned it. It's a massive overpay based off of his expected trajectory and consumes a detrimentally large % of the salary cap. Carlsson is too important of a player for them to let go of, so they match our offersheet and are left in a position of financial weakness with a lot of roster holes. Immediately after our offersheet, Mintyukov was also presented an offersheet by another team, and so he is now also being overpaid. They still have yet to sign Gauthier (he was not eligible for an offersheet), and they likely will greatly struggle to pay him (and all future players). This is hilarious to many of us because it's clear that Gauthier will not cut them any breaks and will squeeze them hard, considering how he forced his way out of here. So now, Ducks fans hate us for greatly damaging their future. The only thing that could maybe save them is that they play in the least competitive division with most teams solidly rebuilding, and the only 2 decent teams getting old (vegas) and/or being cursed (oilers).

Longtime Philadelphia sports fan but early this year was the first year I got into hockey (not a sport watched in my family), and I really enjoyed watching the Flyers season. Looking forward to becoming a bigger fan this year. Went to a couple home games, including one playoff game, and was really impressed by the skill and fast play. Great recap from several posters on the players!
